Syrian Agents Try To Assassinate Netanyahu And Jerusalem Mayor

Israeli intelligence foils plot to assassinate Netanyahu, Jerusalem Mayor, other officials

The Israel Security Agency said a plot to assassinate the PM, orchestrated from Syria, also targeted Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.
By: World Israel News Staff and AP
Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency, said Tuesday that in recent weeks it thwarted a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A resident of a Palestinian refugee camp in east Jerusalem is among those in custody for his involvement in the plot, orchestrated from Syria, to harm Netanyahu and Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, the Shin Bet said.
The security agency arrested Muhammad Jamal Rashdeh, born in 1988, a resident of the Shuafat refugee camp who holds an Israeli ID card and was previously imprisoned for terrorist offenses.
Rashdeh also collected intelligence on his Syrian handler’s behalf to target the US Consulate in Jerusalem and visiting Canadian officials in Israel who had come to train Palestinian Authority forces in Judea and Samaria, the Shin Bet said.
The plan involved sneaking in an operative from Jordan and “significant terrorist activity,” which was foiled, the agency said.
Additional suspects were arrested who, under investigation, verified the suspicions against the cell. Their detention thwarted the aforesaid planned terrorist attacks.
Barkat said he was kept in the loop throughout the investigation and did not change his routine at all. “No threat will deter us,” he stated.
In March, 2017, the Shin Bet arrested a terrorist connected with the Lebanon-based Hezbollah who was reportedly involved in a plot to carry out attacks in Israel.
There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu.

Why Israel Should Not Adopt Unilateral Initiatives
By Maj. Gen. (res.) Yaakov Amidror, June 1, 2016
Publisher: The Begin–Sadat Center for Strategic Studies (BESA) Bar Ilan University, Israel
BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 343,
June 1, 2016,
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The moribund state of the peace process has prompted the suggestion of two opposing unilateral “solutions”: either Israeli withdrawal from, or the annexation of, parts of the West Bank. Neither would be wise policy. A partial withdrawal would likely increase, rather than decrease, Palestinian terrorism, as Palestinians would be motivated to push harder for total Israeli withdrawal. Annexation would inflame passions against Israel among the Palestinians, and engender opposition to Israel abroad, where it would be taken as bad faith in Israel’s commitment to peace diplomacy.
With respect to the Palestinians, the current situation can be described as stagnation clouded by terrorism: In 2002 it was Palestinian suicide bombers, and in 2016 they introduced terrorism at knife-point.
The surge in violence is not necessarily linked to the peace process, or lack thereof. Hamas arch-terrorist Yihye Ayyash, for example, wreaked havoc even as Israeli leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres were engaged in intense negotiations with then-Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Back then, a media establishment sympathetic to the Oslo Accords minced its words, calling the victims of terrorism “victims of peace.” But it was terrorism, plain and simple.
Over time, we have learned that even when terrorism appears to have ebbed, the quiet reflects not so much a diminishment of Palestinian terrorism as the ability of the Israeli military and the Shin Bet security agency to thwart it.
With little optimism for the future of the peace process, it is hardly surprising that many in Israel are distressed. The prolonged stagnation, compounded by the inability to present any viable alternative that would lead to comprehensive change, has bred suggestions meant to promote various worldviews, all under the guise of “partial steps seeking to meet current challenges.”
An in-depth study of these suggestions reveals, however, that they do not solve the problems at hand. They use false arguments to promote unilateral initiatives that will not only fail to help but can cause great harm.
In one corner, there are those who argue that although a two-state solution cannot be brokered at this time, it is in Israel’s interest to take steps toward that goal, even without the agreement of the other side. These advocates are willing to pay a hefty price up front for meager results that they hope will eventually work in favor of the creation of an independent Palestinian state. To that end, they favor the unilateral withdrawal of Israeli residents from Area C of the West Bank (a portion of territory categorized under the Oslo Accords as under full Israeli control), while allowing that the IDF will retain freedom of operations in this area.
This move is a roll of the dice that could tear Israeli society apart. Its proponents are prepared to take that risk in exchange for no real achievements on the international stage or among the Palestinians, who are sure to keep fighting what remains of the “occupation.” Terrorism will only worsen, as it has after every Israeli concession — but this time, without the benefit of an agreed-upon border. The concession would be the result of a unilateral Israeli withdrawal to a line that has no international legitimacy.
Some advocates of military withdrawal promote it as a means of gaining approval abroad, but experience suggests that this is a false hope. In 2005, proponents of disengagement from the Gaza Strip predicted that that unilateral move would win Israel precious points in the international community. As it turned out, that credit expired after a few months.
On the other side of the political spectrum, there are those who advocate annexation of Area C — the imposition, in other words, of Israeli sovereignty over a portion of the West Bank without defining the broader Israeli-Palestinian endgame.
The annexation idea suffers from the same weaknesses as the withdrawal idea, possibly to an even greater extent. Should Israel attempt to annex Area C, the international community would punish her mercilessly. Some parties are likely to push for statements, perhaps even sanctions, harsher than anything yet seen, possibly including official boycotts of Israel.
The global community will never accept Israel’s explanations of why such a move was necessary or justified. Everyone will claim that the change in the area’s legal status was intended to accomplish only one thing: to torpedo any chance of real peace negotiations with the Palestinians.
This would be a difficult charge to counter. The unilateral imposition of Israeli sovereignty over Area C would certainly prompt the Palestinians to slam the door on any further talks. The measure would therefore amount to a de facto declaration of a binational state.
Practically speaking, a change in sovereignty would do little to serve Israel’s interests. Nor would it benefit Israelis living in Judea and Samaria, whose primary need is security. The Shin Bet, for example, finds it easier to operate in an area under military control than under Knesset control.
When standing on the edge of a cliff, it is wiser to keep still than it is to step forward. This is always sound advice, and it is doubly so in the chaotic Middle East. It is obvious that the differences between Israel and the Palestinian Authority are so significant that any negotiations held at this time are doomed to fail. Moreover, this is not the time to embark on useless experiments or risky unilateral initiatives, either in the hope of preparing the ground for an eventual Palestinian state or in the hope of thwarting it. It is wiser to defer action than to take unilateral steps that threaten to make a bad situation worse.
Israel should focus instead on improving the lives of the Palestinians, as well as on how to navigate the situation the day after the departure of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as he has no heir apparent.
Simultaneously, it is imperative to determine the motives for the current wave of Palestinian terrorism and find ways to stop it. Israel also has to take action to counter the hostility leveled at it from around the globe. Some of this hostility is fueled by the claim that Israel’s expressed support for a peace process is mere lip service, especially when Israel undermines future negotiations by approving settlement expansion.
There are no simple solutions to these complex problems, but any steps taken must adhere to one vital principle: that a wide public consensus is more important than the details of any individual proposal. This is critical, if Israel is to maintain and bolster its internal resilience ahead of future threats. The greatest danger in implementing a proposal that discounts legitimate objections expressed by the public is that it would create a deep rift in society. Nothing is more important than ensuring that Israel is strong enough to weather the challenges ahead.

II The Major General’s Missing Discussion
By Jerome S. Kaufman
In his insightful discussion Maj. Gen. Amidror elects not to make the obvious argument. Israel has been there, done that. Unilateral Israeli release of territory has resulted in only unmitigated disaster. It began of course, with Shimon Peres deceitful re-vitalization of a totally defeated Yasir Arafat allowing him to return from Tunisian isolation. This was later followed by the Oslo Accords that naively ceded territory within Israel to a fictitious Palestinian Authority that was given the false aura of undeserved statehood.
Most recently in their unconscionable, irrational donations of territory, the political and military disaster strategist, Ehud Barak, snuck away in the middle of the night, abandoned our Maronite Lebanese Christian allies and relinquished the Southern Lebanese Security Zone. The terror organization Hezbollah immediately moved right in, slaughtered our Maronite allies and took over control of a large portion of Lebanon and has amassed tens of thousands of missiles on Israel’s Northern border. Only the disintegration of Syria and the birth of ISIS, “The Islamic State” has delayed their use against Israel.
The next major disaster was, of course, that of former military great hero, Ariel Sharon, who, for reasons that still remain beyond any rational explanation destroyed the thriving Israeli community of Gush Katif on the Northern Gaza Mediterranean coast in the process of relinquishing the Gaza Strip. Hamas, the infamous terrorist group dedicated only to Israel’s destruction, immediately moved in, completely took over all of Gaza and has been raining terror upon Israel ever since — with no end in sight
What then is the obvious conclusion that Israeli leadership choses to ignore and to not trumpet emphatically and irrevocably to the world – Giving up Israeli territory in any area to the Arabs only results in another center of greater terrorism on Israel’s immediate borders and shrinks the postage stamp sized country to even more indefensible borders. Furthermore, the creation of an arbitrary, completely unsustainable, unjustified Palestinian State, would only herald in the final episode of Israel’s demise and the final destruction of the Jewish people as its enemies have wanted since the beginning of time.
Unfortunately, the Jews themselves and their awful leadership have been their enemies’s most dedicated enablers.
What then will be the final fate of the Jews? We will have only to fall back upon the Haredim’s perennial expectation — The Coming of the Messiach.
And, in all due respect, I would not hold my breath.

Jihad Is A World Wide Problem And Has To Be Treated As You Treat Cockroaches!

ISIS Shifting Strategy, Putting Israel in the Crosshairs

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.” (Psalm 34:7)
As ISIS takes over more swaths of Syria each day, an Israeli official warned this week that an attack against Israel by ISIS is only a matter of time.
The unnamed senior defense official, speaking to the Hebrew language daily Yedioth Ahronoth, said that the jihadist group is increasing its global reach and ability to conduct attacks outside of Iraq and Syria, the boundaries of its declared caliphate.
The recent terror attacks in France and the US are a major indication of this shift in tactics by the Islamist group, the official explained.
However, what makes ISIS unlike most terror groups that attack Israel, such as Hezbollah and Hamas, is the lack of a central, organized structure. An Israeli response to an ISIS attack therefore become all the more difficult, the official said.
“Who would we even attack in Syria that the international coalition and the Russians aren’t attacking already?” he pointed out.
In October, ISIS released its first Hebrew speaking video threatening Israel directly and vowing that “not a single Jew would remain in Jerusalem.”
The Israeli military, aware of the growing threat posed by ISIS to Israel in both its northern border and the Sinai Peninsula, has been conducting surprise drills in preparation for “extreme” scenarios with jihadists.

While many Israeli officials have attempted to downplay the threat posed by ISIS, on Tuesday the Shin Bet announced that it had arrested five Israeli Arabs from Nazareth on suspicion of having ties with ISIS.
The cell members, who all hailed from the same family, were planning on carrying out a terror attack in Israel. They were arrested in a joint operation with Israel Police in October and November.
The ISIS terrorists were named as Abd al Karim Ihab Abdel Rahman Suleiman, 22; Mohammed Ihab Abdel Rahman Suleiman, 18; Abdel Karim Jamal Ali Suleiman, 23; Mohammed Salah Mohammed Suleiman, 19 and Murad Mohammed Salim Suleiman, 27.

According to the Shin Bet, the five men became more religious and self-radicalized, expressing growing support for ISIS and jihad. They held secret meetings and trained in the use of weapons in a grove outside Nazareth. Upon arrest, officials discovered two rifles, a Swedish Carl Gustav and a Russian SKS hidden by the cell.
Earlier this year, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon official declared ISIS an illegal organization, thereby making membership in the jihadist group or expressing support prohibited by law.
The latest arrest is not the first time ISIS-linked terror cells were busted inside Israel. In November, six Arab Israelis from Jaljulia were arrested for planning to join ISIS. A seventh member of the cell managed to hang-glide from Israel into Syria.
In October, seven men were charged with planning terror attacks against Israel in the name of ISIS, acquiring illegal weapons and surveilling police and army bases.

Israeli Arab Joins al-Qaeda Via Hang Glider

IDF Sent into Panic after Hang Glider Crosses into Syria to Join Terror Group

“Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.” (Isaiah 59:7)
An Israeli Arab caused quite a panic Saturday evening when he crossed the Golan Heights border into Syria using a hang glider, the IDF revealed in a statement Sunday morning.
The 23-year-old man, from the central Israeli town of Jaljulya, crossed the border with the intention of joining an al-Qaeda affiliated terror group.
The IDF mobilized large forces along the border after a military lookout spotted the hang glider crossing from Israel and landing inside Syria.
Following the cross border incident, the army conducted a military sweep of the Golan Heights, using UAV’s and aircraft to determine the identity of the hang glider and whether he was a soldier.
“During the night some operations were taken and the Shin Bet security service is leading the investigation,” said IDF spokesman Moti Almoz on Sunday. “If the story checks out, we will need to decide what to do further, but from a military perspective this is no longer considered a situation.”
Almoz failed to confirm which Syrian rebel group the hang glider joined. According to Ynet, the man landed in an area controlled by the Shuada al Yarmoug jihadist group. The terror organization has pledged allegiance to ISIS and has been fighting the Nusra Front.
The Golan Heights is a popular hang gliding destination in Israel due to its mountainous region. According to Almoz, the army has yet to discover from where the hang glider took off. “We did not see where he took off from but usually people glide from Mevo Hama,” he stated, indicating a community in the southern Golan Heights.
“We don’t know whether anyone was waiting to receive him on the other side, but we assume that someone gliding against the direction other people glide does so on purpose,” Almoz said.

When You Look The Enemy In The Eye, Sometimes They Fire Back. So It Goes In Jerusalem.

Prominent Temple Mount Activist Shot by Islamic Jihad Terrorist in Assassination Attempt, Shooter Killed

“Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.” (Psalm 62:8)
Prominent Temple Mount activist Rabbi Yehuda Glick, 49, was seriously injured Wednesday evening in a terrorist assassination attempt outside Jerusalem’s Begin Center following a conference about Jewish presence on the Temple Mount.
Glick, the head of the Temple Mount Faithful (Haliba) organization, was shot three times. The shooter was wearing a helmet and fled the scene on a motorcycle. It is now known that the shooter is 32-year-old Palestinian Mu’taz Hijazi, an Islamic Jihad activist.
Glick had just finished presenting at the conference, entitled “Israel Returns to the Temple Mount.” Witnesses at the scene said the shooter, who spoke with an Arabic accent, approached Glick and asked him to identify himself. He then shot the rabbi and fled on his motorcycle.
A Magen David Adom paramedic who first responded to the shooting told Tazpit News Agency, “We found a man suffering from a number of gunshot wounds in the upper part of his body.”
glick shootingGlick was immediately transported to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center in serious condition. He underwent emergency lifesaving surgery.
“His situation at this moment is stable but his life is at risk,” Dr. Yonatan Halevy, director general of Shaare Zedek said. He confirmed that Glick underwent surgery for gunshot wounds in the chest and stomach. Halevy added that Glick had lost a lot of blood and was given several transfusions.
Hijazi, the shooter, was killed early Thursday morning in East Jerusalem following a shootout with police. According to Jerusalem Police, counter-terrorism officers came under fire when they came to arrest Hijazi. They returned fire and Hijazi was subsequently killed.
“Anti-terrorist police units surrounded a house in the Abu Tor neighborhood to arrest a suspect in the attempted assassination of Yehuda Glick, immediately upon arrival they were shot at. They returned fire and shot and killed the suspect,” police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said.
The Shin Bet confirmed that the 32-year-old shooter was previously arrested by Israel and had served 11 years in Israeli prison. He was released in 2012.

Islamic Jihad has taken responsibility for the attack. “The assassination attempt on Glick is an act of Palestinian vengeance, in response to what is happening in Jerusalem,” an Islamic Jihad spokesman said on Thursday as reported by Channel 2.
Glick, a dual citizen of Israel and the US, has a long history of advocating for Jewish prayer rights on the Temple Mount. Glick was arrested last October for praying on the Temple Mount. He was barred from the Temple Mount but the decision was reversed following a 12-day hunger strike.
Responding to the shooting, MK Moshe Feiglin (Likud), who was at the conference, said that while the shooting was “terrible,” I was “quite expected.”
“Yehuda Glick was threatened all the time. The fact that permanent security was not assigned to him is a failure,” he said.
Glick has turned to police at least five times to report death threats against his life.
Economy Minister Naftali Bennett called on the prime minister to take a tougher stance on Jerusalem, saying that Netanyahu must return “Israeli sovereignty to Jerusalem.”
“Security is not delivered through actions, not talk. An attack in the heart of Jerusalem is a red-line,” he said.
Housing Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) said that the bullets aimed at Glick “were aimed at all Jews who wish to pray on the Temple Mount.”
MK Miri Regev (Likud), who was at the conference on Wednesday night, said that this type of act of terror was only a matter of time.
“The attempted murder of Yehuda Glick is an escalation of events in Jerusalem. As long as the Israeli government fails to act against terror, against incitement and against the Islamic Movement, terrorism will life its head not just in Jerusalem, but across the country,” Regev wrote on Facebook.
On Thursday, Netanyahu wished Glick a full recovery. “I would like to send my best wishes for a full and quick recovery for Yehuda Glick, who is now fighting for his life. I would also like to commend the ISA (Shin Bet) and the Israel Police for quickly solving this act of terrorism.”
The shooting comes amid weeks of escalating Palestinian violence in the capital. Last week, a Hamas affiliated terrorist plowed into a crowded train platform, killing two and injuring seven. Rioting has also rocked Jerusalem, with Molotov cocktail and stone throwing attacks become more frequent.
Israel has responded to the rise in violence by deploying an additional 1,000 security forces around Jerusalem. Following Wednesday nights shooting, Police Chief Yohanan Danino ordered police readiness raised to the second highest level nationwide. The Temple Mount was ordered closed to Muslims and Jews.
