Former Sen. Alan Simpson: Throw Cruz Out of Senate

Former Wyoming Sen. Alan Simpson tells Newsmax TV he is "spooked" by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and that he should be removed from his job.
"Anybody that calls a majority leader a liar on the floor of the U.S. Senate ought to be canned and thrown out of the Senate," Simpson said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."
Cruz's comments came after the Senate passed the $1.1 trillion budget deal against the wishes of conservative members of the Republican Party, including Cruz.
"What we just saw today was an absolute demonstration that [contradicts] not only what he told every Republican senator, but what he told the press over and over and over again, [it] was a simple lie," Cruz told his colleagues. "We know now that when the majority leader looks us in the eyes and makes an explicit commitment, that he is willing to say things that he knows are false. That has consequences for how this body operates."
Cruz may be leading in the presidential polls in Iowa, Simpson said, but he noted that Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum have done well there too, only to go down "like a flaming comet."
On a separate issue, Simpson said GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump shouldn't hold his breath waiting for an apology from Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
"She's never going to do anything," Simpson said. "She spent her whole life not apologizing to anybody. Why would you start now at this age?"
Simpson rattled off a list of things from Whitewater to the White House Travel Office firings for which Clinton never apologized for.
"The woman is impervious to apologies," Simpson said.
Trump demanded an apology after Clinton in Saturday's Democratic debate said Islamic State (ISIS) recruiters are using Trump's comments about banning Muslims in recruitment videos.
Fact-checkers found there to be no such videos that are known, and Clinton's team on Monday said she had been referring to videos of his statements, and did not mean to say Trump was being used in ISIS-produced videos.
Simpson is a supporter of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, but said he understands the appeal of Trump.
Trump takes an "iron fist" to political correctness, which most Americans are becoming tired of, he said, "in their lives, in the education community, in universities, for God's sake."
"Who are we going to offend the next time?" he asked. "I'm 84 years old. I was offended and had people bully me and punch me around, and here I am. You work through that."
The "poor gentle souls" who find themselves so easily offended "need to get a warm bath and have a cognac," Simpson said.
Bush's lack of success in the race is puzzling, Simpson said. His eight years of experience as governor made him the most qualified of all the candidates, he said.
"Those who didn't like his dad or his brother, they take it out on him," Simpson said. "He hadn't been in an active campaign for a lot of years. He'd been out in the corporate world, earning bucks like all of them do."
