As The Supreme Court Considers Warrantless Cell Phone Searches, The
Nation Debates Donald Sterling
[Editor's Note: The following post is by TDV Editor-in-Chief, Jeff Berwick]
THIS JUST IN! An old white guy does not really like hanging out with black Americans....and the United States is in an uproar! His girlfriend secretly recorded him and released the tapes. Just as the Supreme Court is about to vote on warrantless cellphone searches, too. Life really is stranger than fiction.
A private conversation between Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, and his girlfriend, was recorded, and now the entire nation is weighing in. I am not saying what this guy said was right, in any way, but the attention and reaction by the media has been just as disgusting and childish. Why gives this guy any attention whatsoever? Because the American psyche is sick and voyeuristic.
Who really cares what this guy said to his girlfriend? Not to mention she was recording a private conversation without his knowledge, which is creepy. Then she leaked it to TMZ. Surely, she had some ulterior motives. She probably figured the media might jump all over it and she would get her fifteen minutes of fame, and guess what? She got it. Everyone has chimed in!  If Sterling really is so racist, he wouldn't have any black people on his team...and his team would always lose...You see, freedom sorts itself out...
Americans really are so terribly naive. Basically mentally handicapped. It is laughable how easy it is to distract them...but, also, depressing.
It is political science 101 that the coverage of this story is a distraction. It is being used to distract YOU! Have you tweeted or Facebooked how this guy should have the book thrown at him!? Well, in that case, you fell for the psy-op! It is very silly that so many people have taken this story seriously or paid any attention to it at all. It only goes to show how mentally wasted most everyone in the US is.
When Larry Johnson, a black retired NBA player,  proposed a league where only blacks are allowed, few noted how incredibly racist that suggestion is! That is even more racist than Donald Sterling's remarks! At least he was talking about his own team, and not the entire league... But in the US, some sorts of racism are acceptable...If you're white, your racism is bad. If you're black, your racism is acceptable. Or so this situation would lead you to believe. Larry Johnson is a racist. Perhaps more racist than Donald Sterling! He certainly has a more oppressive vision than Donald Sterling...
It is humorous to watch the American media and so many people get all up in arms over the private comments, which were recorded with him not knowing, in the wake of the National Security Agency scandal. What the NSA does (spy ubiquitously) has been accepted by the American psyche. Privacy has met its end in the USSA. And now Americans can get aroused by spying on the rich.
Are there more important things for the American people to be concerned about?
Obviously.
The growing police state is taking innocent life after innocent life (including pets), gun shops are being closed via capital controls, the US has sent troops to eastern Europe as a possible World War III type scenario unfolds and so on and so forth. Still, people are so easily distracted by the bread-and-circus show put on by the mainstream media.
With everything that is going on in the world and the USSA it is totally insane that the only thing on CNN for the last month or so is a missing airplane (yet they still have never looked for any of the 4 missing planes from 9/11) and now an old white guy who doesn't like hanging out with black Americans is all over the networks...probably basking in the attention.
At the end of the day, nobody had to give this guy any attention! He even gave the solution to himself in his offensive comments: he said he didn't want blacks to attend his team's games. So, don't attend his games! See how long he stays in business. Ultimately, a private organization decided to ban him from attending their events, which is a much better solution than the statist solution of courts and jails...just ostracization. I am sure a lot of people called for him to be thrown in jail or worse on the internet.
NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar seems to have the right idea regarding the controversy over Sterling's comments. Abdul-Jabbar called the publication of the private conversation "sleazy" and noted that Sterling has been a racist jerk for a long time, and nobody seemed to make a big deal out of it until now.
Abdul-Jabbar wrote in a Time op-ed piece that we are bearing witness to a “finger-wagging Olympics . . . all over the latest in a long line of rich white celebrities to come out of the racist closet.”
“Yes, I’m angry, too,” Abdul-Jabbar wrote, “but not just about the sins of Donald Sterling. I’ve got a list.”
Abdul-Jabbar is also angry at Sterling's girlfriend, V. Stiviano, whose voice is heard in the racially-loaded tape, egging Sterling on.
“Man, what a winding road she led him down to get all of that out,” he wrote. “She was like a sexy nanny playing ‘pin the fried chicken on the Sambo.’ She blindfolded him and spun him around until he was just blathering all sorts of incoherent racist sound bites that had the news media peeing themselves with glee.”
Of the news media, Abdul-Jabbar writes, “They caught big game on a slow news day,” Abdul-Jabbar explained, “so they put his head on a pike, dubbed him Lord of the Flies, and danced around him whooping.”
Of course it really wasn't a slow news day, the media just needed something to cover up all the atrocities of the US government and enslavement of all peoples, black and white.
Abdul-Jabbar accurately points out that Sterling has said many offensive comments in the past and has even been sued over both housing and employment discrimination.
“We did nothing,” Abdul-Jabbar noted. “Suddenly he says he doesn’t want his girlfriend posing with Magic Johnson on Instagram and we bring out the torches and rope. Shouldn’t we have all called for his resignation back then?”
Abdul-Jabbar even brings the NSA scandal into view:
“Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way?” he asked, comparing the secret tape-recording to Mitt Romney’s embarrassing 47 percent remark, recorded without the then-candidate’s knowledge.
“The making and release of this tape is so sleazy that just listening to it makes me feel like an accomplice to the crime,” Abdul-Jabbar fumed. “We didn’t steal the cake but we’re all gorging ourselves on it.
“So, if we’re all going to be outraged,” the former NBA star concluded, “let’s be outraged that we weren’t more outraged when his racism was first evident. Let’s be outraged that private conversations between people in an intimate relationship are recorded and publicly played. Let’s be outraged that whoever did the betraying will probably get a book deal, a sitcom, trade recipes with Hoda and Kathie Lee, and soon appear on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and ‘Dancing with the Stars.’"
By the way, has nobody really questioned what a thirty-one year old woman was doing with an 87-year old billionaire? Look I believe as much as the next person that love is blind, but could it possibly be this woman is mentally unstable? (Here come the Berwick is a sexist allegations. Really, I am not!)
It is all too fitting that the Sterling scandal comes as the Supreme Court considers limits on warrantless wiretapping. One case they are hearing involves a San Diego man who was pulled over for expired tags, after which guns were found in his car and his cellphone was searched. Data found on the cell phone was used to convict the man of several crimes. Some might say this is justified, but I highly doubt we will ever see the day when a high-level Wall Street banker is pulled over, his phone searched, and racketeering or insider trading charges are brought against him.
My point being, the Sterling case is a distraction. This is very basic stuff to understand. That is what the media is for. And by the way, the mainstream media is also on the internet. You have to go out of your way, even on the internet, to find reliable sources. The more of our energy we spend on the sick people in our society, like Sterling AND his girlfriend, the sicker we also become. The time is now to let go of what Albert Einstein called "out there." Look inwards and ignore the noise.
