Want A Happy Marriage--See The Secrets!

FIVE SECRETS ABOUT WHAT MAKES A HAPPY MARRIAGE

What makes a happy marriage? It’s an age-old question that all married couples are forced to grapple with, especially when wedded bliss evaporates.
And it’s the very curiosity that author and researcher Shaunti Feldhahn explores in her recently released book, “The Surprising Secrets of Highly Happy Marriages.”
Feldhahn, who is in the midst of a multi-year research project about matrimony, has spent years collecting qualitative and quantitative information about what makes — and breaks — couples.

“A lot of what makes the happiest marriage is very, very simple stuff,” she told TheBlaze.
Through her work, Feldhahn noticed numerous patterns that kept popping up among the happy couples she interacted with — actions and activities that contributed to their elation.
“In our culture … you’re slated to view it as if you need to have a PhD in psychology to have a happy marriage and it’s all this complicated stuff — and it’s really not,” she said.
Feldhahn went on to share the five specific secrets that lead to wedded bliss — characteristics she noticed among the happiest of couples she spoke with.
1) Believing the Best in One Another: Among the most content of couples, Feldhahn found that a decision to believe the best in one another’s intentions — even when one spouse is emotionally hurt by another — is practically a prerequisite to a happy marriage.
“Happy couples would think, ‘That hurt but I know he loves me,’” Feldhahn said, rather than assuming that the husband or wife intentionally sought to inflict emotional pain.
2) Changing Attitudes: Feldhahn also said that couples who have the ability to snap themselves out of their frustrations with one another will also generally be happier. Changing their attitudes when they’re upset is key.
“These couple have completely learned to change their feelings. We think when we’re upset … our feelings are what they are,” she said. “Well, what these happy couples have done is, they’ve learned the trick. Most of the time there’s this action that they do where they talk themselves out of being mad — of having these negative feelings.”
3) The Little Things: Sometimes, the little things really do matter. Feldhahn said that she observed another pattern among the happiest of couples she’s surveyed and interviewed. Whether conscious or not, the couples figured out “a few little things” that make a big difference.
For example, a husband would report grabbing his wife’s hand while walking across a parking lot. Or he would put his arm around his wife, say “I love you” randomly — or place his hand on her knee while driving in the car. These touch points really resonated with women.
“These little things have this big impact on a day to day basis on making any man or any woman feel cared for,” she said.
“[Happy couples] don’t necessarily follow the advice to not go to bed mad.”
Share:
4) Reconnecting Well After Conflict: How couples handle conflict is also key.
“They don’t necessarily follow the advice to not go to bed mad,” she said, noting that it’s all about how the anger is dealt with before bed and what happens the next day.
Feldhahn also argued that men need more processing time than women, which means that talking contentious issues out before bed isn’t always the best option.
She continued, “The problem is, when you’ve got two tired, stressed, emotional people … you’re putting yourself in a position where someone’s going to say something hurtful or agree to something — and it doesn’t solve the problem [before bed].”
5) Be All In: In a culture that is characterized by talk of divorce and the failure of many marriages, some couples fear what could become of their unions and, as a result, they become guarded. But Feldhahn said that being “all in” is a key element in good marriages. The happiest couples reported being fully invested in their relationships.
“They risked getting their hearts hurt in order to commit to their marriage,” she said. “They never said the ‘d’ word [divorce] — and they fully committed, fully trusted — even at the risk of themselves. And what happened is they got back the marriage they were longing for.”
“They risked getting their hearts hurt in order to commit to their marriage.”

Feldhahn said that the couples that protected themselves and put up guards “introduced death into their marriages.”
The researcher has interviewed more than 1,000 couples, spending approximately $400,000 on data collection over the past 11 years.
“This nation needs a lot more hope about the institution of marriage,” Feldhahn told TheBlaze.
And its hope she’s trying to give through her research. Read more about “The Surprising Secrets of Highly Happy Marriages.”

Concerns Over Gay Marriage--Pros and Cons

5 MAJOR FEARS GAY MARRIAGE OPPONENTS HAVE ABOUT THE POTENTIAL NATIONWIDE LEGALIZATION OF SAME-SEX UNIONS

Debate over the Supreme Court’s gay marriage decisions on Wednesday continues, with activists optimistic, yet pledging to forge on toward full equality — and with those opposed voicing their disagreement with the sentiment behind the justices’ views on the matter.
Naturally, among many of those who are frustrated over the results, there’s the traditional, religious view coloring their persuasion. In America, this is predominately a Christian theological construct that sees marriage as an institution that is thousands of years old and that has always, exclusively, belonged to heterosexuals.
Largely, this is based on the Bible and critics generally point to the text and claim that it is patently outdated (supporters, obviously, reject such a notion).

In the wake of the court battles, there are some serious fears surrounding what could happen if full legalization takes hold. While some will embrace these ideals, others will certainly dub them absurd. Regardless, a debate about each element continues to unfold. Here are just five of the arguments against same-sex unions.
–

SLIPPERY SLOPE FEARS

One of the more common contentions relies upon the traditional paradigm of a relationship existing between one man and one woman. Considering that this has been the formulation for eons, gay marriage opponents hold that maintaining the status quo is essential. And here’s why: Changing the formula, in their view, opens the floodgates to any and all compositions of marriage.
While some advocates who support same-sex unions rebuff these fears, conservatives have questioned whether gay marriage legalization would also yield calls for polygamous weddings to also be legitimized. Indeed, some plural families are hoping that decriminalization of marriages that involve more that two adults will be advanced in the wake of the Supreme Court rulings.
So, to a degree, there is some legitimacy surrounding these fears — although there’s no indication that gay marriage would definitively yield other relationship forms. But some view this argument as patently ridiculous. Rolling Stone, for instance, dismissed this critique as sounding “eerily similar to the nonsensical arguments once made by racists about the dangers of interracial marriage.”
Regardless, Ryan T. Anderson, author of “What Is Marriage?: Man and Woman: A Defense,” has shared concerns about this issue. A fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, Anderson has written and researched extensively on the subject of same-sex marriage. Earlier this year, he penned an article delving into the slippery slope argument, among other issues.
Watch Anderson debate the Supreme Court decisions, below:
“If the law recognized same-sex couples as spouses, would some argue that it fails to respect the equality of citizens in multiple-partner relationships? Are those inclined to such relationships being treated unjustly when their consensual romantic bonds go unrecognized, their children thereby ‘stigmatized’ and their tax filings unprivileged?,” he asked.
Noting, based on a 2009 Newsweek article, that there are over 500,000 polyamorous households in the U.S., the ramifications, he argues, are paramount to consider. Using one of the common arguments that those supporting gay marriage tout, Anderson attempted to address critics of conservatives:
Supporters of redefinition use the following analogy: Laws defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman are unjust—fail to treat people equally—exactly like laws that prevented interracial marriage. Yet such appeals beg the question of what is essential to marriage. They assume exactly what is in dispute: that gender is as irrelevant as race in state recognition of marriage. However, race has nothing to with marriage, and racist laws kept the races apart. Marriage has everything to do with men and women, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers and children, and that is why principle-based policy has defined marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
Regardless, some would charge that affirming marriages between two consulting adults is an entirely different animal and that same-sex legalization would not pave the way to other formulations.

A THREAT TO RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

One of the more intriguing elements associated with the public’s shift in opinion on gay marriage is the extent to which perceptions have shifted. While traditional views were once par for the course, it seems they are now in the minority — at least statistically — when it comes to the same-sex marriage issue. Naturally, some are wondering how free speech and, in particular, religious liberty, will be impacted if gay marriage becomes the law of the land.
Churches — the majority of which oppose gay marriage and would not be willing to join same-sex couples in wedding ceremonies — are non-profit organizations, which means that they are registered as 501(c)(3) organizations with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Generally, churches are free to make their own decisions when it comes to employment and they are granted the right to hire and fire based on religious grounds (an exception when compared to other groups registered with the government).
But what happens if they refuse to perform marriages? For now, nothing. But some fear that the future trajectory could change the religious liberty dynamic.
Anderson explains:
Redefining marriage marginalizes those with traditional views and leads to the erosion of religious liberty. The law and culture will seek to eradicate such views through economic, social, and legal pressure. If marriage is redefined, believing what virtually every human society once believed about marriage—a union of a man and woman ordered to procreation and family life—would be seen increasingly as a malicious prejudice to be driven to the margins of culture. The consequences for religious believers are becoming apparent.
The administrative state may require those who contract with the government, receive governmental monies, or work directly for the state to embrace and promote same-sex marriage even if it violates their religious beliefs. Nondiscrimination law may make even private actors with no legal or financial ties to the government—including businesses and religious organizations—liable to civil suits for refusing to treat same-sex relationships as marriages. Finally, private actors in a culture that is now hostile to traditional views of marriage may discipline, fire, or deny professional certification to those who express support for traditional marriage.
Business owners, too, have encountered religious liberty issues. Take, for instance, the Oregon-based Sweet Cakes by Melissa, a Christian-operated bakery that refused to bake a cake for a lesbian wedding. Today, they are facing a battle with activists — one that could lead to the business’ closure.
Of course, there’s a difference between businesses and churches (at least legally) making these decisions, but the issue of religious liberty is, of course, at stake. Fear of the unknown certainly continues to keep religious liberty proponents on their toes, especially after the contraceptive mandate ended up creating such a furor among religiously-owned organizations.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOTHERS AND FATHERS

Gay marriage critics generally uphold the role of a mother and father in shaping a child’s life. In today’s world, though, with so many single-family households and with the divorce rate high, many families lack this structure. Nonetheless, Anderson, among his other arguments, believes that a marriage redefinition that included same-sex couples would further disassociate childbearing from marriage.
In the end, he believes this dynamic would hurt children.
“It would deny as a matter of policy the ideal that children need a mother and a father,” he wrote earlier this year. “Traditional marriage laws reinforce the idea that a married mother and father is the most appropriate environment for rearing children, as the best available social science suggests.”
Certainly, some would agree with Anderson, but then there are also people who argue that a loving home is all a child needs, regardless of the sex of the parents. His point, though, is that interchanging the importance of mothers and fathers and acting as though both are the same has some sociological pitfalls.

A man dressed as Jesus attends a rally celebrating the Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage, June 26, 2013 in West Hollywood California. The US Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a controversial federal law that defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman and also ruled that Proposition 8, California’s ban on gay marriage, could not be defended before the Supreme Court, paving the way for the resumption of gay marriages in California. Credit: AFP/Getty Images
There has been research in the past that corroborates this theory. Last year, as TheBlaze previously reported, a study published in the journal ”Social Science Research” tackled this very ideal, finding that there are, indeed, major differences worth noting. These purported discrepancies exist in the areas of social, emotional and relationship measures, Deseret News reported at the time.
The study, which is bound to be controversial, found lower reported income levels, poorer mental and physical health and more problematic romantic relationships, among adults who came from same-sex homes. Among 40 measures, there were 25 differences observed among this cohort when compared to kids who were raised in heterosexual households. Deseret continues:
The research does not address why the differences exist. It doesn’t predict if changing attitudes that are more accepting of same-sex relationships will mean that children growing up today with same-sex parents will one day fare better in similar analysis. It doesn’t address stigma or whether the difference is not the sexual preference of the parents but rather how stable the home life was, lead investigator Mark Regnerus, associate professor of sociology at University of Texas Austin’s Population Research Center, told the Deseret News.
“Nor does the study tell us that same-sex parents are necessarily bad parents,” he said in a written statement. “Rather, family forms that are associated with instability or non-biological parents tend to pose risks for children as they age into adulthood.”
His study does challenge long-held assertions that there are no outcome differences between children raised in intact biological families and those with same-sex parents.
The sample sizes in the aforementioned study, though, were small and could, thus, impact the results. And other studies have found the opposite — and that, on some indicators, same-sex couples’ children have experienced benefits from their households that exceed those of straight couples’ kids.
Plus, the American Psychological Association (APA) has rejected claims that children are impacted in negative ways by same-sex parents. The group argues that there is no difference between outcomes and success among children raised in gay households versus those brought up in straight homes.
“On the basis of a remarkably consistent body of research on lesbian and gay parents and their children, the American Psychological Association (APA) and other health professional and scientific organizations have concluded that there is no scientific evidence that parenting effectiveness is related to parental sexual orientation,” a statement reads on the group’s website. “That is, lesbian and gay parents are as likely as heterosexual parents to provide supportive and healthy environments for their children.”
Clearly, the debate continues on this front.

The Weakening of Marital Components
Anderson also argues that changing the marital formula to remove the essential male-female paradigm would also dislodge other important characteristics of healthy matrimony. He argues that, “Redefining marriage would weaken monogamy, exclusivity, and permanency—the norms through which marriage benefits society.”
Because same-sex marriage makes the opposite-sex formula optional, Anderson believes that the other aforementioned characteristics would also be treated in the same regard. He adds, “Weakening marital norms and severing the connection of marriage with responsible procreation are the admitted goals of many prominent advocates of redefining marriage.”
The notion, essentially, is that by dismantling the centerpiece of marriage (heterosexuality), all other elements would, in turn, be loosened and weakened.

God Will Punish Society
For many Americans who embrace Biblical values, acceptance of same-sex marriage as national law would be disastrous. Consider Family Research Council President Tony Perkins and his views on the two historic same-sex marriage rulings. This week, he said that the Supreme Court’s decisions show the nation’s lack of spirituality.
“The moral and spiritual blindness of our many of our nation’s top political leaders and judges is clearly stunning,” he said. “But we should not be surprised by this darkened understanding (Eph 4:18), it is the by-product of a people who have forgotten God.”

Perkins said that Christians should take issue with the nation’s “rejection of God’s revealed truth.” And he’s not alone. Many religious leaders believe that, as America continues to separate itself from the Lord by enacting laws that purportedly separate the republic from His teachings, the nation’s blessing will dwindle.
Critics of this theological worldview obviously believe that it is rooted in absurdity and that Jesus, as commentator Andrew Sullivan said this week, would actually weep in joy over the Supreme Court’s decisions.

Kids Destroy House-Parents Back Them

We are always amazed at today's parents who cannot believe their little darlings could ever do something bad. In the following story two kids destroy a house and their parents bring charges against the homeowner who caught the kids.

Years ago, parents would tell their kids, "if you get in trouble, it won't be half as bad as when you get home." Now, parents blindly follow what their kids say.

My suggestion for Jessee Daniels is to bring charges against the parents for failing to supervise their kids and to ask for damages for the house and for them bringing charges against him.  These parents must be taught a lesson. Eight and ten year olds do cause damage and their parents must step up when it occurs.  Otherwise, we will read about these same kids in eight to ten years, killing someone. Small crimes lead to bigger crimes when there is little or no punishment or the kids feel that their parents will always bail them out.

KIDS BRUTALLY VANDALIZE MAN’S FAMILY HOME — BUT NOW HE’S THE ONE FACING JAIL TIME

Jesse Daniels, 53, is accused of endangering the welfare of children for the actions he took after catching four boys in the act of vandalizing his father-in-law’s home over the weekend. With extensive damage done to the inside of the house, Daniels and his wife called 911 — and he went inside of the residence to confront the boys.
But that’s not all: Daniels put the kids inside of a closet while he waited for authorities to arrive. It was this latter action that created an even bigger legal conundrum.
The vandalism unfolded in Clyde, New York, a small town between between Rochester and Syracuse. Daniels lives next door to the home — his father-in-law’s residence that is under continued renovation — and when he heard noises and saw the lights on, he knew something was wrong.

WHAM-TV has more about how the incident unfolded:
The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. Saturday when Jesse Daniels said he told his wife to call 911 after he heard loud noises coming from the home next door and saw an individual striking a wall with a hammer.
Daniels tells 13WHAM News he ran next door and found four children, ages eight and ten, doing damage to the property.  Daniels said he took a hammer from one of the kids and corralled them into a closet while he waited for police to arrive.  Daniels estimated that the damage to his father-in-law’s property exceeds $40,000.
Clyde Village Police took the children back to their parents and filed felony criminal charges of Burglary 2nd Degree and Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree.  Those cases will be handled in Family Court and the results of each case is likely to remain sealed.
Now, here’s where the details take a turn. Two days after this debacle, the police went back to Daniels’ home and arrested him. The parents of the children, claiming that the man threatened the kids with the hammer and was rough with them, insisted that charges be filed. So, Daniels faces four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The local man could face up to one year in county jail for each offense, meaning that a total of four years of detention, pending Daniels receives the max penalty, could be his ultimate ramification.
The children’s motivation for the attack on the home isn’t known, however WHAM-TV reports that Daniels claims that the boys were riding ATVs earlier in the evening on Saturday and that his wife told them to get off of their property. The home attack may have been a retaliatory act, he contends.
Accounts of what unfolded that night differ greatly. While Daniels says he merely put the children in the closet and told them to “be cool” until authorities arrived, the parents of the kids claim that Daniels went as far as to grab one of them by the throat; the boys, they claim, are traumatized by what unfolded.

Regardless of the exact details, the home is severely damaged. And after spending years renovating it for and with his father-in-law, Daniels isn’t happy.
“It just looked like a bomb went off it really did I can’t believe the power that it took to send (electrical) outlets six-inches into the wall,” he told WHAM-TV. “I’m very happy the children didn’t get hurt because porcelain shatters any one time they could’ve been blinded, they could’ve been slashed in the throat with a piece of porcelain.”
At least one of the parents is calling for increased charges against Daniels, despite admitting that the children’s actions were unacceptable.

Is The Fourth Estate Awakening?

Maybe, could it be happening? Is the news media awakening? Could the AP reporter phone conversations lead to the downfall of the Obama Administration? Once the press finally decides that the Administration is not their friend anymore, will they turn on them?  It looks like maybe, just maybe, some of the press has decided to start asking the tough questions.

NBC REPORTER CALLS OUT JAY CARNEY OVER OBAMA’S SUPPORT OF PRESS DURING CONTENTIOUS NEWS CONFERENCE

During today’s White House press conference, spokesman Jay Carney clashed with NBC News’ Chuck Todd over federal shield laws and President Barack Obama’s alleged flip-flop on journalistic protections.
Fielding some tough inquiries about Benghazi, the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups and the Department of Justice’s tracking of journalists’ phone records, Carney repeated familiar talking points throughout the presser and attempted to rebuff blame waged against the president and his administration.
NBCs Chuck Todd Calls Out Jay Carney Over Obamas Support of Press During Contentious News Conference
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney speaks during the daily press briefing in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, DC, May 14, 2013. Carney said the White House had nothing to do with the operation to comb the AP’s phone records — as part of an apparent case targeting national security leakers.’We are not involved in decisions made in connection with criminal investigations, as those matters are handled independently by the Justice Department,’ said Carney. Credit: AFP/Getty Images
The first question inquired about the Obama administration’s leadership, with a reporter noting that the president and Carney have continuously dismissed critics, accusing them of political motivation (Benghazi), while also blaming bureaucrats (IRS). That in mind, the reporter asked about tone and whether Obama should bear some responsibility for the scandals simply because he is the head of the federal government.
“The responsibility to set tone and to focus on priorities of the American people is absolutely [the responsibility of the president] and you see and hear him do that every day,” Carney responded, going on to claim that it’s important to look at each of the three current purported scandals separately for maximum understanding.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PHONE RECORDS SCANDAL
Later during the press conference, NBC News’ Chuck Todd got into a spirited debate with Carney over proposed legislation to protect journalists — legislation that the reporter argued would have prevented the most recent incident surrounding the AP.
After initially supporting federal shield laws before becoming president, Todd claimed that Obama inevitably killed the Free Flow of Information Act, which would have protected journalists from situations like we see developing this week between the AP and the administration. Here’s a transcript of the spirited debate between Todd and Carney — one that explains the overarching issues at length:
Todd: You keep talking about then Sen .Obama supported a certain piece of legislation that, in fact, as president he killed that piece of legislation in October of 2009 — and made it so that the protections he supported, having judicial review … there was an opportunity to have this bill passed … and he said the White House had problems with it and he killed it.
Carney: First of all, you’re talking about separate pieces of legislation and a legislative history that bears a little more looking into. The president’s position on this is what it was as a senator. But the fact is I cannot then appropriately apply his support for that measure –
Todd: If he supported that piece of legislation, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today because he supported a judicial review that seemed to settle this –
Carney: And what happened to it in 2007?
Todd: I’m asking you what happen in 2009 when he was president of the United States.
Carney: The legislative history here is a little more complicated that you represent.
Todd: Who cares about 2010, we know what he said on the campaign trail in 2008 in front of the Associated Press when it came to this issue. He had a chance to support this and make this bill happen … The admin said that essentially the president changed his position because of certain things on national security. Can you explain why?
Carney: Broadly speaking, the president does support the ability of journalists in an unfettered way to pursue investigative journalism. He believes we have to find a balance between that goal –
Todd: …He believed it in ’08, but he didn’t believe it once he was president. [...]
Carney went on to say that Obama has responsibility to ensure that information is not leaked and that the American public and national security are protected. Todd, though, argued that having a third-party watchdog decide these journalistic cases would make the most sense and would have been covered by the shield law.
Watch this exchange, below:
As far as the AP scandal goes, the spokesperson said that Obama “is a strong defender of the First Amendment and a free flow of information.” Additionally, Carney said that the president also has to balance this purported penchant for free speech with the need for the Justice Department to investigate criminal activity.
Watch Carney make these statements, below:
“The president feels strongly that we need the press to be unfettered in its pursuit of investigative journalism,” he later added.
And here is the press secretary’s quip about Fox News, when asked what is stopping Obama from calling Attorney General Eric Holder and asking what might have unfolded surrounding the AP scandal:

THE IRS SCANDAL
On the IRS front, Carney noted that Obama has little patience for the “reports” of troubling and partisan behavior, leading numerous journalists to note that officials have already admitted to targeting conservative groups. Despite this fact, Carney pushed back and noted that the administration would wait until an independent investigation has been undertaken to fully comment on the issue.
“[Obama] has no tolerance for the targeting about specific groups, conservative groups … and he would expect action to be taken,” Carney said. “But this is a matter when it comes to the IRS that is under review by the inspector general.”

Repeatedly, Carney refused to delve deeply into the ongoing investigations into both the IRS and the AP scenarios.
“All I can tell you is that I cannot and he cannot comment specifically about an ongoing criminal investigation or actions that … the Justice Department may or may not have taken,” he said specifically of the AP situation.
At one point a reporter questioned a comparison surrounding Obama that was recently touted — that the unfolding scandals are similar to the scenario that occurred under President Richard Nixon.
“People who make those kinds of comparisons need to check their history,” he said, going on to again dub Benghazi a “political sideshow” that is a “deliberate effort to politicize a tragedy.”
“Everything becomes a huge political issue when if you look at the facts and I think Benghazi is instructive in this,” Carney said. “The real issue is that four Americans died and we need to do everything … to finding out why.”
