President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday reinstating the so-called “Mexico City policy,” which bans foreign aid from going to nongovernmental organizations that promote or pay for abortion procedures, according to the Washington Post.
The order will strip funds from organizations such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
TheBlaze previously reported that the Mexico City policy, referred to as the “Global Gag Rule” by pro-choice groups, was first enacted by former President Ronald Reagan. Each Republican president since 1984 has authorized it, and each Democratic president has overturned it.
The administration announced Trump’s order the day after the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Jan. 22, 1973, Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
In a statement, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) praised the executive order.
“President Trump is wasting no time acting on his promises,” Ryan said, adding, “He has renewed President Reagan’s policy to ensure American taxpayers are not forced to subsidize abortions anywhere in the world.”
Cecile Richards, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, criticized the decision on Twitter, as did her organization.
