It says a lot about how Americans define race when Obama is almost universally called "our first black president." His mother was a white woman from Kansas. He calls himself "a mutt." Physical anthropologists would agree.
Similarly, Tiger Wood's mother is Thai and Tiger says he does not consider himself a "black man." Yet he is universally called a "black golfer." Interesting, huh?
True, Obama got more votes from blacks than previous Democratic candidates. He got 96%. Kerry got 88%. Gore got 90%. I'd say some of that is probably the "race effect."
