Military Sex Assaults

Senators, Obama and the Defense Secretary  are all over the military sex assaults. The word they use is "scourge" and swear to "fix" the problem.  But can they?

We doubt that politicians can fix a societal problem or should we say, fix a human nature condition.  You see when men and women get together in confined space, they do what comes naturally.  And when men and women are in supervisor/underling relationships, there are those who will take advantage of each other.

When the discussions of having women in the military, we were opposed to the proposal for the very reasons we see now. Men and women will always be incompatible in the same units.  Human nature takes over when they are together.

Now that women have been integrated into all parts of the military, including front line units, we will see even worse abuses than before, regardless of the rules with which the armed services or Congress create.  Regulations will never stop "what comes naturally."

Yes, that makes us sound like a neanderthal and definitely politically incorrect, however, human nature is much stronger than any rule that the government could establish.  All the regulations in the world will never stop it, it is part of us.

The politicians once again are wrong and are playing to the crowd. However, it will not work, it will not change the way things are.  The only way to solve the issue is a strict segregation of the sexes and of course, that will not occur.

What we see occurring is a batch of regulations being created, several low rank personnel  brought up on charges and the pols declaring, "problem solved."  And of course, it will not be.

Senators: Sex assaults a 'scourge' on military

By Bernie Becker 05/26/13 10:09 AM ET
Two key senators said Sunday the military still had much more to do when it comes to battling sexual assault.
Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said the military needed to ensure that victims who came forward would be protected, and that armed services leaders needed to help change the culture.
“I want to salute the women who serve and are putting up with way too much crap. This needs to end,” Graham said on "Fox News Sunday."
Both President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said in recent speeches that stamping out sexual assault should be a top priority, after a Pentagon study found a sharp increase in assaults in 2012.
Durbin called the issue “truly a scourge on the military.”
“I think we understand the future of the military is a military with men and women in leadership,” the Illinois Democrat said.
Graham, who was highly critical on the show about the president’s national security policies, said Obama was on target on this issue.
“The president spoke well of this problem,” he said. “It is a disgrace.”

  1. Fact-checking…

"The Pentagon estimates that last year 13,900 of the 1.2 million men on active duty endured sexual assault while 12,100 of the 203,000 women in uniform experienced the same crime — or 38 men per day versus 33 women per day. Yet the Defense Department also acknowledges “male survivors report at much lower rates than female survivors.”

“As a culture, we’ve somewhat moved past the idea that a female wanted this trauma to occur, but we haven’t moved past that for male survivors,” said Brian Lewis, a rape survivor who served in the Navy. “In a lot of areas of the military, men are still viewed as having wanted it or of being homosexual. That’s not correct at all. It’s a crime of power and control."
