Sen. Ted Cruz’s CNN debate performance in Las Vegas Tuesday night won him no support with the chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee.
Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., told reporters Wednesday that Cruz may have inadvertently discussed classified information while butting heads with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio on surveillance programs.

“The old program covered 20 percent to 30 percent of phone numbers to search for terrorists. The new program covers nearly 100 percent. That gives us greater ability to stop acts of terrorism, and [Rubio] knows that that’s the case,” the Texas senator said while discussing the National Security Agency.
Rubio countered, “I don’t think national television in front of 15 million people is the place to discuss classified information.”
The Cruz campaign said nothing was revealed that could not be found in a Feb. 14, 2014, Washington Post article.
“In 2006, a senior U.S. official said, the NSA was collecting ‘closer to 100′ percent of Americans’ phone records from a number of U.S. companies under a then-classified program, but as of last summer that share had plummeted to less than 30 percent,” the newspaper reported at the time.
Burr told reporters Wednesday that it was too soon to tell if Cruz’s campaign is correct.
“I’m having my staff look at the transcripts of the debate right now,” said Burr, the Hill reported. “Any time you deal with numbers … the question is, ‘Is that classified or not?’ Or is there an open source reference to it? I would be a lot more worried if he was in fact a member of the committee, but to my understanding this subject matter was not one where any members outside of the committee had been briefed on it.”
Burr did not say whether or not there would be consequences if it is determined Cruz leaked classified information.

When radio host Rush Limbaugh learned of Burr’s comments, he suggested the probe was another part of the establishment GOP looking to destroy an anti-establishment candidate.
“Are you kidding me?” asked Limbaugh. “This is made to order, precisely the kind of thing I have been talking about today. Richard Burr, a Republican, is going to go after Ted Cruz. After all of the shenanigans this administration and Hillary Clinton have been engaged in, we’re now gonna target Ted Cruz for revealing classified information in the debate last night. Well, this should be worth a few more points to Cruz. I mean, here comes the establishment targeting the guy. Republican primary voters will flock to Cruz as a result.”
“This is meant to do harm,” Limbaugh noted. “And, remember, the establishment has decided that Rubio is next up after Jeb.”
An unscientific poll of Drudge Report readers Tuesday night crowned front-runner Donald Trump the winner of the final Republican debate of 2015. The billionaire was favored by 43 percent of respondents. Cruz came in second place with 27 percent.
