Betsy DeVos, a Michigan Republican and charter school advocate, has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Education Department.
Trump said Wednesday that he plans to appoint the school-choice proponent to head the agency in charge of the nation’s education policy.
DeVos is the head of the education group American Federation for Children.
“Betsy DeVos is a brilliant and passionate education advocate,” Trump said in a statement released today. “Under her leadership, we will reform the U.S. education system and break the bureaucracy that is holding our children back so that we can deliver world-class education and school choice to all families.”
According to the Detroit News, DeVos is a member of several groups that support controversial Common Core state curriculum standards — but she clarified on Twitter where she stands.

In her own statement, DeVos said she plans to “make American education great again.”
