After Tuesday's GOP sweep, Rep. Darrell Issa says he sees a clear mandate for congressional Republicans to step in and make "sensible" change on behalf of voters, the Daily Caller reported.
"In a nutshell, and I'll sound a little bit like George Will, they didn't vote Republicans in tonight," said Issa, who called big GOP gains on Tuesday "superb."
"They voted the president out," he told the Daily Caller. "And that means that we have a mandate to pass sensible legislation."
Issa was not gloating, noting that bipartisan successes in the House could serve as a launching point forfuture Senate cooperation.
"Many of the pieces of legislation that we already passed out of the House with bipartisan support from the Democrats, those kinds of pieces of legislation, I think are greatexamples ," he said, as Republicans now take over Senate majority along with the House.
Issa, 61, and the powerful head of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee who has served since 2001, enjoyed an easy re-election victory on Tuesday as he ousted Democratic challenger Dave Peiser in California's 49thCongressional District ,the Huffington Post reported.
He will return to Washington facing not only new colleagues but newly-emerging insults from the U.S. Justice Department, where Attorney General Eric Holder called Issa and his House watchdog colleagues "idiots" in newly-released "Fast and Furious" investigationdocuments , NPR reported.
Wrote Holder in a 2011 memo: "Issa and his idiot cronies never gave a damn about this when all that was happening was that thousands of Mexicans were being killed with guns from our country. All they want to do — in reality — is cripple ATF and suck up to the gun lobby. Politics at its worst — maybe the media will get it."
Issa says he will focus on righting "glaring" mistakes made by the Obama administration, which led to the Democrats' deep midterm defeats, the Daily Caller noted.
"There are glaring mistakes that have happened in this administration that need to be corrected," he said, noting of GOP successes: "I think it is very much an example where even when people didn't want to be seen with the president, they were still seen as being with the president."
