At least eight students have been reportedly killed and a gunman is in custody following a shooting Friday morning at Santa Fe High School in Texas.
Santa Fe Independent School District confirmed there were injuries following an “active shooter” and that the situation has been “contained,” in a post on the school’s official Facebook page.
Santa Fe High School Assistant Principal Cris Richardson told the Houston Chroniclethat a gunman has been “arrested and secured.”
The Chronicle and KHOU-TV report that at least eight students have been killed, citing federal law enforcement sources.
Ed Gonzalez, the sheriff of neighboring Harris County, tweeted that one suspect was in custody and one other person had been detained.
A police officer was also injured and was being tweeted, Gonzalez said.
University of Texas Medical Branch said doctors were treating three patients from the shooting, two adults and one minor.
Students at Santa Fe High School told local TV stations that the gunman opened fire in an art class at the school during first period around 7:45 a.m.
“This morning an incident occurred at the high school involving an active shooter. The situation is active, but has been contained. There have been confirmed injuries,” the school district wrote.
“Details will be released as we receive updated information. Law enforcement will continue to secure the building and initiate all emergency management protocols to release and move students to another location. All other campuses are operating under their regular schedules.”
Students are being evacuated from the school and bused to nearby Alamo Gym so that they can be reunited with their parents.
President Donald Trump tweeted his condolences for the victims. “School shooting in Texas. Early reports not looking good. God bless all!” he wrote.
An emergency dispatcher for Santa Fe police confirmed to TIME that officers were on scene at the school but provided no other details.
Santa Fe is about 35 miles southeast of Houston.
The shooting follows another active shooting on Wednesday at Dixon High School in central Illinois, where a school resource officer shot and wounded a former student who opened fire at the school. It comes three months after 17 people were killed the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. That shooting sparked mass protests and calls for tougher gun control restrictions in the U.S.
