President Donald Trump was mockingly dismissive of the Green New Deal, and joked that veteran Democratic lawmakers are "petrified" of freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), according to The Hill.
When did he say this? President Trump was speaking during the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner on Tuesday when he got on the topic of Ocasio-Cortez's controversial climate change resolution. No Democratic senator voted in favor of the resolution after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called it to a vote.
What did he say? "The Green New Deal, done by a young bartender, 29 years old. A young bartender, wonderful young woman," Trump said. "The Green New Deal. The first time I heard it I said, 'That's the craziest thing.' You have senators that are professionals that you guys know that have been there for a long time. White hair, everything perfect, and they're standing behind her shaking. They're petrified of her."
The Hill reported that Trump also said he didn't want to be too hard on the Green New Deal because he wanted to campaign against it later.
Anything else interesting? President Trump also took a shot a potential 2020 rival Joe Biden. He told a story of a time when a general gave him some good news. Such good news, Pres. Trump said, that he wanted to kiss the general. "I felt like Joe Biden," he joked.
Biden is the butt of many jokes, and the target of much criticism in recent days, as several women have made public statements about physical encounters with the former vice president that made them uncomfortable.
Two more women accused Biden of inappropriate touching Tuesday, although none of the accusers have claimed that they believed Biden had any ill intent with his actions.
"Only he knows his intent," writer D.J. Hill told The New York Times of a 2012 incident with Biden. "If something makes you feel uncomfortable, you have to feel able to say it."
