Report: Italy Will File Murder Claim if UK Won’t Release Alfie for Treatment in Rome

On the same day that a High Court in the United Kingdom ruled 23-month-old Alfie Evans must be taken off of life support, the country of Italy did a surprising and unprecedented thing — it gave the comatose toddler citizenship.
Now, the country says it will file a murder claim against officials in the United Kingdom if Evans isn’t released to Rome for treatment.
For those of you who haven’t been following the heartbreaking saga, here are the basics: Evans has been in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder which requires him to be on a ventilator.
In a move with shades of the Charlie Gard case, medical officials in the U.K.’s socialized health care system decided they wanted to pull the child’s life support without the permission of the parents, Tom Evans and Katie James.

According to the U.K. Telegraph, Evans took his appeal to Pope Francis, telling the pontiff “every sick person may always be respected in their dignity and cared for in an appropriate way for their condition… and with great respect for life.”
On the same day that the High Court ruled that Evans didn’t have a case and hospital administrators could pull his life support — and with 200 angry protesters outside of the hospital — Italy announced it had made Evans a citizen.
“Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano and Interior Minister Marco Minniti have granted citizenship to little Alfie. The Italian government hopes that being Italian will allow the immediate transfer of the child to Italy,” a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry read.
The Italian government hopes that Alfie Evans can quickly be transferred to Bambino Gesu hospital in Rome, an institution run by the Vatican. And if the United Kingdom tries to block the move, things could get very ugly very fast.
“If you remove the ventilator from Alfie Evans, we will file a complaint against you for the murder of an Italian citizen,” a statement from the Italian Embassy in London read, according to Matteo Matzuzzi, a Rome-based journalist for Italian newspaper, Il Foglio.
As the BBC reported Monday, Alder Hey hospital “has argued that keeping him on a ventilator is not in ‘his best interests’ and any further treatment was not only ‘futile’ but also ‘unkind and inhumane.'”
The U.K. seems to have become the arbiter of who lives and who dies when it comes to young children, what with the Alfie Evans case and the Charlie Gard debacle.
While one understands there are complex bioethical issues at stake here, the fact that these children are essentially being left to die against the will of their parents should be a chilling portent of where socialized medicine is going.

When Charlie Gard died, there were plenty of people who were willing to stand up and say it was murder. None of them, however, were internationally-recognized states. Italy is, and that changes everything.
Now, the United Kingdom and the people at the NHS have to decide whether they want to end the life of a citizen of another country — and risk getting into an unprecedented international legal battle.
In the meantime, the Italians have just become heroes to people all over the world who believe that a child’s life has inherent value and that the wishes of the parents should be respected. At least there are some people left in Europe who believe in the dignity of the human being.

British Authorities Crack Down On Nazi Dogs And Angry Drivers While Forcing Parents To Watch Their Baby Die

Over the past several weeks, we’ve finally seen what the law enforcement priorities of British police look like. We’ve found out that they will simply not stand comedians training their girlfriend’s pugs to make Nazi salutes for YouTube LOLs — that vicious act of cruelty comes along with an £800 fine from the British government. At least he didn’t end up in prison. We also know that flipping off a mobile safety camera while fitted with a laser jammer is punishable in the UK by eight months in prison. And, of course, we know that carrying a spork in the UK is criminal activity as well.
Leaving a baby to die — well, that’s another story.
Two-year-old Alfie Evans, who suffers from an undiagnosed brain condition that has left him in a semi-vegetative state, has been ordered removed from life support by the British government over the wishes of his parents. His parents simply wanted to move him to Italy to pursue palliative measures, but the British court ruled that wouldn’t be in Alfie’s best interest, and ordered that his parents watch him die. Instead of dying, however, Alfie continued to breath on his own for 15 hours after being disconnected from life support. Pope Francis tweeted in support:
The British government placed 30 officers around the hospital to prevent protesters from attempting to move the baby.
This marks the second time in recent months that the British government has enforced the death of a child above the wishes of the parents — baby Charlie Gard's parents were refused the ability to move their child out of the country for treatment, with the hospital arguing that he should die instead.
So they’ve got their priorities straight.
Meanwhile, the British police have been enmeshed in scandal as a Newcastle rape gang comprised of Muslim men was left to its own devices while the authorities reportedly “appeared to punish victims,” according to The Independent (UK). According to that outlet:
Grooming gangs abused more than 700 women and girls around Newcastle with “arrogant persistence” after police appeared to punish victims while letting the perpetrators walk free, a case review has found. The report into the response by authorities to child sexual exploitation found that before a large-scale police operation was launched in 2014, officers’ actions were sending an “unhelpful” message to perpetrators. …. Investigators said the abuse could not be stopped without work to understand the profiles, motivations and cultural influences of perpetrators, after finding similarities with grooming in Rotherham, Rochdale and Oxford.
Europe is in serious trouble. And that trouble is self-imposed. We may be watching the end of the Judeo-Christian morality that protected children and women, increasingly supplanted by the new morality of bureaucratic rule from above — a rule concerned mostly with quashing dissent and treating citizens as subjects.

Update: UK Docs Make Sick Move After Surgeon Says Charlie Gard Can Live

Terminally ill United Kingdom baby Charlie Gard has been fighting for his life, while his parents and supporters fight for their right to care for him, but those who oppose him receiving treatment have been adamant.
Now that an American neurosurgeon who examined the boy is siding with the parents, and a hearing on the case turned bitterly emotional Friday, the dispute is getting even hotter.
Dr. Michio Hirano examined Charlie, who suffers from a rare genetic condition called mitochondrial depletion syndrome, and determined that experimental therapy could possibly save the baby’s life.

However, British doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital were “unconvinced” by Hirano’s assessment and disagreed with his finding that Charlie’s brain damage was not irreversible, according to the U.K. Telegraph.
The hospital continued its argument that the infant should be allowed to “die with dignity,” the Telegraph reported.
Hirano and hospital officials spent five hours discussing the situation and their differing opinions on the child’s potential for life-saving treatment.

A source close to the parents said the family was “optimistic” following Hirano’s examination, according to Ave Maria Radio, a Catholic broadcasting outlet.
However, at a hearing on Friday, doctors unveiled a new set of brain scans for the little boy, that appeared to show his condition was even poorer than thought.
A lawyer for the hospital, Katie Gollop, broke out the new results during the hearing, before Charlie’s parents even had a chance to read them.
“Almost all the medical evidence in this case makes for sad reading,” Gollop said, according to Sky News.

Charlie’s parents did not react well to the news.
“We haven’t even read it,” Yates said before she stormed from the courtroom, according to Sky News.
The boy’s father, Chris Gard, looked directly at the lawyer and said “evil,” before he too left the room, Sky News reported.
A judge’s ruling in the case is due July 25.
The British doctors have been adamant, standing by a statement issued July 13 that amounts to a death sentence for the 11-month-old boy:
“It has been and remains the unanimous view of all those caring for Charlie at Great Ormond Street that withdrawal of ventilation and palliative care are all that the hospital can offer him consistent with his welfare,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has offered to help Charlie, and a U.S. hospital also offered to provide treatment at no charge.
This baby has a right to his life, which includes allowing him to receive the best medical treatment available — if that what his parents desire. By standing in the way of that, these hospital and court officials have shown just how little they value life and family autonomy.

While the liberal media likes to paint President Donald Trump as cold and heartless, on multiple occasion throughout his time in office he has shown that he has a heart and cares deeply about other people — especially children.
The latest instance of Trump showing his softer side involves the case Charlie Gard, a baby in England who was born with a rare genetic condition that makes it unlikely he will live very long, Independent Journal Reviewreported.
On Monday, Trump tweeted that he would be “delighted” to help out in any way possible. The parents of the little boy have lost multiple court cases and now they face the real possibility that the hospital Gard is in could pull life support for their child — even though they don’t want that to happen.

“If we can help little Charlie Gard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so,” Trump wrote in his tweet.
Trump’s comments revolve around a key part of the case. There is an experimental treatment in the United States that could help Gard, but Europe is refusing to let his parents actually bring him over here.

The parents of Gard, Chris and Connie Gard, quickly seized on Trump’s comments and stated that they would continue to fight to save their child — especially now that the pope and the president of the United States were on their side. On Wednesday, a pediatric hospital in Rome owned by the Vatican offered to take over the child’s care, according to CNN.
“If he’s still fighting, we’re still fighting,” they wrote in a Facebook post that included a link to Trump’s tweet.
The U.K. Daily Mail reported that in a statement, the parents of Gard stated that they were “overwhelmed” by the support that Trump had shown them.
“Chris and Connie are overwhelmed with emotion that President Trump and the Pope have spoken publicly of their support,” the statement read.

On Twitter, the approvals poured out:
Fox News reported that British Prime Minister Theresa May didn’t rule out the possibility that Gard could be moved to the United States on Wednesday, but she didn’t seem to indicate she would intervene either.
“I am confident that Great Ormond Street Hospital have and always will consider any offers or new information that has come forward with consideration of the well-being of a desperate ill child,” she said while adding that doctors often make “heartbreaking decisions” in cases like this one.
While Trump’s willingness to help the boy is admirable, it is unclear if there is much he can do to actually get Gard over to the United States for the treatment. If Britain won’t let Gard leave the country, there isn’t much Trump can do to force their hand.
