On Thursday, we highlighted a Politico story in which sources suggested that the Department of Justice's Inspector General is preparing a report that will call into serious question the reliability of the so-called 'Steele Dossier' -- an anti-Trump, Democrat-funded opposition research document that played a significant role in the launch and continuation of the counter-intelligence probe that Robert Mueller eventually inherited and concluded.  Recall that the dossier (a) was bought and paid for by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, (b) was assembled by a foreign ex-spy with whom the FBI ultimately cut ties after it became undeniable that he was lying to them about media leaks, and (c) was an indispensable and central element of the Obama-era DOJ's applications for warrants seeking to spy on individuals tied to the Trump campaign.
Over the weekend, the New York Times published a piece that effectively confirmed what many the president's defenders have been arguing for quite some time -- namely, that the infamous dossier was full of false or unsupportable claims about then-candidate Trump.  Now they tell us:
The 35-page dossier, spiced up with tales of prostitutes and spies, sketched out a hair-raising story more than two years ago. Russian intelligence had used bribery and blackmail to try to turn Donald J. Trump into a source and ally, it said, and the Kremlin was running some Trump campaign aides practically as agents. But the release on Thursday of the report by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, underscored what had grown clearer for months — that while many Trump aides had welcomed contacts with the Russians, some of the most sensational claims in the dossier appeared to be false, and others were impossible to prove. Mr. Mueller’s report contained over a dozen passing references to the document’s claims but no overall assessment of why so much did not check out.

Now the dossier — financed by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, and compiled by the former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele — is likely to face new, possibly harsh scrutiny from multiple inquiries. Republicans in Congress have vowed to investigate. The Justice Department’s inspector general is considering whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation improperly relied on the dossier in applying to the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for a warrant to eavesdrop on Carter Page, a Trump adviser. The inspector general wants to know what the F.B.I. learned about Mr. Steele’s sources and whether it disclosed any doubts about their veracity to the court.
The Times story goes on to describe the supposed 'intelligence' contained in the explosive anti-Trump file as "rumors and hearsay" relayed through a "high stakes game of telephone."  It notes how many partisans on social media and various media outlets fixated on the dossier's contents "almost daily over the past two years," with many critics of the president swallowing whole the picture it painted of a man thoroughly compromised by the Russian government.  But...
Mr. Mueller, after a two-year investigation involving roughly 40 F.B.I. agents and other specialists, provided no evidence to support the claim that the adviser had collected a brokerage fee for the sale of a share of the Russian oil giant Rosneft. Nor has any evidence emerged to support the dossier’s claims about D.N.C. moles, Romanian hackers, Russian pensioners — or years of Trump-Putin intelligence trading. Other dossier assertions remain neither proved nor disproved...
We also now know that another core claim of the dossier -- that Michael Cohen traveled to Prague to meet with a Russian asset -- is false. With Mueller's investigation now over, having determined that the Trump campaign did not coordinate or conspire with Moscow's 2016 election interference project, it may be time for a reckoning over whether that probe was warranted in the first place (as I wrote in this post, I see arguments on both sides of this question).  Especially worrisome is the real possibility, now being openly conceded as highly plausible, that Steele's Russian sources deliberately spoon-fed him slander and disinformation:
Another possibility — one that Mr. Steele has not ruled out — could be Russian disinformation. That would mean that in addition to carrying out an effective attack on the Clinton campaign, Russian spymasters hedged their bets and placed a few land mines under Mr. Trump’s presidency as well. Oleg D. Kalugin, a former K.G.B. general who now lives outside Washington, saw that as plausible. “Russia has huge experience in spreading false information,” he said...Last year, in a deposition in a lawsuit filed against Buzzfeed, Mr. Steele emphasized that his reports consisted of unverified intelligence. Asked whether he took into account that some claims might be Russian fabrications, he replied, “Yes.”

Is it possible that the Russians planted salacious nonsense with Steele, hopeful that their invented claims would seep into public view, undermining Trump? Yes. It may even be probable at this point. Remember, while Moscow preferred Trump to Hillary, the overarching goal was to sow division and suspicion among Americans. In that sense, it's entirely conceivable that the dossier may have been the Kremlin's most effective interference operation to date -- exploiting credulous Democrats to spread baseless and damaging information against the Republican nominee, just in case he won. I'll leave you with Wall Street Journal columnist Kimberly Strassel pointing outkey controversies and curiosities that Mueller and company barely even touched upon:
What stands out is just how diligently and creatively the special counsel’s legal minds worked to implicate someone in Trump World on something Russia- or obstruction-of-justice-related. And how—even with all its overweening power and aggressive tactics—it still struck out...Note as well what isn’t in the report. It makes only passing, bland references to the genesis of so many of the accusations Mr. Mueller probed: the infamous dossier produced by opposition-research firm Fusion GPS and paid for by the Hillary Clinton campaign. How do you exonerate Mr. Page without delving into the scandalous Moscow deeds of which he was falsely accused? How do you narrate an entire section on the July 2016 Trump Tower meeting without noting that Ms. Veselnitskaya was working alongside Fusion? How do you detail every aspect of the Papadopoulos accusations while avoiding any detail of the curious and suspect ways that those accusations came back to the FBI via Australia’s Alexander Downer? The report instead mostly reads as a lengthy defense of the FBI—of its shaky claims about how its investigation began, of its far-fetched theories, of its procedures, even of its leadership.
Based on the forthcoming Inspector General report, and the Attorney General's recent hints about a broader review of his department's conduct throughout this matter, we have not heard the last of these issues.

If It Can Happen To Winner, Why Not Comey?

NSA leaker Reality Winner sentenced to more than 5 years in federal prison

NSA leaker Reality Winner has been sentenced to five years and three months in federal prison, the New York Times reported. The 26-year-old former intelligence contractor pleaded in June to leaking a top-secret government report to members of the media.
This sentence was the longest that has ever been handed down for unauthorized release of government information to journalists in the history of the United States, the paper noted.

What are the details?

Reality Winner pleaded guilty to printing out a classified report at the National Security Agency’s Augusta, Georgia, office, then tucking it into her pantyhose to smuggle it out of the building. She would mail this document to The Intercept.
That report detailed evidence of Russian cyberattacks during late 2016. United States Attorney Bobby L. Christine told reporters that he believed Winner had “caused exceptionally grave damage to U.S. national security.”
Winner’s lawyers, on the other hand, pointed to her time in the Air Force.
“She is someone who has done something she should not have done — and knows she should not have done,” John Bell, one of her lawyers, said during the trial. “But she’s not an evil person.”
Winner, who spent a year in jail before reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors, told the court that she “had no intention to harm national security.”

How was Winner found?

When The Intercept contacted the NSA for comment, the agency conducted an internal audit to determine the source of the leak. That audit found that only six people had access to the document. Of these six, Winner was the only one who had emailed The Intercept from a computer on-site.
“Yeah, I screwed up royally,” Winner said just before her arrest.
Prosecutors also accused Winner of being politically motivated.
In a Facebook chat, Winner told her sister, “Look, I only say I hate America like 3 times a day.”
She also called President Donald Trump an “orange facist” and a “soulless ginger orangutan,” followed NSA leaker Edward Snowden on Twitter and repeatedly used the hashtag #notmypresident for Trump.

How Opinions Change in Four Years--Real Or Fake? We Buy Fake

FLASHBACK: MSNBC laughs at “dumb” Russia meddling warning

MSNBC’s “Hardball” host Chris Matthews joined in on the mainstream media’s criticism of President Donald Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.
He opened the show asking his panel “Is the collusion continuing?” and encouraged an anti-Trump feeding frenzy.
But critics were quick to point out that not so long ago, Matthews was laughing in the face of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney when he suggested that Russians were meddling in the 2012 presidential election.
Watch as Matthews laughed at the “dumb” Russia meddling warning —

What has changed over the last six years?
In 2012, Matthews was brushing aside Romney’s warning because he wanted to make the then-GOP presidential candidate look like a fool.
Matthews pounced on Romney after he supposedly “stepped on his own message” and called Russia “our number on geopolitical foe.”

Matthews slammed the then-GOP presidential candidate and said “I don’t know what decade this guy is living… It’s not Stalin over there. It’s not Khrushchev. It’s not Brezhnev. It’s Medvedev… It’s another country in the world. It’s no longer the Soviet Union. Is he trying to play Ronald Reagan here or what?”
He and his panel went on to mock Romney and say the comment made him “look dumb.”
In 2018, though, MSNBC is in a full hysteria over Russia and their election meddling.
Another case of mainstream media hypocrisy.

When former President Barack Obama was in charge, the story was laughable.
Now that Trump is in the White House, though, Russia is the cause of mass hysteria?
Talk about “fake news.”

With Every Passing Day It Becomes Very Clear The Obama Administration Was Up To Its Ears In Willful Dismissal Of Russian Involvement In Elections

Limbaugh Digs Up Obama Dirt, Uses It To Destroy Establishment Media’s Russia Narrative

 Print
Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election is back in the headlines, as it rightly should be, given the recent indictment of 12 Russian nationals who apparently helped orchestrate the email hack of the Democrat National Committee’s computer system.
However, where the responsibility for preventing it lies remains another matter. The media, evidently, thinks we should really be looking toward President Donald Trump because he apparently didn’t condemn the alleged enterprise harshly enough during his news conference last week in Helsinki.
Yet, Trump hasn’t impeded the investigation into the hacks in any way. They’re in the hands of the special counsel’s office, after all, and few would claim that office is a hive of crypto-Trumpism. More to the point, the hacks didn’t occur during his presidency.
And, as Rush Limbaugh pointed out during his Wednesday show, it’s not as if Barack Obama emerged from the whole mess blameless.
Limbaugh began by reading a Yahoo News story from June 20: “Obama cyber chief confirms ‘stand down’ order against Russian cyberattacks in summer 2016 — The Obama White House’s chief cyber official testified Wednesday that proposals he was developing to counter Russia’s attack on the U.S. presidential election were put on a ‘back burner’ after he was ordered to ‘stand down’ his efforts in the summer of 2016.”

Here’s a video of the testimony:
“This is the Obama administration,” Limbaugh said on his program. “They knew the Russians were hacking. They knew Russians were engaging in cyber warfare, and the Obama White House chief cyber official testified that he was told to stand down. So Obama didn’t do anything about the Russians! Obama was telling everybody the Russians could not hack the presidential election. Obama was telling people that it was too massive and widespread and intricate, it couldn’t be done.”
And sharing the blame with Obama, in Limbaugh’s eyes, are the former president’s frequent co-conspirators, the Fourth Estate.

Do you think Barack Obama enabled the Russian hacks?

“The point is: Where was the media?” Limbaugh said. “Where was the media all hopped up about what Putin was doing in 2016, what the Russians were doing? Obama was telling everybody, ‘Stand down. No big deal! Don’t worry about it.’ What did Obama know that we didn’t know? Why did Obama want his own administration to stand down and not do anything? Could we maybe use the word ‘treasonous’? That Obama was willing to stand down and stand aside and let the Russians continue meddling and tampering and whatever?
“All of this that we’re talking about happened before Trump was even president. All of this happened before Trump — in many cases — even became a candidate,” he noted. “Somehow, all of this is Donald Trump’s fault, not standing up to the Russians. Here are two left-wing socialist reporters, David Corn and Michael Isikoff, writing that Obama told his cyber security people to ‘stand down’ in the face of Russian cyberattacks in 2016.
“Now, what can we infer from this? Did Obama think that the Russians were going to try to help Hillary and hurt Trump and so he wanted everybody to stand aside and let that happen?” Limbaugh asked. “Did Obama think that what the Russians were gonna do was somehow gonna benefit the Democrats and so the objective was to stand aside and let it happen? Where was all the outrage back then? Where was all the outrage when Trump was just a candidate and Obama is the president and he’s telling (Russian President) Dmitry Medvedev, ‘You tell Vlad to be patient.'”
“Where’s all this?” Limbaugh asked rhetorically.

“It’s nowhere. It’s nowhere to be seen. We can’t placate the media. Trump cannot dial back anything he’s done. You know what the real irony of all this is? The real irony of all this is how hard and tough Donald Trump has been on Russia since he became president. Donald Trump is not a Vladimir Putin secret agent. He’s not a pushover.”
Is this just the result of traditionally liberal media bias? Not to Limbaugh.
“We’re dealing with sheer hatred here,” Limbaugh said.
“We’re dealing with sheer hatred for Donald Trump for a lot of reasons and on a lot of levels. It’s not just enough to say that Trump is hated because he’s an outsider. That’s clearly an element, but there’s much more to it than that. It’s deep, and it’s visceral. So what matters? Words? Placating the media? Are we trying to soften the coverage here? Do Trump’s actions and his achievements against Russia not count for anything? And that may be the world we live in: Reality trumped by words, images, photos.”
While noting that the word “treasonous” is a bit strong (treason being a crime that carries the death penalty, I’m reluctant to use it in the same way that, say, John Brennan feels is appropriate), Rush is otherwise spot-on here. The reality of Trump’s policies toward Russia — airstrikes in Syria, arming the Ukraine military, etc. — simply don’t compute with the media’s picture of “collusion” or lapdogism.
Meanwhile, for Obama, the fact that his reactions toward Russia during the election cycle were ambivalent at best belies the media’s narrative that he was the bulwark of democracy at a time when it was in grave danger. That this mess exists at all, in fact, can partially be traced to the negligence of the Obama administration and the Democrat National Committee.
Trump inherited the election-meddling problem, along with a panoply of other issues involving Moscow. That very salient fact is hardly ever reported by a media willing to go along when former President Obama insists not a single scandal besmirched his presidency.
The fact Obama can’t think of one isn’t particularly surprising given the fact that he’s an awfully forgiving person when it comes to his own shortcomings. What’s the media’s excuse?
