The FBI likely violated federal law, according to a report from House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Cal., sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
The Nunes letter became the subject of Fox News host Sean Hannity’s opening monologue Thursday night on Hannity.

Bombshell letter

“This letter just released to the Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes is detailing how the FBI may have literally broken the law and violated bureau protocols when obtaining that FISA warrant to surveil Trump campaign associate Carter Page,” Hannity said.
“FISA” refers to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which requires court approval prior to surveilling American citizens suspected of unlawfully colluding with foreign governments.
The alleged abuses took place during the Obama administration and apparently violated FBI protocol.
“The accuracy of information contained within FISA applications is of the upmost importance,” according to FBI guidelines. “Only documented and verified information may be used to support FBI applications to the court.”
“Given this new information, Chairman Nunes is now demanding the DOJ explain if, in fact, these protocols are still in place,” Hannity continued.
“We already know the answer, they never verified this. And if they are, the Chairman wants to know how officials will be punished for violating this law and lying to a FISA judge.”
The FBI, in this case, filed an application with the FISA court for a search warrant to spy on Carter Page, who briefly served as an unpaid campaign worker for President Donald Trump during the 2016 election.

Exploding scandal

The Nunes letter also indicates that the FBI may have violated federal law, including conspiracy, obstruction of justice and contempt of court. These may be found in 18 US Code 242 and 50 US Code 1809.
“The scandal is getting bigger and bigger unlike any abuse of power we have ever seen in the history of this country. That’s why we’re peeling layer after layer from this onion,” said Hannity.

The FISA application, in this case, relied largely on an unverified and discredited “Russian dossier,” commissioned by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign. The dossier was prepared by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele.

Mueller also under attack

Hannity also observed the special counsel Robert Mueller, who heads the independent investigation into Russian influence of the 2016 election, is also facing criticism.

Ken Star, the special counsel who looked into former President Bill Clinton’s misdeeds, said that “Mueller might be crossing a line,”
Star told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that Mueller’s probe into Trump’s business dealings before 2016 was “beyond his mandate.”
