Tigers' Young Should Never Play Again

Update:  In the minutes since posting this piece, it was announced that Young would be suspended but we do not know for how long. We hope it is a long time!

We have been waiting for someone to take Delmon Young out to the woodshed for his anti-Sematic rantings. In the following posting, Phil Mushnick, suggests the slugger have to write a report on another famous Jew and Tiger, Hank Greenberg.  Will something like this happen, doubtful. We wish it would.

Why should he be able to get away with a slap on the wrist? If the roles were reversed and someone called him the "N" word, would that person get the same treatment? Doubtful!  Most probably that person would be charged with a hate crime and sent to jail for years especially if the "star" was touched.  Why this inequality of treatment?

One of the very interesting pieces of history that many African Americans do not realize is that, many Jews were very instrumental in the Civil Rights movement. Many of the riders on the freedom buses were Jewish. Several were murdered as part of the 1960's struggles and others were hurt in the conflicts between the marchers and the police. So where does Young come off saying "f---ing Jews?"  He must be ignorant, uninformed, an anti-Semite or all of the above.

His "apology" did not address what we feel are the totally unacceptable comments he made about Jews. He never said anything about being sorry for using the words he used, or that he would not have liked someone to use such negative stereotypes against him. In other words, he was sorry that he got caught but not for what he said.

The Tiger organization should get rid of this anti-Semite, angry malcontent. Regardless of his talents, we do not need this type of people in the game.

As many of you know, we are Detroiters and do support the Tigers. However, if this animal plays again for the Tigers, we will have to think long and hard about going to another game.

It’s too easy. Can of corn. You can call it in the air.

The moment word hit the Tigers’ Delmon Young had been arrested for a 2:40 a.m. Midtown hassle and assault, you knew an “apology” would follow, an apology “issued” by Young in “a statement.”

It’s the standard modern application for sports figures following suspensions, offensive comments and arrests. Their heartfelt contrition is suspect because they read the words and work of others, those in the public relations/damage control business.

The apologies ring worthless, as sincere as an exploding cigar, hollow as a sinkhole.

NOW AND HATER: If Delmon Young were truly contrite about his anti-Sematic assault early Friday morning, he should learn about and write an essay on Jewish Tigers legend Hank Greenberg, suggests The Post's Phil Mushnick.

Young: “I sincerely regret what happened last night, I apologize to everyone I affected, the Ilitch family [team owners], the Detroit Tigers organization, my teammates, my family and the great Tigers fans that have supported me since day one.

“I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a player and a person.”

. . . according to a statement issued to the media.

Intelligent folks would have preferred “No comment” or even, “It’s none of your bleepin’ business” to that load of ghost-written cheese. Yeah, Tigers fans, we’re in this together.

If Young’s that noble a dude, how’d he wind up accused of a drunken, anti-Semitic assault at 2:40 a.m.? How come his history as a pro includes two suspensions, including a 50-gamer in the minors for throwing a bat at an umpire and hitting him with it?

And as long as he “sincerely regrets what happened last night,” how about sincerely telling us what happened last night?

But in some quarters, it works. On Saturday, Ch. 4 News anchor David Ushery reported “Young apologized to his team and fans before his arraignment.”

Then, for added insult, Ushery reported, “Sources tell NBC New York that he was intoxicated at the time.”

That was an NBC-NY scoop? It was first reported by NYPost.com and had been reported all day by all the major New York media outlets!

Meanwhile, given that Young has been accused of both racially profiling and assaulting his victim — witnesses claim he was shouting, “F---ing Jews!” — MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton today will lead a demonstration of civil rights activists in front of NYPD HQ to protest Young’s release on a meager $5,000 bail.

Yeah, sure.

Perhaps a more appropriate action would be to have Young, a power hitter, to write a 500-word essay on the greatest slugger in Tigers history, Hank Greenberg, a “F---ing Jew.”

A spokesperson for Young could issue it to the media.
