Another Tragic Day in America's
Most Violent City
This is just terrible. Chicago has descended into total anarchy:
Six people, including a 12-year-old girl, were shot Wednesday night on
Chicago's South Side during a memorial for a victim of a previous act of
gun violence, police said.
The shootings occurred about 8:16 p.m. in the city’s Greater Grand Crossing
community in a "business establishment" on the 500 block of East 75th
Street, Chicago police said.
Community activist Jedidiah Brown told reporters that "the opposition" to
those attending the memorial came through an alley before opening fire on
the group of mourners. He added that the mother of the person being
memorialized was also among the victims, though police have not
confirmed that information.
A 12-year-old girl suffered a graze wound to the head from a bullet, police
said, and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where her condition had
stabilized.
We've talked a lot about President Obama failing to take any sort of action,
even as a private citizen and a former Illinois Senator, to speak out against
violence in Chicago. But at some point we have to ask: What the hell are the
people with any sort of means to stop this in Chicago doing?
Last year, Chicago had more homicides than New York and Los Angeles
combined.
We don't know what the solution is. Chicago already has a lot of police. ,
but the department is racked by legitimate civil rights abuses and corruption.
They've tried stop and frisk. None of it has worked to stem the tide of violence.
Here's a suggestion: the wealthy, limousine liberals who live in Chicago's
affluent neighborhoods need to take ownership of the economically depressed
parts of their city. Perhaps instead of dropping their donor dollars on
multinational organizations and joining the Peace Corps, they should consider
investing their time and money in their own community. They should stop
expecting excessive taxes on the wealthy and welfare programs to help
people regain the pride and self-respect that goes into building communities,
and put their money where their mouth is by helping their neigbhors empower
themselves.
In the meantime, the city should allow law abiding citizens to defend
themselves with firearms. Liberal lunacy on guns is tolerable in safe cities
like New York where police seem to be on every corner and violence is
at a nadir. It is unacceptable in a place where lower than dirt thugs target
innocent mourners at a memorial service.
