Ted Cruz has a good chance of winning enough delegates to deny Donald Trump the GOP presidential nomination on a second ballot during July's Republican convention, The Washington Post reports.
That means it's essential for Trump, the Republican presidential front-runner, to amass the 1,237 delegates he needs to clinch the nomination straight out, according to the newspaper.

Trump senior advisor Paul Manafort said he's confident the billionaire developer will win before the July convention.

"There's not going to be a second ballot," Manafort said.

But the newspaper says Trump's quest to get the needed number of delegates "has only gotten narrower after losing to Cruz in Wisconsin and other recent contests, and would require him to perform better in the remaining states than he has to this point."

At the moment, the delegate count is:
  • Donald Trump: 743
  • Ted Cruz: 545
  • John Kasich: 143
Trump has been on the warpath against the Republican National Committee after rule changes the party implemented in Colorado last year allowed Cruz to scoop up all the state's delegates without a popular vote.
The next major primary is in New York next Tuesday. Trump is expected to win The Empire State's GOP contest by a large margin.
