Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who dropped out of the GOP presidential race on Wednesday, has thrown his support behind Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

"We are suspending our campaign as of this moment," Santorum said during an in-studio appearance on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

Reports had begun to surface earlier in the day that Santorum would end his campaign, but staff did not confirm the reports before his appearance on Fox News at about 7:30 p.m. Eastern.

Santorum said he decided to back Rubio because he espoused the values he believes in and supports people without college degrees "struggling on the margins." Rubio also understands the threat of the Islamic State (ISIS), he said.
