SATELLITE images show that North Korea is preparing to trial a deadly new arsenal of submarines which could be capable of launching nuclear missiles towards the US.

The pictures show a new barge in the Nampo Naval shipyard in the west of the secretive state similar to another in the east of the country which has been involved in recent rocket tests.

Website 38North, which monitors military activity in the communist country, claims the newly-installed barge could be an indication that North Korea is planning to “accelerate its SLBM test program.”

Long-range ballistic missiles (ISBMs), and their submarine-housed counterparts (SLBMs), are rockets which can carry nuclear bombs and would be capable of striking the west coast of the US including cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle.

The 68ft barge was most likely bought from abroad and not built in North Korea, reports 38North.

It is also near-identical to another barge in the Sinpo South shipyard on the other side of hermit kingdom which has been involved in six missile test launches since 2014.

This latest development comes amid fears of despot Kim carrying out another nuclear test despite increasing pressure from US President Trump and ally China.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have reached boiling point in recent weeks, with President Trump ordering a military strike group, including aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, to the region

Last week, North Korea warned it would carry out a nuclear test “at any time and at any location” set by its leadership.

A spokesman for the North's foreign ministry said Pyongyang was "fully ready to respond to any option taken by the US".

The regime will continue bolstering its "pre-emptive nuclear attack" capabilities unless Washington scrapped its hostile policies, he said in a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency.

Kim also showed off his arsenal of heavy artillery with a terrifying display in the biggest military drill in North Korean history last week.

New satellite images from Kim Jong Un’s North Korea showed the communist country’s nuclear site at Punggye-ri is “primed and ready” for a new nuclear test, the Washington-based think tank 38 North reported Wednesday.

The images reportedly showed North Korea preparing to detonate a nuclear bomb to coincide with its national day, the “Day of the Sun” on Saturday. According to 38 North, the images showed “unusually high levels of activity” at the site over the past four weeks.

The satellite imagery from April 2 showed an increased level of activity around the site’s “North Portal,” or the tunnel where the country’s four most recent nuclear tests have taken place. And according to 38 North, aerial photos taken Wednesday showed continued activity at the nuclear site.

Other activities that seemed to indicate that the nuclear site was preparing for another test included increased personnel activity around the command center area located at the compound.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday that it was possible that Pyongyang might have the ability to deliver missiles equipped with weapons of mass destruction — specifically, chemical weapons like those recently used in Syria.

“There is a possibility that North Korea already has a capability to deliver missiles with sarin (nerve gas) as warheads,” Abe told a parliamentary session, according to Reuters.

North Korea’s most important national day — its “Day of the Sun” — is on Saturday, April 15, when North Korea celebrates the birthday of its founding president Kim Il Sung. According to Reuters, North Korean leaders have used the date for major weapons test in the past.

The country’s current ruler, Kim Jong Un, has hinted that he had something big planned for the day, but another missile firing, like Pyongyang launched earlier this month, or a nuclear test could be a mistake of epic proportions: President Donald Trump has unequivocally told Kim not to perform any more tests and he has urged China to work to keep the dictator in check.

After Trump’s recent muscle-flexing in Syria, Kim would be wise to back down.

North Korea has recently conducted engine tests for an intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially deliver a nuclear warhead to the United States, a U.S. think tank said on Friday.North Korea conducted at least one engine test for the KN-08 missile in late March or early April, the think tank 38 North said, marking the latest in a series of tests for a missile believed to have a range of more than 6,000 miles.
Following the engine tests, the next stage for North Korea would be a test launch of the missile, according to 38 North, which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University's U.S.-Korea Institute.
"As this effort progresses, the next technically logical step in the missile's development would be a flight test of the entire system," 38 North said in its report.
Commercial satellite imagery indicates movement and removal of missile stages and fuel tanks as well as changes in the flame trench that point to North Korea having conducted one or more tests in the two-week period from March 22, the report said.
South Korea's defense ministry declined to confirm the specifics of the report citing intelligence policy but said a long-range missile launch by the North could not be ruled out.
"It's not easy to conduct a long-range rocket launch right after a engine test but they may have had other things prepared," ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said.
North Korea is believed to be developing on a nuclear weapon and the technology to miniaturize a warhead to mount it on a long-range missile.
In December 2012 it launched a long-range rocket that successfully put an object into space orbit and in February last year conducted a third nuclear test.
The report on the engine testing comes a week after the think tank reported heightened activities at the North's nuclear test site at Punggye-ri, indicating it was ready to conduct a fourth nuclear test.
A South Korean government official said preparations for a nuclear test at Punggye-ri appeared to be complete, including the sealing of tunnels dug into mountain range, and all that remained was for the North's leader Kim Jong Un to order it.
Since 2006, the United Nations has imposed sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear and missile tests, but the North has pushed ahead with further tests, even disregarding warnings from its sole major ally, China.
On Friday, the North's official media carried a report that showed Kim Jong Un had replaced his top military aide, naming confidant Hwang Pyong as the new army political chief.
Hwang replaced Choe Ryong Hae, who was rumored to be in bad health. Choe is the son of a revolutionary fighter who worked with state founder Kim Il Sung.
Hwang was previously deputy director of the ruling Workers' Party's powerful Organizational Guidance Department.
The post of the director of the Korean People's Army's General Political Department is seen as the highest position in the North's 1.2-million strong army.
Analysts doubted whether the appointment would significantly impact Kim's grip on power. But, some said it may reflect the discomfort of a young leader, with no military experience, at having Choe in such a prominent post.
