Donald Trump has made pointed comments about Mexican immigrants alleged criminal tendencies that has cost him contracts with NBC, Univision and Macy’s.
But it has apparently resonated with Republicans and paid off for him in the polls where he places in a strong second place nationally among Republican candidates.
Two national surveys of GOP voters was released today which both show Trump in second place to Jeb Bush.
Trump commented, “I am committed to addressing the issues our country is facing and am confident my business mindset and common sense solutions are resonating with the American people.”
“Politicians are all talk and no action and the American public is ready for a leader with a proven track record of success,” he continued. “These poll results are representative of the response we are receiving from all over the country.”
Trump followed Bush in back-to-back polls conducted in New Hampshire by two local entities, Suffolk University and WWMR.
The same standings were confirmed by a Fox News poll which identified Carson in third place behind Bush.
A CNN/ORC International poll over the weekend also confirmed the standings, with Bush receiving 19%, Trump 12% of the vote to run first and second. Mike Huckabee received 8% of the vote. Ted Cruz had fallen to a distant 3% in a tie with Chris Christie.
These ‘temperature-taking polls’ show Trump’s bounce to the top has come at the expense of the early darlings, especially Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, Ted Cruz and former leader of the pack Marco Rubio, whose ‘new-candidate smell’ wore off quickly.
The results of the June 26-28 poll:
Jeb Bush – 19%
Donald Trump – 12%
Mike Huckabee – 8%
Ben Carson – 7%
Rand Paul – 7%
Marco Rubio – 6%
Scott Walker – 6%
Rick Perry – 4%
Chris Christie – 3%
Ted Cruz – 3%
Rick Santorum – 3%
Bobby Jindal – 2%
John Kasich – 2%
Carly Fiorina – 1%
George Pataki – ?%
Someone else – 7%
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is expected to get the typical boost that accompanies announcing a committed run for the presidency. His announcement is expected July 12th.
At 3%, Cruz is in that last tier of contenders that could be excluded from the first debate.
Whichever Republican wins the party’s nomination, polls show Hillary Clinton winning the election by a minimum 13% margin. She out-performs Jeb Bush by a 54-41% margin. Interestingly, the Republican would fare the worst would be Donald Trump, who polled to lose to Hillary by 15%.
Clinton has seen her lead erode in the wake of an assortment of scandals that tarnish her to a degree. Within her own party, her lead has decreased by 12 points, which helps Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, who has not yet tossed his hat into the ring.
