The United States Army is now training active-duty officers to accept transgender individuals into the bathrooms (and showers) of that individual’s preferred gender, according to an excerpt from the official training manual.
The Microsoft Powerpoint slide, originally obtained by The Federalist, is titled, “Tier Three Transgender Training” and offers up a detailed example of the new policy, which includes females accepting someone with male genitalia into the female shower area.
“Following her transition from male to female (which did not include sex reassignment surgery) and gender marker change in DEERS [the Army’s personnel database], a transgender soldier begins using female barracks, bathroom and shower facilities,” the vignette says.
“Because she did not undergo a surgical change, the Soldier still has male genitalia,” it clarifies.
The training not only instructs officers to accept transgender officers in the facilities, it also states that they should not expect to have privacy either.
“Soldiers must accept living and working conditions that are often austere, primitive and characterized by little or no privacy,” the slide reads.
According to the document, any female officers who may be uncomfortable with a transgender soldier displaying their genitals in the barracks or shower will simply have to adjust and get used to it, because it explicitly states that transgender officers do not need to modify their behaviors for others in the facility.
“[T]ransgender soldiers are not required or expected to modify or adjust their behavior based on the fact that they do not ‘match’ other soldiers,” it says.
In June last year, Defense Secretary Ash Carter — working under former President Barack Obama — repealed the longtime ban on transgenders serving openly in the military. The Pentagon gave the services one year to determine and implement new procedures that would be necessary for the policy changes, including new guidelines for handling transgender soldiers in showers and bathrooms.
