The University of Wisconsin chapter of the Muslim Students' Association
is asking women on campus to wear traditional Muslim headscarves—
as part of “Islam Appreciation Week.”

The event, called “Hijabi for a Day,” is supposed to give women on campus
a taste of what it’s like to be Muslim.

According to University of Wisconsin’s student newspaper, the Badger Herald,
the event is supposed to “normalize hijabs and address Islamophobia on
campus.”
A hijab is the headscarf worn by some Muslim women—not to be confused
with a burqa, which covers most of the face.

During the event, women received a headscarf in the morning and were
assigned a “buddy”—a Muslim woman who wears the hijab daily. After
wearing the Muslim garb for the day, they came back together to “reflect
on the experiences and describe their feelings” about it.

The Muslim Students’ Association has hundreds of chapters in the U.S.
and Canada—but it’s no stranger to controversy. It was founded in
1963 by students tied to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement—a
group considered a terrorist organization by many governments.
