We hear plenty about immigrants from Mexico and Central America trying to sneak through the southern border — but that doesn’t mean there isn’t illegal activity coming from up north.
Eleven Europeans were caught trying to make it through America’s northern border on Saturday. Seven Romanians and 4 French were apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Vermont.
The migrants are now awaiting removal proceedings.

Illegal immigrants from Europe caught

We don’t hear much about illegal crossings from Canada, but they do happen. Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 3,000 illegals who tried to cross from Canada in 2017, more than half of whom were Mexican nationals.
Most recently, a group of 11 Europeans, 7 Romanians, and 4 French nationals were caught by Border Patrol in Vermont over the weekend, according to a Tuesday statement issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
They illegally crossed the border in two cars that drove on a sideway adjacent to an international library in the early morning on Saturday.
The vehicles then wrapped around and merged with southbound traffic on Interstate 91.
Swanton Border Patrol Sector video cameras captured the two vehicles as they dashed over the border and onto the sidewalk.
Is Trump doing a good job enforcing immigration laws?

Law enforcement teams up

Border agents were notified that the vehicles were seen boarding the on-ramp for southbound traffic and stopped the vehicles after they made their exist five miles south at exit 27 in Newport, Vermont. They then apprehended the individuals after being tipped off by Law Enforcement Communication Assistants.
“The Law Enforcement Communications Assistants (LECA) at the Tactical Communications Center play a vital role in safeguarding America’s borders,” Newport Station Patrol Agent in Charge Richard Ross said. “They were able to quickly and accurately provide information to agents in the field, enabling them to locate the vehicles and make the apprehensions.”
Haskell Free Library, which serves citizens of both Quebec and Vermont, straddles the border between Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec. The library was built deliberately on the international border in 1904.

Immigratawait removal

Agents found 11 illegal immigrants, including children, in the two cars. Two French adults, two French children, four Romanian adults, and three Romanian children were arrested after admitting to not being U.S. citizens and not having papers.
All 11 were taken into custody by ICE and are now waiting to be deported. A similar incident involving five Romanians in a single vehicle took place last month.
Border Patrol reported 3,027 apprehensions at the northern border in 2017, compared to 303,916 at the southwestern border that same year.
Illegal crossings from the north might be dwarfed by those from the southwest, but they still happen, and they require no less vigilance to be prevented.
