Should We Go To War With Iran?

Cogent, concise arguments are sometimes hard to come by. However, in the following article, Bruce Thornton, writing in FrontPage Magazine today, makes a very good case for military action against Iran. We were impressed with his explanation of the power structure in Iran and how religion directs it.

This is an excellent article. You might disagree with the premise but he makes a good case to taking  action against Iranian assets in an attempt to bring about change in the country. This is a good starting point for a discussion on the potential of a war with Iran. Do we want one?  Our answer would be no. However, if they shut the Straits or fire on one of our ships or other asset, it may come to that.

What is your opinion?

The Case for Military Action Against Iran

Bruce Thornton - FrontPage Magazine,  January 10th, 2012

Iran’s 30-year war against the United States may be reaching its decisive moment. Signs of the worsening crisis abound. Iran just announced it has begun enriching uranium at the Fordo underground nuclear site, a key step to producing more quickly fissile material for a nuclear warhead. As Europe moves closer to embargoing Iranian oil, deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guard Ali Ashraf Nouri threatens, “ If enemies block the export of our oil, we won’t allow a drop of oil to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. In support of this threat, the regime continues to stage war games in the area and to warn American warships from passing through the strait into the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile the U.S. and Israel have announced a joint missile defense exercise, as Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visits America’s enemies in Latin America, bearding the U.S. lion in its own hemisphere of influence.
Iran may be just indulging bluster and bluff. Perhaps the mullahs recall the severe punishment inflicted on its navy in 1988 during the Tanker War, an earlier attempt to disrupt oil shipments transiting the Persian Gulf. That effort ended when Ronald Reagan retaliated for a missile attack on an American warship by eventually destroying two Iranian oil platforms, two Iranian ships, and six Iranian gunboats. Yet our current president has not shown as yet any of Ronald Reagan’s guts and nerve, and the mullahs may be calculating that the bluff will work.
And why wouldn’t they? Iran has been killing Americans for 30 years with impunity, from the 241 military personnel killed in Beirut by a suicide bomber, to the hundreds more soldiers murdered in Iraq and Afghanistan by Iranian proxy terrorist outfits trained and armed by Tehran. Repeated rounds of sanctions, threats, U.N. Security Council resolutions, and deadlines for cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors have been contemptuously ignored. Our citizens are arrested and held on trumped-up charges, our ally Israel is threatened with genocide, and incessant anti-American “Great Satan” rhetoric daily pours from Tehran. Just this week a former American Marine was condemned to death by an Iranian court for allegedly being a spy and a “mohareb,” or “fighter against God.” Yet Obama has answered this aggression against our security and interests with appeasing diplomatic “outreach” offered “without preconditions,” and pleas for “mutual respect” that the regime correctly interprets as a sign of weakness and failure of nerve.
Given that Iranian aggression has so far provoked appeasement and empty threats, the mullahs very well could believe that since they are the “best of nations,” as the Koran has it, in any conflict Allah will protect the Islamic Republic and render insignificant America’s overwhelming military superiority. After all, Muslims for centuries have believed in their superiority based on Allah’s special regard for them, as aviator Antoine de Saint-ExupĂ©ry noted in 1939: “Their [Muslims] pride was born of the illusion of their power. Allah renders a believer invincible.” The mullahs today will remember what the Ayatollah Khomeini said in 1980, after America’s ill-planned and half-hearted mission to rescue the embassy hostages was ignominiously thwarted by a sandstorm that caused two helicopters to crash and burn: “Those sand particles were divinely commissioned. . . . [President] Carter still has not comprehended what kind of people he is facing. . . . Our people is the people of blood and our school is the school of Jihad.”
Thirty years later, we still have not “comprehended” the nature of the Iranian enemy. We have continuously operated with a materialist calculus that ignores the spiritual motives that account for much of Iranian aggression. More depressing still, this is the same mistake the Carter administration made in 1979, when it ignored the religious roots of the Iranian Revolution, dismissed Khomeini as “nutty” and “a crazy man,” as Carter did, and assumed that the secular political parties and technical elites would eventually rule Iran and marginalize the mullahs, virulent Iranian hostility would wane, and “after a transition period common interests could provide a basis for future cooperation,” as an assistant to the Secretary of State reported. Similarly the West today has assumed that economic punishment, or the desire for “greater international integration,” as Obama put it, can change Iranian behavior. We still don’t believe what a member of the Revolutionary Council said a few months after the seizure of our embassy: “No individual, no official and no Muslim has the right to show forbearance or compromise toward an enemy who is not defeated and is not overthrown.”
The melancholy lesson of history is that force is the “strong magic” that compels fanatical believers to abandon their murderous ideologies or keep them within their own borders. Equivocating about the use of force, or pursuing non-lethal ways to change behavior, such as diplomatic negotiation or economic sanctions, only convinces the fanatic aggressor that he has the gods or history or destiny on his side, that his enemy is weak and lacks conviction, and that a few more blows will achieve the aggressor’s aims. Nor does it matter if the failure to retaliate actually reflects other concerns such as political expediency. There were many reasons Clinton withdrew our forces from Somalia in 1993 after the “Blackhawk Down” battle in which 18 U.S. servicemen were killed, but political self-interest and survival were clearly the most important. Yet to bin Laden, the retreat from Mogadishu was like the withdrawal from Vietnam and Beirut after the Marine barracks bombing: the result of America’s “low spiritual morale” and “cowardice and feebleness.” And that perception fed bin Laden’s certainty that the U.S. rested on “foundations of straw” and could be toppled with spectacular terrorist attacks.
Settling the conflict with Iran and keeping it from acquiring nuclear weapons, then, will in the end be achieved with mind-concentrating force that convinces the mullahs to change their ways. One place to start would be to destroy Iran’s navy and shore missile batteries in the Persian Gulf. Degrading the military assets, bases, and production facilities of the Iranian Republican Guard Corp and the paramilitary Basij might provide an opportunity for the dormant Green Revolutionaries to effect regime change. As Indiana University’s Jamsheed K. Choksy wrote in The Wall Street Journal, “Once the power of the Basij and the IRGC to enforce the regime’s will upon the people has been seriously compromised, it would not be surprising to see large segments of Iran’s population casting off the theocratic yoke.” A saner regime perhaps would be more amenable to abandoning the pursuit of nuclear weapons.
The time is fast running out on policies that refuse to accept the necessity of force in changing Iranian behavior. Military action obviously involves unknowable risks and costs; but allowing a rogue regime, one situated in the middle of a region that produces one-fifth of the world’s oil, to acquire nuclear weapons will likely end up subjecting our security and interests to much greater risks and much higher costs.

Danger Will Robinson! Danger!

No, there are no space invaders or dangerous aliens attacking Will Robinson, just a Congress that can't stop spending money and a President who does not seem to understand that unless drastic steps are taken, the US will become the next Greece.  The US now has debt equal to all the goods and services produced by the economy!  This is not some third world country, it is the largest economy in the world.  When are our leaders going to awaken from their stupor? When are Americans going to get angry and demand changes?

CNN.com on July 21, 2011( edition.cnn.com/2011/BUSINESS/...debt.../index.ht... - United Kingdom)   reported the following:
"Topping the European debt league is Greece with 142.8% government debt to GDP ratio, followed by Italy (119.0%), Belgium (96.8%) Ireland (96.2%), Portugal (93.0%), Germany (83.2%), France (81.7%) Hungary (80.2%) and the United Kingdom (80.0%)."

The article continued:
"The lowest government debt to GDP ratios were recorded in Estonia (6.6%), Bulgaria (16.2%) and Luxembourg (18.4%), according to the Eurostat report."

Our debt is worse than Belgium, Ireland, Portugal, and Hungary. All but Belgium are members of the PHIIGS (Portugal,Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain), the name given to the sickest economies in Europe. What company we are keeping!

If this does not focus our attention on the issues facing us, nothing will. We must cut spending and find ways to increase our GDP or we will face the same situation that Greece is. Do we really want other countries dictating what we can spend our money on or what benefits we can give our citizens?  We won't have a choice unless WE make some very hard choices. Life cannot go on as it has been!

We have heard the political candidates espouse various plans and we like some of them, however, unless and until the American people buy into the need for drastic action, there will be no action.  And understanding human nature, we believe there will be NO action on this until it is  too late.  At that time, watch the finger pointing!

The United States is in pretty bad shape and we will do nothing until China calls our loans or some other drastic event occurs.  Unfortunately, we do not have a robot warning us of danger as Will Robinson did. Too bad, we need one!

U.S. DEBT IS NOW EQUAL TO ECONOMY

January 9, 2012
USA Today
Richard Wolf
WASHINGTON – The soaring national debt has reached a symbolic tipping point: It's now as big as the entire U.S. economy.
Supporters of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stand next to a national debt clock during a rally Sunday in Exeter, N.H. The debt is projected to surge.
The amount of money the federal government owes to its creditors, combined with IOUs to government retirement and other programs, now tops $15.23 trillion.
That's roughly equal to the value of all goods and services the U.S. economy produces in one year: $15.17 trillion as of September, the latest estimate. Private projections show the economy likely grew to about $15.3 trillion by December — a level the debt is likely to surpass this month.
"The 100% mark means that your entire debt is as big as everything you're producing in your country," says Steve Bell of the Bipartisan Policy Center, which has proposed cutting nearly $6 trillion in red ink over 10 years. "Clearly, that can't continue."
Long-term projections suggest the debt will continue to grow faster than the economy, which would have to expand by at least 6% a year to keep pace.
President Obama's 2012 budget shows the debt soaring past $26 trillion a decade from now. Last summer's deficit reduction deal could reduce that to $24 trillion.
Many economists, such as the Brookings Institution's William Gale, say a better measure of the nation's debt is how much the government owes creditors, not counting $4.7 trillion owed to future Social Security recipients and other government beneficiaries. By that measure, the debt is roughly a third less: $10.5 trillion, or nearly 70% the size of the economy.
That is still high by historic standards. The total national debt topped the size of the economy for three years during and after World War II. It dropped to 32.5% of the economy by 1981, then began a steady climb under President Reagan, doubling over the next 12 years. The combination of recession and stimulus spending caused it to soar again under Obama.
Among advanced economies, only Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan and Portugal have debts larger than their economies. Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Italy are at the root of the European debt crisis. The first three needed bailouts from European central banks; Italy's books are monitored by the International Monetary Fund.
The White House and Congress agreed in August to cut about $1 trillion from federal agencies over 10 years. An additional $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts looms beginning next year if lawmakers can't agree on a better way to do it.
Economist Mark Zandi of Moody's Analytics says reaching the 100% mark shows "the grave need to address our long-term fiscal problems."

Will Jews Ever Learn?

Sometimes we feel like we are screaming into the wind when we talk about Israel, the relationship between the US and Israel and President Obama. There are those who listen. And there are those strangers and some friends (and relatives) who think that we are crazy and ill-informed when we speak about our concerns.

The following article has helped us understand that we are not alone when we feel helpless, unheard and ignored as it is an inherited blindness that most Jews have. Sometimes we feel the need to scream "don't you see what Obama is doing?" Why can't they see the obvious? They are not stupid, why do they choose not to understand?

People, especially Jews, seem to be oblivious the obvious and be placated by the misleading words that have been spoken by the President.  His words say one thing but his actions are completely different.  Many years ago, a good friend told me, "Judge a man, not on what he says but what he does."  Obama's words do not match his actions.

There will be some who will mention the upcoming joint military operations that have been planned for a couple years as an indication that the relationship is as strong as ever or the limited military equipment we are selling them. This is the magician's trick, get us looking one direction while you pull the bunny out of the hat from the other.  However, one operation or equipment sale does not replace all the negative actions taken by the Obama White House.

Yet, Jews throughout this country in the upcoming Presidential election will vote in overwhelming numbers for President Obama and get insulted when you ask them, why they would vote for a man who obviously does not hold Israel or its leaders in high esteem (sometimes we even say hate Israel.)  So when we read this quote in the following article, the light came on and it became clear. The quote is:

“the Jew learns not by way of reason, but from catastrophes. He won't buy an umbrella merely because he sees clouds in the sky.  He waits until he is drenched and catches pneumonia.”

Wow, what an insight! This quote is over 200 years old but it really sums up the Jewish intellect and their intentional avoidance of the real world around them.  Why would Jews in Germany ignore the very clear propaganda message being sent by the Nazis? Their leaders and they thought it never would occur in Germany, the home of Bach and Beethoven.  The handwriting was on the wall, but instead of paying attention, they whitewashed it.

Jewish holidays celebrate biblical victories but since the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D., there have been none, only defeats until the establishment of Israel in 1948.
They have gotten so used to being beat up and kicked around, they think it is normal.  Jews have been kicked out of nearly every country (except the US) in the world at one time or another.

Now the US might be heading down that same path.  It is clear to anyone paying attention that if President Obama is re-elected, this country will abandon Israel, leaving it to stand alone against the world. No UN assistance will be forthcoming. No help from England or France will be there. Tiny Israel will have to fend for herself and when it wins (and it will), the world will demand they make concessions even before the war  is over!

So what happens when Israel is abandoned by the US? Initially, there will be sanctions placed on it as a result of some event where Palestinians are killed. An apology will be demanded and when that is not forthcoming, the sanctions will be applied. Additionally we suspect, the President will place Israel on a terrorist nation list which will cut off all military and foreign aid as well as prohibiting Americans from sending money or travelling to the "rogue nation." We indeed hope we are wrong but with history as our guide and clear headed evaluation of the situation, we do not think we are.

We need to make Jews around the world aware of the issues facing Israel and how their support of President Obama and other national leaders is detrimental to the Jewish state.  We must not vote for the President's reelection for if he is given four more years, the shabby treatment given Israel in his first term will only get worse. Without having to worry about another election, he will be free to do as he pleases. This will not be good.

We do not plan to be quiet. We will be obnoxiously loud about this issue. If one person hears our message, that will be a victory. Will you join us to spread the word? We do not want to get pneumonia when a simple umbrella would have prevented it.

Please read the following article. It is a mind-blower and definitely worth the time.

Looming Destruction: Will Jews Ever Learn?

Victor Sharpe - American Thinker,  January 8th, 2012

On the eve of the Second World War, Chaim Weizmann, who was to become Israel's first president, wrote the following about the persecutions taking place in Nazi Germany:
It would require the eloquence of a Jeremiah to picture the horrors, the human anguish, of this new Destruction and of a new book of Lamentations to depict the present plight of Israel among the nations.
Several decades earlier, Max Nordau, one of the most noted European philosophers of the 19th century, and supporter of Theodore Herzl, once told the great Zionist leader and Jewish patriot, Vladimir Jabotinsky, that “the Jew learns not by way of reason, but from catastrophes. He won't buy an umbrella merely because he sees clouds in the sky.  He waits until he is drenched and catches pneumonia.”
This prescient observation foreshadowed the many anti-Jewish pogroms that followed in the bloodiest of all centuries: the twentieth.  It also led, inexorably, to the swallowing up of the Jews of Europe by the calamitous German Nazi juggernaut, complete with enforced ghettoes, roving killing squads (the einsatzgruppen), the death camps, the gas chambers, and the starvation and horrors that forever will darken the face of Europe.
Before the Second World War broke out on September 3, 1939, Jabotinsky repeatedly warned the leaders of the Jewish communities what lay in store for them.  He begged them to defend themselves and endeavor to send as many people as possible to safety amongst their fellow Jews in British Mandatory Palestine.  This was before the British government slammed shut the gates of Mandatory Palestine to the desperate Jews fleeing Nazi genocide.
Both Max Nordau and Theodore Herzl had, many years earlier, warned the Jews that their future lay not in Europe, but in a reborn Jewish state, hopefully arising in the ancestral and biblical homeland, then known as Palestine and suffering under a 400-year-old Turkish Ottoman occupation.
In his book on the life of Jabotinsky, Shmuel Katz quoted from the great man's article, “Rattling off the Doloys,” in which Jabotinsky condemned the leaders of the Jewish communities and the assimilationists who refused to consider leaving Europe even as the ground was beginning to burn under their feet.  He pleaded with them thus in July 1939:
And I tell you, my dear colleagues, that this means going forward to destruction. D-E-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-O-N. Learn the word by heart; and God grant that I am mistaken. If such words as treachery are being flung around, I regard every one as a traitor who helps to obscure the urgency of the most urgent of all the problems besetting the Jews in Eastern Europe.
And he referred to latent anti-Semitism as the sleeping “beast” which soon will again awaken and show itself among the Jews with redoubled appetite.  He added, “May God protect His people from a thousandth part of the pleasures the beast is promising himself in his brief sleep.”
Jabotinsky's appeals fell on mostly deaf ears, and he was accused of being an alarmist.  After all, these leaders countered, how could a civilized nation like Germany do such terrible things?  It was unthinkable.  And the result — the Holocaust –  was unthinkable, with the almost total destruction of European Jewry.
But decades before, the same Jabotinsky saw his dreams of a secure Jewish State in the lands both west and east of the Jordan River eroded by many of his fellow Jewish leaders in the Zionist movement.  They preferred to ignore or shrug off the steady betrayal of the Balfour Declaration by successive British politicians.
These Jewish leaders preferred passivity and a reluctance to confront His Majesty's government even as it diluted its obligations to the League of Nations' mandate for Palestine, which instructed Great Britain as the mandatory power to facilitate the establishment of a Jewish National Home on both sides of the Jordan River.
Jabotinsky died from a massive heart attack — but also from a broken heart — at a Betar youth camp near the town of Hunter in New York State in 1940.  It is no wonder that his profound disappointment at the way Britain reneged on its promises to the Jewish people, and the way many of his own colleagues let him down over many years, led him to sum it all up in the Latin phrase “homo homini lupus — man to his fellow man is a wolf.”
Jabotinsky is buried next to Theodore Herzl on Jerusalem's Mount Zion.  But his life's work on behalf of the ever-persecuted Jewish masses was undone by far too many of his Jewish and Zionist contemporaries.
Jabotinsky, who almost singlehandedly created the Jewish Legion — which fought heroically and helped liberate the geographical territory of Palestine from the Turkish yoke — forever was forced to fight those of his colleagues who were faint of heart or obscurantist.
Elias Gilner, the author of War and Hope, The history of the Jewish Legion, described Jabotinsky's Herculean efforts as follows:
He had reached the soul of his people; he had overcome the stolidity and short-sightedness of small men in high places; he had defeated the myopic Zionist “friends” and prevaricating assimilationist foes. He had triumphed.
But, as the above shows, his triumph was fleeting.
Now fast-forward one hundred and seven years to 2012 and to what Jabotinsky would see if he were able to miraculously return to life.  The State of Israel, despite often suffering from the same “shortsightedness of small men in high places,” has nevertheless managed wondrous achievements since its rebirth in 1948 in its ancestral and biblical homeland.
But acts so antithetical to all that Jabotinsky stood for continue unabated.  Successive Israeli governments expel Jewish villagers and townsfolk from ancestral territory.  They have done it both in Gaza and throughout Judea and Samaria (the so-called West Bank).  In Gaza, their homes, farms, and schools — and even their cemeteries, where many victims of Arab terror had been buried — were given away to the ever-hostile Muslim Arabs — the same ones who call themselves Palestinians but who are a fraudulent and invented people.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who now lies in a coma, created this plan, which he called “disengagement.”  He felt that by arbitrarily retreating from areas of the Land of Israel he would reduce or even end international pressure for further withdrawals.  But the United States administration under George Bush and now under Barack Hussein Obama, as well as the international community, jumped upon this concept of retreat and predictably demanded further withdrawals without end.
President Bush, despite claims by Prime Minister Sharon that the president recognized Israel's communities across the green line, such as Ma'aleh Adumim and Ariel, expected Israel to make additional withdrawals.  Under President Obama, the demand is for Israel to return to the 1949 armistice lines — described by former Foreign Minister Abba Eban as the Auschwitz borders.  This threat still hangs over Israel.
Sharon thus opened a monstrous can of worms and set in motion an unholy precedent.  The discredited idea of “land for peace,” whereby Israel always gives away land but never receives peace, was bad enough, but then “disengagement” became a euphemism for all that Jabotinsky fought against in his lifetime.
Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian leader and Holocaust-denier, embraced by Presidents Bush and Obama as a “man of peace,” has no intention of ending the appalling anti-Jewish incitement broadcast by his Palestinian Authority-controlled media — in itself a broken Palestinian obligation under the Oslo Accords.
Abbas will continue to press for the U.N.'s acceptance of a state called Palestine with its capital in Jerusalem.  If he succeeds, with the willing connivance of an ever more anti-Israel United Nations, the city will be divided again, and — for the first time in history — Arabs and the Islamic world may yet celebrate Jerusalem as the capital of an Arab state.  Abbas will still call for Israel to be flooded with the millions of descendants of those Arabs who were urged to leave by their corrupt leadership in the 1948 Arab-Israel war.  This, the entire world knows, will mark the end of the one and only sovereign Jewish state — what the fifty-seven Muslim states and so many other nations in the world relish.
Endless concessions to the late Yasser Arafat were greeted by him and by all Arabs as signs of Israeli weakness.  Doing the same with Abbas is no different — the practice merely reveals the absence of logic by far too many Israeli politicians and follows the dreary and myopic tradition exemplified by the “short-sightedness of small men in high places.”
In a depressing way, Max Nordau was right about many of his fellow Jews.  The present Israeli government, like the leaders of European Jewry before them who spurned and derided the impassioned and desperate pleas of Jabotinsky, the “Jewish Garibaldi,” is in danger of again ignoring the heavy rain clouds above.
But I fear that the world today, especially with Barack Hussein Obama as president and commander in chief of the United States, will repeat what happened to the isolated Jews during the Holocaust: it will look away.
The world, which is still so foolishly dependent on its oil supplies from hate-filled Middle Eastern mullahs, sheikhs, kings, dictators, and tyrants, may for economic reasons — and, sadly, thanks to endemic anti-Jewish prejudices — again do nothing or actively embrace and assist yet another holocaust, this time enveloping the six million Jews of the reconstituted and embattled State of Israel.
Let us hope that, empty White House assurances aside, the Jewish state will finally learn from history and act before it suffers not pneumonia, but an Iranian nuclear winter.

Daley Leaving White House

It must have been  a rough year  for Chief of Staff William Daley who is leaving the White House. We had heard that he had been marginalized and left out of the circle of Obama advisers a couple months ago so we were not entirely surprised by his resignation.

This tells us more about the White House than Bill Daley.  If a Chicago insider (he is the brother and son of past mayors) cannot have input in this White House, we can expect more people exiting.  Already all of Obama's initial economic advisers except Gaithner had left.  Rahm Emanuel (his initial chief of staff) and Robert Gibbs (his spokesman) have departed. Who will be next?

Add to this the new book about the Obama White House which seems to show a ill-functioning organization where the President does not listen to anyone except Michelle.  She seems to be finding her political voice and is apparently going to have more to say in the 2012 campaign.

The following is more on the book.
We would like your input. Will Michelle run the White House? Will it be her ideas that win the day? Is the President hen-pecked?

The Surprisingly Sharp Elbows of Michelle Obama

Reuters
    JOHN HUDSON3,223 Views10:43 AM ET
No one's ever considered Michelle Obama a docile first lady, but the catalog of aggressive confrontations and benign squabbles in Jodi Kantor's new book The Obamas are among the revelations that are making the most noise. According to New York Times reporter Kantor, so far in the White House the first lady has assumed an active role on health care and immigration reform to the chagrin of then chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel and then-press secretary Robert Gibbs. Here are the nuggets that commentators latched onto over the weekend:
Not just a mom-in-chief As The Wall Street Journal's Carol Lee notes, Michelle wasn't merely playing out a ceremonial role promoting exercise and healthy eating. She also hounded President Obama's staff if it wasn't performing up to her standards. "Mrs. Obama’s reputation for being blunt and setting high expectations for her staff is well known. But Ms. Kantor’s book shows she’s had a deep level of dissatisfaction with how her husband was conducting business in Washington and running his White House – and the level to which it impacted West Wing staff."
Enraging Gibbs According to a passage excerpted by Politico's Mike Allen, the first lady, via Valerie Jarrett, infuriated Robert Gibbs after his handling of the emergence of an unflattering story in the French press. "According to a new French book, Michelle Obama had told Carla Bruni-Sarkozy that living in the White House was hell." After a whirlwind effort, Gibbs successfully managed to get the ÉlysĂ©e Palace to issue a denial of the story and the potential crisis was averted. However, Michelle's supposed disappointment in Gibbs's work set him off:
Jarrett announced that the first lady was dissatisfied with the White House's handling of the situation. All eyes turned to Gibbs. 'Don't go there, Robert, don't do it,' another aide remembered Rahm Emanuel saying. Years of tension between Gibbs, Jarrett and an absent Michelle Obama exploded. 'Fuck this, that's not right, I've been killing myself on this, where's this coming from?' Gibbs yelled. He calmed down and tried to probe, according to a half-dozen people who witnessed the exchange. 'What is it she has concerns about?' he asked Jarrett. Jarrett said something about the reply not being fast enough. Gibbs blew up again. 'Why is she talking to you about it? If she has a problem she should talk to me!' David Axelrod was trying to soothe Gibbs. It was the calm of Jarrett's tone that finally undid Gibbs, others said later. He looked so frustrated one colleague thought he was going to cry. 'You don't know what the fuck you're talking about,' he hurled back. 'The first lady would not believe you're speaking this way.' 'Then fuck her too!' He stormed out as the rest of the group sat stunned.
The quotes make for an entertaining story of palace intrigue but not everyone's thrilled with Kantor's take. New Yorker editor David Remnick writes, "The conflict, the profanity, the yelling: it’s the sort of vivid, if ultimately meaningless, detail that provides books like Renegade, Game Change, and, now, The Obamas with their lurid and irresistible zing. Such books regard more earnest matters like history, context, and ideas the way a child looks at a plate of Brussels sprouts."
Michele and health care reform Another surprising revelation is the degree of involvement the first lady had in health care reform. In a review of the book, The Huffington Post notes that Michelle lit into her husband following the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts, blaming his advisers for being disorganized and incompetent.
Emanuel, naturally, had a different read. And according to "The Obamas," he was indignant about how the first lady handled the Brown victory. "Emanuel hated it when people criticized the administration from lofty perches," writes Kantor. "More fundamentally, the chief of staff was trying to convince the president to scale back his health care efforts, but the first lady wanted him to push forward. Emanuel wanted to win by the standard measures of presidential success: legislative victories, poll numbers. Michelle Obama had more persona criteria: Was her husband fulfilling their mission?"
In the end, Michelle Obama would win that fight. After several days of reflection, the president would push again for Congress to pass the full health care reform bill. And while he ultimately would succeed, the battles took their tolls.
Kantor writes. "His decision to pursue the health care overhaul later seemed to mark the beginning of the end of Emanuel's tenure in the White House."
Alice in Wonderland party The most tabloid-friendly scoop to come out of the book was of course the "secret" Alice in Wonderland party the White House hosted with the decorative help of Tim Burton. The New York Post describes the scene:
The book reveals how any official announcement of the glittering affair — coming at a time when Tea Party activists and voters furious over the lagging economy, 10-percent unemployment rate, bank bailouts and Obama’s health-care plan were staging protests — quickly vanished down the rabbit hole ...
“Fruit punch was served in blood vials at the bar. Burton’s own Mad Hatter, the actor Johnny Depp, presided over the scene in full costume, standing up on a table to welcome everyone in character.”
The Obamas’ daughters, Malia and Sasha, then 11 and 8 respectively, “sat at the table, surrounded by a gaggle of their friends, and then proceeded to the next delight, a magic show in the East Room.”
Pushing back against the Alice in Wonderland story, the White House insists it wasn't a secret party. "This was an event for local school children from the Washington DC area and for hundreds of military families. If we wanted this event to be a secret, we probably wouldn't have invited the press corps to cover it, release photos of it to Flickr, or post a video from it on the White House website," White House spokesman Eric Schultz said in a statement.
Michele's immigration push Another legislative priority that didn't turn out in the first lady's favor was the issue of immigration, which she was passionate about. The Huffington Post  has the details:
According to Kantor, in the lead-up to the 2010 midterm elections Emanuel and Michelle Obama were at odds over whether the president should give an address on the need for comprehensive immigration reform. The president wanted to do it. The chief of staff saw no point in pushing for legislation that had no chance of passage. The first lady, who had just been confronted by a second-grader in a Maryland elementary school whose mother didn't have immigration papers, felt that ignoring the issue was fundamentally at odds with her husband's own political story.
The Obamas won out. The president ended up writing portions of the speech himself but it ended poorly. "His impassioned remarks faded almost as soon as he gave them," writes Kantor. "The media and others were puzzled -- why this, why now?
Rahm's resignation As much of the book highlights, Emanuel's vision for the presidency often differed from Michelle's and when stories in the press began revealing these differences, Emanuel surprisingly offered his resignation, as The Washington Post:
Then-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel offered his resignation to President Barack Obama in the winter of 2010 after a series of columns appeared depicting him as the lone element keeping the Obama presidency intact. According to then senior adviser David Axelrod, Emanuel understood that the stories "were an embarrassment" to the president. The president, already suffering from a setback to his health care reform effort, declined Emanuel's offer to resign, despite being convinced that his chief of staff was the main source for the columns.

    German Bond Rates Go Negative

Today, Bloomberg reports that for the first time German bonds will pay a negative yield! That means you get back less at maturity than you paid for it. This tells us that the rest of Europe must be such a mess that you will forgo any interest to safeguard your money.  This sort of follows the Will Rogers quote "I am not interested in a return on my money, just a return of my money."

Combine this news with the report today that the US now has as much debt as GDP. Are we the next Greece? Should we be moving our money to German bonds?

Things are NOT getting better and anyone who tells you that is trying to sell you something.   Maybe, a re-election! If you watch the news, you will see an on going drum beat of "things are getting better."  The decrease in unemployment will be followed by other "economic good news."  It is all made up!

Germany Sells Bills With Negative Yield for First Time Amid Crisis Concern

Germany sold bills with a negative yield for the first time as investors sought the perceived safety of the region's benchmark securities amid concern leaders are struggling to contain the debt crisis.
The government sold six-month bills today with a yield of minus 0.01 percent, the Federal Finance Agency said today in an e-mailed statement. The auction drew bids that were about double the 3.9 billion euros ($4.98 billion) sold.
Some 25 of the Federal Finance Agency's 39-member auction group participated in the bidding, the debt agency said. Investors bid for 1.8 times the securities offered, it said.
The yield on the German two-year note was little changed at 0.16 percent as of 11:40 a.m. London time, while the 10-year yield rose three basis points to 1.88 percent.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy plan to drive forward their agenda for stricter budget rules as they seek to craft a master plan for rescuing the euro over the next three months. The two leaders have sponsored a plan to draw up new fiscal guidelines by March to resolve a crisis that began in Greece more than two years ago.
