Weirdos Find A New Place To Do Their Trade. It's Close To Home.

violenceHave violent sexual offenders and serial killers found a non-violent outlet for their psychopathy?
A recent study suggests that Internet trolls could be the same type of people who, before the Internet age, would have taken their aggression out in a way that is physically violent and harmful to others.
“In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community … either accidentally or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response,” explains Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that has had to battle its own trolls.
This month’s issue of Personality and Individual Differences published the results of the “Trolls Just Want to Have Fun” study in which more than 1,200 people participated. The study tested the personality traits of Internet trolls and compared them to the population at large.
Researchers Erin E. Buckels, Paul D. Trapnell and Delroy L. Paulhus of the University of Manitoba made up the team that conducted the study. They wanted to determine whether or not those who troll have common “noxious” personality traits and, specifically, whether they fit into the “Dark Tetrad” – the Machiavellian personality combination that is found to lead to antisocial behaviors such as psychosis, narcissism, sadism and psychopathy.

Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy) and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others) were the measured traits that theorists believe define the “Dark Tetrad.”
The researchers identified “trolls” by asking a series of questions to find what activity they enjoy the most when they are online. They were then given options like “chatting with others,” “debating issues that are important,” “making new friends,” “trolling others” and a general “other.”
Trolls self-identified as those who like “trolling others” online better than other Internet activities.
The study found that trolls enjoy the sheer disruption of injecting their grief into other peoples’ discussions for the sadistic pleasure (or “lulz” in Internet slang) of it. Trolls were given a composite score that researchers named the Global Assessment of Internet Trolling, or GAIT, based on their responses to these four items:
“I have sent people to shock websites for the lulz.”
“I like to troll people in forums or the comments section of websites.”
“I enjoy griefing [annoying] other players in multiplayer games.”
“The more beautiful and pure a thing is, the more satisfying it is to corrupt.”
The research found that the higher the participant’s GAIT score, the more likely they were to identify with all four areas of the “Dark Tetrad,” but most strongly, sadism.
Some sadists find an outlet on the Internet since the behavior is considered socially unacceptable in other arenas. Thus, the disease model feeds itself as the only acceptable place to conduct covert activity and, simultaneously, the Pavlovian rush is addictive for the sadistic troll – especially when they elicit a response from a reader.
The problem of trolls has become a major issue for sites that are forced to hire full-time monitors to sift through the trolls’ injections. Trolls often take much joy in disruption have found ways to overwhelm even the savviest of websites.
Major national news sites are increasingly eliminating their comment sections due to troll comments. Chicago Sun-Times and Popular Science both removed their comments sections and indicated it was in response to trolling.
Sadism is considered a common criminal trait, particularly in those who cause bodily harm to others, like sexual offenders and serial killers. So the implications are intriguing to researchers. They ask: If those with sadistic tendencies can get their satisfaction via internet cruelty, might they be less likely to act out socially?
Participants in the study admitted not only to sadistic activity, such as sending people to shocking sites or upsetting the flow, they admitted that the more pure and beautiful something is (such as a site dedicated to an inspiring story about a child), the more satisfaction they get from corrupting it – which is also considered a common thinking pattern among child rapists and murderers.
Participants also disclosed another point: They would rather act out and get their sadistic satisfaction on the Internet, where they get in less trouble for it than they would if they did so publicly.
Violent crime rates are down in the U.S. for the fifth straight year. Some wonder if that trend could be a result of those with the “Dark Tetrad” personality having a new, effective outlet in their online activities.
The activities of the trolls are not always harmless, even when they are anonymous. Suicides and other emotional traumas have been linked to trolls, especially in situations involving already emotionally vulnerable bloggers or commenters.
Most abusers online are males, and most of those trolled are female.

Obama--The Man Who Loved Himself!

From Conservative Tribune:

Is This Obama’s Most Delusional, Narcissistic Statement EVER? [READ]

This ludicrous and delusional statement comes from a President Obama with a negativeapproval rating. More and more Americans are forsaking confidence in his discredited and failed administration.
Yesterday in his remarks at the annual Congressional Black Caucus dinner, President Obama submitted an incredibly insane and obvious display of his obsession with himself. He evidently thoroughly enjoys his cult of personality with barely a twinge of humility.
Obama went on to say that he appreciates people’s prayers, but that they’re really not effective unless accompanied by actions like voting. He then immediately attacked sensible voter ID laws designed to protect the integrity of our American elections system by fraud and abuse.
That issue has nothing to do with race, nor even partisanship, despite Obama and the left’s attempt to characterize it as such. It’s a simple question of making sure the law is followed when exercising the privilege of choosing one’s elected leaders.
But Obama and his followers are so obsessed with their own grandeur, and the greatness of their Dear Leader that they are blinded by their own arrogance and sense of entitlement and self-importance.
This narcissism expresses itself in other ways. Democrats are panicking about losing they U.S. Senate (as well they should). Many of them refuse to campaign with Obama because of his rampant and growing unpopularity. Yet you don’t see Obama embarrassed or setting about to change his ways.
Narcissism is also related to no apologies for Obama’s broken campaign promises. These include failing to secure the southern border and bombing Iraq despite his harsh criticism of President Bush’s efforts there.

No Wonder Obama Takes So Many Selfies--Its Narcissism!

Scientists Link Selfies To Narcissism, Addiction & Mental Illness

The growing trend of taking smartphone selfies is linked to mental health conditions that focus on a person’s obsession with looks.

According to psychiatrist Dr David Veal: “Two out of three of all the patients who come to see me with Body Dysmorphic Disorder since the rise of camera phones have a compulsion to repeatedly take and post selfies on social media sites.”

“Cognitive behavioural therapy is used to help a patient to recognise the reasons for his or her compulsive behaviour and then to learn how to moderate it,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

A British male teenager tried to commit suicide after he failed to take the perfect selfie. Danny Bowman became so obsessed with capturing the perfect shot that he spent 10 hours a day taking up to 200 selfies. The 19-year-old lost nearly 30 pounds, dropped out of school and did not leave the house for six months in his quest to get the right picture. He would take 10 pictures immediately after waking up. Frustrated at his attempts to take the one image he wanted, Bowman eventually tried to take his own life by overdosing, but was saved by his mom.

“I was constantly in search of taking the perfect selfie and when I realized I couldn’t, I wanted to die. I lost my friends, my education, my health and almost my life,” he told The Mirror.

The teenager is believed to be the UK’s first selfie addict and has had therapy to treat his technology addiction as well as OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Part of his treatment at the Maudsley Hospital in London included taking away his iPhone for intervals of 10 minutes, which increased to 30 minutes and then an hour.

“It was excruciating to begin with but I knew I had to do it if I wanted to go on living,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

Public health officials in the UK announced that addiction to social media such as Facebook and Twitter is an illness and more than 100 patients sought treatment every year.

Selfies frequently trigger perceptions of self-indulgence or attention-seeking social dependence that raises the damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don’t spectre of either narcissism or very low self-esteem,” said Pamela Rutledge in Psychology Today.

The big problem with the rise of digital narcissism is that it puts enormous pressure on people to achieve unfeasible goals, without making them hungrier. Wanting to be Beyoncé, Jay Z or a model is hard enough already, but when you are not prepared to work hard to achieve it, you are better off just lowering your aspirations. Few things are more self-destructive than a combination of high entitlement and a lazy work ethic. Ultimately, online manifestations of narcissism may be little more than a self-presentational strategy to compensate for a very low and fragile self-esteem. Yet when these efforts are reinforced and rewarded by others, they perpetuate the distortion of reality and consolidate narcissistic delusions.

The addiction to selfies has also alarmed health professionals in Thailand. “To pay close attention to published photos, controlling who sees or who likes or comments them, hoping to reach the greatest number of likes is a symptom that ‘selfies’ are causing problems,” said Panpimol Wipulakorn, of the Thai Mental Health Department.

The doctor believed that behaviours could generate brain problems in the future, especially those related to lack of confidence.

The word “selfie” was elected “Word of the Year 2013″ by the Oxford English Dictionary. It is defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website”.
