California Homeowner Shoots, Kills Two Robbers In Self-Defense
“I’m ticked off."
A homeowner shot and killed two robbers who tried to break into his Brentwood, Calif., home last Wednesday evening.
Ellis Williams III, 38, and Joseph Brooks, 32, both suffered fatal gunshot wounds when they tried to enter the home at around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.
One of the robbers was armed with a gun and presented an immediate threat, Brentwood police Lt. Walter O’Grodnick told the East Bay Times.
The two robbers were pronounced dead when police arrived on the scene.
Police detained the homeowner for questioning after the incident but did not arrest him.
The homeowner told police that the two men burst into his home and demanded he open his safe.
Police do not intend to charge the resident, as he acted in self-defense.
“The preliminary information shows it to be a home-invasion robbery,” O’Grodnick said. “Two suspects. One with a firearm. They presented a threat, and the shooting was prompted in self-defense.”
The incident occurred about 100 yards away from a local middle school.
It’s been over five years since the last killing in Brentwood, a city with historically low crime rates.
Reggie Nichols, a neighbor, told the East Bay Times Thursday he heard two shots, followed by an intense flurry of gunfire.
“I’m ticked off, because this kind of stuff doesn’t happen around here,” Nichols said. “It’s a good neighborhood. It’s been a really long time since something like this.”
Nichols said he saw a car speed away shortly after the shooting, suggesting that a third suspect may still be at large.
Brentwood police are still investigating the incident.
