5 Middle Schoolers Threw a Wood Block at Trump's Motorcade. Now They're Learning a Hard Lesson
On Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump traveled by presidential motorcade from a Florida airport to his Mar-a-Lago estate.
His security detail successfully completed the transfer. However, it was not without incident.
CBS12 reported that while driving down Southern Boulevard, one of the vehicles was struck by a “small, hard” object.
After completing the motorcade, several members returned to the scene to search for suspects and the item, as disclosed by the Daily Mail.
Police later identified the object as a 2“ by 4” inch wood block, and addressed the situation on its Facebook page:
The post, in part, read:
“The investigation determined that a juvenile from a local middle school confessed to throwing the 2 x 4 (see attached) at the motorcade. The juvenile also implicated four additional students that were involved for a total of five.”
The five local middle school kids now face charges that will be filed with the Palm Beach County States Attorney's Office.
According to CNN, there was a group of protesters demonstrating on the corner at the time of the incident; although, it is unclear if the suspects have any connection to the demonstration.
Joyce Judd, a local woman, drew on the distinct change in behavior over the last 50 years. She commented on the Facebook post:
“I remember when Pres. Kennedy would fly in to PBIA. We would line Southern Blvd and wait for the red Cadillac convertible to pass by. No one ever would have thought to throw anything at his car (or him) ... It is a sad testimony to our country that in 50 years, our attitudes and behaviors have changed so much. It is shameful behavior...and I am ashamed that it happened in my hometown.”
While everyone seemed to agree “kids do stupid stuff,” opinions differed greatly on what the appropriate punishment should be. One user hopes the “thugs” are “prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” while another user claimed they “deserve a medal.”
Eileen Flynn Bates commended the police for finding the suspects, and asked them to not back down. She wrote:
“Good job, now follow through S/A Office. This is serious. Hold the parents accountable, seeing how they fail to control their children.”
Kelly Sciullo reminded Facebook users that the suspect in question is a “child” that should face punishment, but not have “their life ruined,” either.
She recommended community service, and a long conversation about their actions, so the unfortunate circumstance can become a teaching moment.
According to CBS, no one was hurt in the incident, and the specific charges nor potential repercussions have been released.
