This Is Our Future?

'What is this, a military state now?': NYC residents annoyed at 'Orwellian' cops monitoring their every move on sunny day at public parks

New York City, hardest hit by COVID-19 in the United States, hasn't caught many breaks lately.

But it finally got one over the weekend: warm weather.
In fact, Saturday the mercury climbed into the 70s — the warmest day in the city since March 20, the New York Post reported.
Which meant that a lot of New Yorkers headed outside, went for walks, played sports, and gathered at parks. And more than 1,000 New York City police officers were right there with them, too, making sure they abided by social distancing rules, the paper said.

What are the details?

And the sight of the NYPD didn't sit too well with everybody.
"It's Orwellian to be watched like this," one 36-year-old told the Post as she took in the sunshine at Staten Island's Clove Lakes Park.
"It's friggin' nuts," she also remarked to the paper regarding the influx of patrol cars, park police officers, and bike cops with video camera-equipped helmets equipped.

"It's like something out of '1984,'" the woman added to the Post, yet another reference to George Orwell's oft-mentioned novel about totalitarianism. "What is this, a military state now?"
The paper said thousands gathered at Central Park to sunbathe and have picnics, and while few wore masks, the groups and individuals kept the required six feet away from each other.
"I walk out of my building [in Chinatown], and I have a cop telling me it's illegal for me to not wear a face mask outside," Malcolm Brown, 26, recounted to the Post, adding that when he "started to really pay attention" he noticed "dozens of police vans everywhere. It's an overwhelming feeling. I understand they are keeping us safe, but do we really want to become China, where they're recording you when you come out of your building?"

Witnesses noted to the paper they saw an unusually large law enforcement mobilization at tiny Silver Lake Park in Staten Island: two foot patrol officers, a pair of squad cars, one undercover car, one uniform state Department of Environmental Conservation car, and a Parks Department vehicle.
At Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, the Post said cops got busy when soccer players created makeshift goals with sneakers — as such an object in an organized game draws too much close contact.
"Gentlemen, gentlemen," one officer told the players, the paper said. "Bring it in, bring it in. Break it up. You can kick the ball back and forth, but these goal posts, they have to go, Okay?"
While the group dispersed as requested, one player called out, "I mean, we wanted to play. It's nice outside," the Post said.
Carlos Eduardo, 56, was trying to relax nearby, the paper reported, and found it difficult with so many officers around.
"I don't want to be watched so much," he told the Post, adding that "in the house it's like jail. I don't want to come to the park and feel like I'm in jail."
Eduardo added a zinger, the paper said: "We're all going to die of something."

What did police have to say?

NYPD has made 60 arrests and handed out 343 summonses since March 16 related to social distancing issues, the Post said.
"The public should expect to see social distancing patrol officers on foot, on bikes, and in vehicles ensuring that social distancing procedures are followed," NYPD spokeswoman Sgt. Jessica McRorie added to the paper.

What did the governor have to say?

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo told New Yorkers to "go for a walk, but respect the social distancing and wear a mask," adding that he's told officers all over the state to "enforce the mask executive order," the Post said.
Cuomo also wasn't happy with those who didn't wear masks during protests Friday while calling for the state to reopen, the paper said.
"It's reckless, it's irresponsible, and it's not about your life. It's about other people's lives," he said.

DeBlasio Is A Hateful Emblem -- Does He Represent Democratic View Of Jews?

Targeting the Jews: De Blasio Seems to Think He’s Mayor of 1930s-era Berlin

First Liberty Institute, one of the nation's top religious liberty law firms, issued a strong condemnation of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's targeting of the Jewish community.
De Blasio rushed to the scene of a rabbi's funeral and ordered police to break up a massive gathering of Orthodox Jews, the New York Post reported.
The mayor instructed police to make arrests if necessary - even though organizers of the funeral said they had received approval from City Hall to hold the gathering.
“My message to the Jewish community, and all communities, is this simple: the time for warnings has passed,” the mayor wrote on Twitter. “I have instructed the NYPD to proceed immediately to summons or even arrest those who gather in large groups. This is about stopping this disease and saving lives. Period.”
First Liberty Institute president Kelly Shackelford called the mayor's actions "outrageous, vile and dangerous."
"His words condemning an entire religious community during a time of extreme stress and tension invites division and hostility, not unity.  We strongly condemn Mayor de Blasio for his harmful words," Shackelford said. "First Liberty Institute will represent, for free, any member of the NYPD who is punished by the Mayor’s office for refusing to follow Mayor de Blasio’s unlawful and immoral order.”
Someone should tell Mayor de Blasio that he’s the mayor of New York City, not 1930’s Berlin.
“Something absolutely unacceptable happened in Williamsburg tonite: a large funeral gathering in the middle of this pandemic,” de Blasio wrote on Twitter. “When I heard, I went there myself to ensure the crowd was dispersed. And what I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus."
The NYPD did not report any arrests nor were any of the Jews slapped with summonses, the New York Post reported.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) blasted the mayor’s attack on Jews.
“Would DeBlasio have sent this identical tweet with the word ‘Jewish’ replaced by any other religious minority? If not, why not? Laws should be enforced neutrally w/o targeting religious faith. #ProtectFreeExercise,” he tweeted.
The mayor's behavior is beyond appalling and it smacks of anti-Semitism.
I hope every Catholic and Protestant in New York City will rise up in defiance of this godless tyrant and stand alongside their Jewish neighbors.
We cannot and we must not tolerate anti-Semitism – especially at City Hall.

As More Information Comes Out, Apparently COVID-19 Has Infected More Than Suspected While At Lower Death Rate

Antibody study finds 21% of New York City residents has had COVID-19

Nearly 2 million NYCers could've gotten the virus

New York City may have had nearly 2 million cases of COVID-19, according to an antibody study that revealed that 21% of tested NYC residents has had the virus, according to the New York Times.

The information comes from testing done on 1,300 supermarket shoppers in New York City this week, and the results were announced Thursday by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
"What does it mean? I don't know," Cuomo said during his daily press briefing. "These are people who were out and about shopping. They were not people who were in their homes, they were not people who were isolated, they were not people who were quarantined."
The numbers: The study had a sample size of 1,300 people in New York City. Of those, 21% tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies. If that percentage held true through the entire population, that would amount to approximately 1.7 million cases — far more than the current count.

The statewide study tested 3,000 people total in the state, and the percentage of people in that sample that tested positive was 14%, which would amount to 2.6 million cases if applied to the entire population. The current number of total cases in New York is about 250,000.
If those numbers are accurate, the infection mortality rate in New York would be about 0.5% Cuomo said.
Are the numbers reliable? Some experts have reservations about the accuracy of antibody tests right now, including Dr. Demetre C. Daskalakis, one of NYC's top disease control officials. From NYT:
Hours before Mr. Cuomo's presentation, a top New York City health official cautioned against making too much of the usefulness of the test results in making critical decisions about social distancing and reopening the economy, particularly in identifying immunity.

The city's top disease control officials, Dr. Demetre C. Daskalakis, wrote in an email alert on Wednesday that the tests "may produce false negative or false positive results," pointing to "significant voids" in using the science to pinpoint immunity.

Antifa Strikes Again! Promises To Not Stop

VANDALS HIT NYC GOP HEADQUARTERS: ‘ATTACK IS MERELY A BEGINNING’

Kerry Picket | Reporter
The Metropolitan Republican Club on Manhattan’s Upper East Side was vandalized Thursday night with broken windows, spray-painted anarchy signs, and a threatening message that the “attack is merely a beginning.”
The building is the headquarters of the Manhattan Republican Party and the New York City regional office for the New York Republican Party.

The note reads:
Tonight, we put the Republican Party on notice, in defiance to the policy of mass misery they have championed.
The U.S. government has established concentration camps around the country for Latino people, shamelessly murdering black people, and continues its war machine that has slaughtered Muslim people with impunity for decades. The so-called “Land of the Free” leads the world in incarceration rates per capita, all the while profiteering in the new plantation within the prison walls.
While these atrocities persist unabated the Metropolitan Republican Club chose to invite a hipster fascist clown to dance for them, content to revel in their treachery against humanity. The Republican Party joined by their spineless partners in crime, the Democrats institute a policy of domestic and foreign terror felt the world over.
Our attack is merely a beginning. We are not passive, we are not civil, and we will not apologize. Those of good conscience and clear mind know this state of oppression cannot remain. The US fascist political system is one of the most savage institutions in history and we will combat it relentlessly until all are free of American barbarism.
The term “hipster fascist clown” appeared to reference Vice Media co-founder and CRTV host Gavin McInnes, who was expected to speak Friday at the club. McInnes says he stands up for “Western values,” and is the founder of a fraternal group called the Proud Boys, where men who believe the “West is best” meet up and drink beer.
The attack happened just weeks after vandals spray-painted an Illinois Republican Party office in Winnebago County with the words “rape” and “shame” on the building, Fox Newsreported.
Antifa groups have amped up their activity in the past few months, which include attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), motorists, and residents in Portland, Oregon. (RELATED: Here Are All Of The Times Antifa Got Violent In One Weekend)

“Last night the Metropolitan Republican Club was vandalized by the leftist hate group Antifa, who also left a note promising ‘this is just the beginning’ and threatening more violence,” the Met Club said in a statement on Twitter. “Republicans are a minority party in NYC by a wide margin, and while most city residents are respectful of our activities, our grassroots actions are often met with hostility. Last night’s shameful attack by Antifa cowards represents a tragic new low.”
“Sadly this is only the most recent example of leftist violence and aggression against the Conservative Movement,” the statement continued. “But rest assured that we will not be intimidated by violence, threats, or hate speech. We will continue to fight for freedom of speech and liberty here in New York City and all across this great nation.”
New York Republican Chairman Ed Cox and Manhattan GOP Chairwoman A.J. Catsimatidis were expected to condemn the vandalism, call on Democrats to stop inciting these attacks, and urge civility at a press conference Friday at 2 p.m. in front of the Metropolitan Republican Club in Manhattan.

New Yorker Article Only Encouraged Normal People To Flood Chick-Fil-A New Location

NYC Crowds Flood Into Chick-fil-A Despite Attempt To Label Christian Chain as ‘Creepy’

 Print
Chick-fil-A’s largest location in the world opened in lower Manhattan last month, and though New Yorker Magazine labeled the chain as “creepy,” it is thriving in the city.
New Yorker’s Dan Piepenbring wrote a piece last week titled, “Chick-fil-A’s Creepy Infiltration of New York City,” in which he bemoaned that the Christian-run chain now has four locations in the Big Apple.
He recounted with a sense of nostalgic glee in 2015 there were protests marking the opening of its first location in the city.
Piepenbring then pointed out when Chick-fil-A opened another restaurant in Queens in 2016, Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed a boycott to protest CEO Dan Cathy’s past statements in opposition to same-sex marriage and the company’s charitable foundation’s support of pro-traditional values political groups.
However, the reporter lamented, the company’s newest location launched with great fanfare, and “New York has taken to Chick-fil-A.”
“One of the Manhattan locations estimates that it sells a sandwich every six seconds, and the company has announced plans to open as many as a dozen more storefronts in the city,” he wrote.

Happening now at a 'creepy' @ChickfilA location in midtown NYC. Guess everyone forgot to read that article in this week's @NewYorker 🤷🏾‍♂️🙅🏽‍♂️

On Friday, a customer tweeted a picture directly to the New Yorker Magazine, showing a long line of people waiting to place their orders.

“Happening now at a ‘creepy’ @ChickfilA location in midtown NYC. Guess everyone forgot to read that article in this week’s @NewYorker,” he quipped.
What Piepenbring appears to find the most “creepy” about Chick-fil-A is its Christian corporate environment.
He reported, “The restaurant’s corporate purpose still begins with the words ‘to glorify God,’ and that proselytism thrums below the surface of the Fulton Street restaurant (in Lower Manhattan), which has the ersatz homespun ambiance of a megachurch.”
Piepenbring contended that the company’s anti-LGBT bigotry is still present, but just more subtle now.
In July 2012, as the controversy regarding Chick-fil-A was reaching a crescendo, the companyannounced, “Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.”

“The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender,” the statement added.
The company affirmed it would continue to operate applying “biblically-based principles” as it had since its founding, including “closing on Sundays, operating debt-free and devoting a percentage of our profits back to our communities.”
John Sweeney, writing for The Federalist, observed Piepenbring’s entire article appears aimed at stirring up old animosities some felt toward the company.
He explained: “Dan, like so many progressive writers before him, continues to search for controversy in Chick-fil-A’s Christian message. They are collectively becoming the boy who cried bigot.”
What do you think?
