Let the record show that Americans who capitulated to homosexual activists who claimed they were all about expanding freedom and equality were mugged by reality this month.

Two dramatic illustrations of how local officials have taken gender-bending non-discrimination laws to their logical coercive destination should be a wake-up call to anyone with common sense, common decency and a modicum of respect for the First Amendment.

• About two weeks ago, WND broke the story of how Houston Mayor Annise Parker, a radical lesbian activist, used organized clergy opposition to a city ordinance that allows “gender-confused people” to use any public restroom they choose to issue subpoenas for the sermons and other writings of five city pastors.
• Less than a week later, city officials in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, threatened to prosecute under an ordinance prohibiting discrimination on the basis sexual orientation a husband and wife team of evangelical pastors for refusing to conduct a same-sex wedding in their chapel.

The latter case is hardly groundbreaking. Dozens of bakers, florists, photographers, videographers and caterers have been prosecuted for refusing to participate in same-sex weddings because of their religious beliefs.

What we are witnessing is a growing pattern of the criminalization of conscience by activists determined not just to get their way but to ensure that those who disagree with their lifestyle choices are forced to participate in them.

Can anyone argue that this kind of “non-discrimination” zealotry is heinously discriminatory and shockingly tyrannical?

Long ago, Christian and pro-family activists warned that such “non-discrimination” laws would in fact threaten the liberties of those whose sincere religious convictions prohibit them from affirming behavior they consider sinful. Some, like me, even suggested that was the whole point of the same-sex marriage craze and the special-status privileges extended to people based on their sexual proclivities and “gender confusion.”

But many libertarians and establishment Republicans paved the way for the cultural revolution by standing down and refusing to defend the unborn, marriage as it has been defined by all cultures for 6,000 years and, more broadly, biblical sexual morality.

It should be crystal clear to any reasonable, fair-minded, freedom-oriented person that the laws and judicial rulings that led us here didn’t create new “rights” for all people but, rather, have set up large portions of the population for systematic persecution.

But, unfortunately, it’s not.

The Big Media, a haven for ideological zealots and progressive cultural warriors as eager to “fundamentally change America” as Barack Obama, have scarcely noticed these perversions of justice or reported on them as the outrages they represent. The Republican Party establishment has been quiet. Even the so-called “conservative movement” has been virtually silent or slow to recognize what’s happening.

How did we get to this sad state of affairs?

Allow me to explain:

• For decades, the largest “conservative” publishing empire in America was under the leadership of a homosexual activist.
• The largest libertarian think tank in America remains under the direction of a homosexual activist.
• The largest annual conservative conference in America was infiltrated by homosexual activist leadership.
• The Republican Party establishment in America has been infiltrated by homosexual activists and those eager to woo “gays” from the Democratic Party by blurring the distinctions between the two parties, particularly on sensitive moral issues like abortion and what has been euphemistically called “gay rights.”
• And, most of all, churches have forsaken their prophetic and biblical role in standing up for God’s standards of right and wrong.

Meanwhile, unaccountable activist judges have handed down rulings that have supplanted popular opinion as in the case of the homosexual federal jurist who overruled the votes of the majority of Californians, who affirmed marriage as the union between one man and one woman in Proposition 8. The media have vilified as “haters” those who mention morality in the face of the mainstreaming and even glorification of what was previously regarded as sin. Progressive legislators set the scene for the showdown by adding “hate crime laws” that judge not only people’s behavior but their motivations.

Now those who proclaimed they were fighting for “equality” and “rights” and “fairness” have bared their fangs. They are conducting a scorched-earth campaign against individuals who dare to live by their Christian conscience rather than cave into the worldly “new morality.”

It seems those “thorny social issues” were foundational to a free society after all.

Is it too late to restore innocence, the free exercise of religion, free speech and equal protection under the law to an America that has all but forsaken God’s sovereignty in favor of the ways of the world?

There’s only one way that will happen now – a sincere, unprecedented wave of repentance before the God we forgot.
