Trump Is Unrepentant.

Trump: If 'Misunderstanding' on McCain, I'd 'Totally Take That Back'

By Greg Richter   |
Donald Trump on Monday came about as close as he likely ever will to saying "I'm sorry" for the firestorm he caused over the weekend when he said Sen. John McCain, a decorated prisoner of war, is not a war hero.

Appearing on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor," Trump talked to host Bill O'Reilly by remote from Trump Tower in Manhattan.

"Certainly if there was a misunderstanding I would totally take that back," Trump said after lots of urging from O'Reilly. "But hopefully I said it correctly and certainly shortly thereafter I said it correctly."

Story continues below video.

Most of Trump's Republican rivals and the Republican National Committee have condemned his comment in Iowa on Saturday. He initially said McCain is not a war hero, then added, "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

O'Reilly opened his show Monday with Trump and gave him the chance to apologize to McCain and other former POWs, who critics say also were insulted by Trump's words.

Trump's initial answer didn't satisfy O'Reilly, who accused Trump of dodging.

"You could have made the point that Mr. McCain's characterization of your supporters as crazies is false and you could have just said what you said right now, that the vets need better treatment and I, Donald Trump, am going to do that if elected. But then when asked about McCain you got into his war record, and I think you would admit here tonight that was a mistake because John McCain was a hero and you know it."

Trump insisted he had said nothing different, pointing to journalist Sharyl Attkisson'sfact-check of a Washington Post story where she said he immediately changed course and called McCain a war hero.

"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. You can backtrack into that," O'Reilly said. "The fact of the matter is, we just played the clip where you said he was captured and I like people who aren't captured. Now, you know that that wasn't correct."

O'Reilly went on to detail how McCain was on a bombing mission, was shot down, captured and tortured. When he was offered a chance at early release, McCain refused.

"Come on, Donald. You know the way that came off wasn't correct," O'Reilly said. "I've known you for a long time, and I want you to be honest. You do think John McCain is a hero. I know you do."

"I do. I said it," Trump said. "I actually said it four times, and I said it immediately when I went off stage because I was asked that question."

"There is no debate about John McCain's heroism. He is an American hero," O'Reilly said, before talking to Trump at length about his problems with McCain over what Trump describes as his lack of support for veterans.

After discussing that and border issues, O'Reilly gave Trump 45 seconds to address McCain "man to man."

"I have respect for Sen. McCain. I used to like him a lot. I supported him. I raised a lot of money for his campaign against President Obama," Trump said. "Certainly if there was a misunderstanding I would totally take that back. But hopefully I said it correctly and certainly shortly thereafter I said it correctly."

Still, he said, McCain should apologize to the thousands of Trump supporters that he called "crazies.' McCain has said he thinks of "crazies" as a term of affection.

Republican National Committee, Probably Under Pressure, Slams Trump. Was What Trump Said So Bad?

The RNC Condemns Trump’s Comments About McCain

GOPThe Republican National Committee released a statement this afternoon condemning Donald Trump‘s attack on John McCain‘s war hero status.
In case you haven’t heard, Trump slammed McCain today by saying, “He’s a war hero ’cause he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured.”
That comment was too much for a lot of conservatives, especiallyTrump’s Republican presidential rivals, and, it seems, the RNC as well.
This is the statement released by RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer:
Senator McCain is an American hero because he served his country and sacrificed more than most can imagine. Period. There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably.

McCain--Out Of Touch Senator

We know this is a month old, but it shows how out of touch Senator McCain is.  He is for gun control and he was in favor of legalizing illegal immigrants. What other poor decisions has he made?

We have lost a lot of respect for the man who is a war hero. He ran an abysmal Presidential campaign and essentially gave Obama the office.  It is time for Arizona to retire him.

What is your opinion?

‘What Are We Afraid Of?’ McCain Doesn’t Get Why Rand Paul And Friends Want A Gun Filibuster

Senator John McCain thinks Congress should debate gun control legislation.
Senator John McCain got on a CBS Newsshow over the weekend and freely admitted he didn’t understand why young Republican Senators preoccupied with Constitutional freedoms are threatening to stall a Democrat-led effort at passing a Federal gun control bill by filibustering.
McCain’s comments came in response to previous warnings by Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and a dozen other conservative Senators that they’ll do anything within the rules of procedure to prevent a gun control bill sponsored by Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) from coming to the floor:
I don’t understand it. The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand … What are we afraid of? Why would we not want – if this issue is as important as all of us think it is – why not take it to the world’s greatest deliberative body? That’s the greatest exaggeration in history, by the way, but, you know? Why not take it up in amendment and debate? The American people will profit from it. I do not understand why United States Senators want to block debate when the leader has said we can have amendments.
McCain went on to say he would welcome debate over mandating universal background checks, without saying he would support the measure outright. Reid’s bill seeks to expand background checks and crack down on “pass-through” third-party firearms purchases, along with a number of other gun control provisions; but he’s offered to open up the measures for bipartisan amendment when (and if) the bill comes to the floor.
Paul and others threatening the filibuster argue that the bill’s entire premise represents an affront to Americans’ guaranteed 2nd Amendment powers and, therefore, has no business even coming before the Senate for discussion.
Although McCain isn’t sympathetic with his peers’ use of the filibuster, it’s not as though he doesn’t have a record employing that very same tactic in past Senate debates. He invoked the threat of a filibuster in leading a (temporarily) successful 2010 effort to block a repeal of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on open homosexuality. And over his long career, he’s sided in favor of using the filibuster 287 times out of the 712 occasions he’s had the opportunity.
