As the GOP leadership continues to wage war on conservative challenges to establishment candidates, some Republican voters in South Carolina and Mississippi might be surprised to find that the candidate they voted for was backed by notoriously liberal former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

A POLITICO report out this week reveals that Bloomberg donated $250,000 to a PAC that supported Graham in the primary battle he won last month.

Bloomberg’s donation to the pro-Graham “West Main Street Values PAC” isn’t all that surprising, as the South Carolina Congressman’s record is littered with liberal-leaning and big-government positions such as his 2009 embrace of cap and trade tax hikes and support for amnesty for illegal aliens.

Graham spent more than $5 million in his primary race and beat out a field of six challengers.

Bloomberg also used his money to meddle in the controversial Mississippi Senate race wherein incumbent Senator Thad Cochran narrowly defeated challenging State Senator Chris McDaniel. The former mayor reportedly donated $250,000 to Cochran’s effort.

According to a source left unnamed byPOLITICO, the wealthy liberal’s motivation is propping up “candidates in primaries who have a track record of working across party lines.”

Conservative supporters of Republican Chris McDaniel were up in arms Tuesday night after McDaniel lost in Mississippi's Republican Senate primary runoff election. These conservatives were particularly furious that incumbent U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran had sought Democratic votes to push him over the top.

McDaniel led the charge, in a speech that quickly became anything but a concession late Tuesday night. He pointedly refused to concede or even mention Cochran's name in the speech but charged his opponent and supporters had decided the primary through "the help of liberal Democrats."

"There’s something strange about a Republican primary that’s decided by liberal Democrats," McDaniel said, after he was introduced by a supporter as "the Republican nominee" for Senate.

The conservative groups and others supporting McDaniel did not go as far as their preferred candidate, however. They acknowledged Cochran had come out on top, but they charged he did so at the expense of the party as a whole. Some threatened to leave the party. Others said establishment Republicans had lost support from their conservative base.

"This race was establishment versus Tea Party and when the GOP has to turn to Democrats to retain power, they have no principles," Amy Kremer, the former chair of the Tea Party Express and a supporter of McDaniel, told Business Insider. "If Cochran wins this race, the GOP establishment won, not with the support of the base, but by teaming up with Democrats. That means they have more in common with Dems than conservatives. 

"Conservatives have principles and are tired of the GOP ruling class elite that tax and spend like Democrats.  The GOP cannot win on their own, so what will they do in the general when they don't have the base and are running against Democrats? That is a losing ticket. Seems they didn't learn anything in 2012."

The old-school Cochran employed an unusual strategy in the runoff, courting black voters — the vast majority of whom are Democrats — and Democratic voters in general, who feared McDaniel would do damage if he emerged victorious in November.

It appears the strategy worked. In the 10 counties where Cochran's vote total improved most, blacks make up 69% or more of the population, according to FiveThirtyEight's Harry Enten. 

FreedomWorks, one of the conservative groups backing McDaniel, called Cochran's runoff strategy "disgraceful."

"If the only way the K Street wing of the GOP establishment can win is by courting Democrats to vote in GOP primaries, then we've already won," FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe said in a statement. "Tonight is proof that the K Street establishment is intellectually bankrupt, and we are going to have to clean it up."

If you think conservative juggernaut Rush Limbaugh is a champion for the Republican Party, think again.

The nation’s top-rated radio host just launched a blistering attack on the GOP establishment, calling it “corrupt” and “reprehensible” for aligning with Democrats to defeat a tea-party Republican in a Senate primary runoff.

On Tuesday night, six-term Sen. Thad Cochrane held off state Sen. Chris McDaniel by a narrow margin of 50.8 percent of the votes to 49.2 percent.

On Limbaugh’s Wednesday program, the host flayed the Republican Party’s tactics, holding up a flyer featuring photos of both candidates he said was indicative of the GOP’s efforts.

The tea party intends to prevent blacks from voting on Tuesday.

According to the Clarion-Ledger, Chris McDaniel and the tea party plan to prevent Democrat voting in the Senate runoff on Tuesday between Thad Cochrane and tea-party candidate Chris McDaniel. We know the tea party uses Democrats as code for African-Americans.

Don’t be intimidated by the tea party. Let’s turn out for all Mississippians and vote for Thad Cochrane. Thad Cochrane works for all Mississippians.

Mississippi cannot and will not return to the bygone era of intimidating black Mississippians from voting. We must rise up on Tuesday to have our voices heard on who will represent Mississippi in the U.S. Senate. VOTE THAD COCHRANE.

“The Republican establishment sought victory via Democrat voters in the runoff, and they got them,” Limbaugh said. “Without the African-American vote from Democrat-leaning counties, Thad Cochrane would have lost by eight or nine percent last night.”

“The Washington establishment – both parties – distribute a flyer claiming the tea party wanted to prevent blacks from voting on Tuesday. This, combined with other efforts, secured a turnout of black Democrat voters in a Republican primary that gave Thad Cochrane, in my view, a corrupt and undeserved victory.”

“What happened in Mississippi was that the most electable Republican candidate was thwarted by the Republican establishment,” he added.

“The establishment is going to align itself every which way it can against any outside challenger, like this tea-party candidate. … We have a result that is not representative of the Republican Party thinking in Mississippi. The technique that was used and the manner in which this was achieved is reprehensible.”

Under state election laws, Democrats could legally vote in the GOP primary, as long as they didn’t vote in the Democratic primary. According to the Washington Post, only 83,000 people voted in the Democratic primary.

McDaniel didn’t concede and slammed Cochran’s strategy of seeking support from Democrats.

“We have fought too long and we have fought too hard to have a voice in this party, and today the conservative movement took a back seat to liberal Democrats in the state of Mississippi,” McDaniel said.

Ironically, Limbaugh himself has championed a similar operation in the 2012 Democratic presidential primary, called “Operation: Chaos,” where he encouraged Republicans to vote for Hillary Clinton to keep the former first lady alive against Barack Obama.

But he explained there was a big difference in that effort compared to what happened in Mississippi.

“The Hillary Clinton forces did not join me,” Limbaugh said. “There was no way they were aligning with me or any other Republican organization.”

He also suggested leaders of the national Republican Party are not even interested in winning the White House again.

“This is something that I have sensed for many, many moons,” he opined. “I think the primary thing that matters is the Senate, more so than winning the White House.”

“It is the Senate and those chairmanships and being in charge of the money that seems to have everybody in the establishment salivating – but not to change the direction of the country, not to reverse the course we’re on, but to simply ascend to the captain’s seat of it.”

Despite his unhappiness with the Republican tactics in Mississippi, Limbaugh stressed, “I am not advocating for a third party. … They don’t win.”
