Secretary of Defense James Mattis showed what he was made of on Friday when he became aware that traffic might make him late for a speech he was scheduled to deliver.
Mattis was traveling to Johns Hopkins University to to unveil the newest version of the National Defense Strategy when it became apparent that the motorcade was going to be late, according to the Independent Journal Review.
Being late was not on the retired Marine’s agenda, so he got out of the vehicle and walked the last 15 minutes to make it on time.
Dana White, chief spokesman for the Pentagon, posted an image of Mattis and his staff walking to their destination.

“Great power competition, not terrorism, is now the primary focus of U.S. national security,” Mattis said, Fox News reported.
“We face growing threats from revisionist powers as different as China and Russia, nations that seek to create a world consistent with their authoritarian models,” he added.
He also said that America’s ability to respond to threats has declined over time.
“Our competitive edge has eroded in every domain of warfare — air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace — and is continually eroding,” he said, adding that modernization is key to a strong military.
