New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed a bill into law that has the possibility to allow lawmakers on Capitol Hill to have access to President Trump's state tax returns.

According to Fox News:

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Monday that could allow lawmakers on Capitol Hill to obtain President Trump’s state tax returns, in what has been described as a "workaround" after failed efforts by House Democrats to get the president's federal returns.

Previously, state tax returns had to remain private with an exception for law enforcement. The new bill -- which could face a legal challenge in the future -- adds an exception that says the state’s Commissioner of the Department of Taxation and Finance has to turn over information requested by the head of the House Ways and Means Committee, Senate Finance Committee, or Joint Committee on Taxation.

“Tax secrecy is paramount -- the exception being for bonafide investigative and law enforcement purposes," Cuomo said in a statement. "By amending the law enforcement exception in New York State tax code to include Congressional tax-related committees, this bill gives Congress the ability to fulfill its Constitutional responsibilities, strengthen our democratic system and ensure that no one is above the law.”

President Trump's legal team responded to the signing of the bill with a statement from attorney Jay Sekulow.

Sekulow stated that this was presidential harassment and that the legal team will fight it.

The legislation will require certification from the requesting committee chair that there is a legitimate legislative purpose and that they have already attempted to get the federal returns from the Treasury Department.

NYT Eats Crow After Trump Tax Return Proves Major Story Wrong

The White House released President Trump’s tax return from 2005 on Tuesday, which showed that he paid $38 million on $150 million in income. This disproves the premise of a major New York Times story in the lead-up to the November election.

The Oct. 1 Times story was headlined: “Donald Trump Tax Records Show He Could Have Avoided Taxes for Nearly Two Decades, The Times Found.” The New York Times reporters wrote: “Donald J. Trump declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns, a tax deduction so substantial it could have allowed him to legally avoid paying any federal income taxes for up to 18 years, records obtained by The New York Times show.”

This report was so substantial that Trump was asked about it at a presidential debate and responded that he used tax deductions in order to not pay federal income taxes, but did not say for how many years.

The tax return released Tuesday shows that the most time Trump could have deducted money from his 1995 tax return to avoid paying taxes is nine years. This is half the amount of time the Times implied was the case.

President Trump has attacked the Times throughout his presidency as a “failing” paper and “fake news.”

Former U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Wednesday criticized Donald Trump for declining to release his tax returns, saying the only explanation was that the documents contained a "bombshell" about the real estate mogul.

"It is disqualifying for a modern-day presidential nominee to refuse to release tax returns to the voters," Romney said in a Facebook post about Trump, who became the likely Republican nominee when his rivals dropped out last week.
