Angola Bans Islam From Country; Will Other Nations Join?

Will Angola start a trend among countries worldwide in banning Islam? The African nation has reportedly become the first country in the world to ban Islam and dismantle mosques in an effort to stop extremism from spreading. The Southwest African nation’s minister of culture, Rosa Cruz, said that “the process of legalization of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Their mosques would be closed until further notice.”
The website OnIslam.net said that Cruz made the comments during an appearance last week before the 6th Commission of the National Assembly. They also reported that Angola has become the first country in the world to ban Islam and Muslims. It’s unclear why the decision was made because Islam has functioned as part of the religious culture in Angola for years.
With the new law, Cruz said the law related to freedom of religious assembly will also be revolved. She also revealed that there at least 194 religious sects banned from conducting ceremonies or other activities that were deemed contrary to “habits and customs to Angolan culture.” All of the sects are also prohibited to conduct worship; if they wish to change this, they can join “a long list of more than a thousand legalization applications.”
The provincial governor of Luanda, Bento Bento, also told a local radio station last month that Muslims were not welcome in Angola and the government would not legalize mosques in the country. President Jose Eduardo was also quoted as sayingyesterday that “this is the final end of Islamic influence in our country.”
