Virginia College Denies Student’s Application to Form Gun Club

Students at a small Virgina college have been denied the right to form a gun club on campus.
Patrick Winslow, a student at ECPI University, wished to create a gun rights club in order that he and his fellow students might be able to discuss “the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, federal and state laws regarding gun control and gun laws and so forth.”
Surprisingly, even though the club would focus on educating other deniedstudents on guns as well as the laws surrounding their use, the university shot them down saying the club’s goal to discuss guns “does not correlate to program enhancement or community service.”
Many residents of Virgina are raising an eyebrow and calling into question the refusal to let students form and run a gun club.
VCDL- Virginia Defense League president Philip Van Cleave said the reasoning behind the refusal doesn’t make sense. “It’s a group that would be meeting and talking about the Constitution, the Second Amendment and so forth, and they basically said that’s not a public service.”
He added that he thought a gun rights club would be in line with the school’s criminal justice degree programs.
The school’s president Mark Dreyfus said the gun club application was denied because Winslow had an ulterior motive. Dreyfus said, “I actually didn’t hear about it until we started getting bombarded with blogs and emails. [Winslow] wanted to start a club with the intent, expressed intent, with changing our policy on the carry law at the institution.”
As Freedom Outpost observed: “Concealed carry on college campuses is not regulated by Virginia law, so all schools have the power to set their own concealed carry policies allowing or prohibiting guns on campus.”
Winslow plans to rephrase his application and reapply for recognition of his gun club.
