It’s now been months upon months of speculation about the supposedly 

nefarious connections between the Trump campaign and the Russian

government. Democrats have relied on Trump begging Russian dictator

 Vladimir Putin publicly to hack Hillary Clinton’s emails, connections between

 former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and the Russian government,

 and friendliness between Trump advisor General Michael Flynn and the

 Russians in order to suggest that Putin “hacked the election” on Trump’s 

behalf. They’ve also relied on various media reports suggesting that the 

intelligence community was participating in some sort of sophisticated 

surveillance operation that caught up Trump associates in chats with the

 Russian government.

There’s a lot of smoke.

Here’s the problem: there’s no fire.

At all.

We’re now six months in. Have we seen a single piece of actually

 incriminating evidence suggesting that Putin “hacked the election” on 

Trump’s behalf? Or have we just seen rumors and innuendos, all disowned

 in the ninth paragraph of a New York Times report headlining Trump-Russia

 contacts?

Here’s what we actually know.

1. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper Said There

 Was No Evidence of Collusion. Speaking with NBC’s Chuck Todd, Clapper

 was asked if there was evidence of collusion. Clapper: “Not to my knowledge.”

 According to Clapper, collusion or collaboration or uncovered information did 

not exist while he was there – i.e. up until January 20th. As Matt Taibbi of 

Rolling Stone says, “This is the former Director of National Intelligence

 telling all of us that as of 12:01 a.m. on January 20th, when he left government, 

the intelligence agencies had no evidence of collusion between Donald Trump’s 

campaign and the government of Vladimir Putin’s Russia.” Clapper also told

 ABC News, “There was no evidence whatsoever, at the time, of collusion

 between the Trump campaign and the Russians.”

2. Members of Trump’s Campaign Talked To The Russians – But There’s

 No Proof of Wrongdoing.There have been multiple media reports suggesting

 that the intelligence community knew that Trump associates were talking with

 the Russians. Each and every one of those reports contains the information

 that there’s no evidence that anybody did anything wrong, and that campaign 

officials often speak with foreign officials. As Andrew McCarthy of National

 Review notes, The New York Times ran with a hot-button piece titled,

 “Intercepted Russian Communications Part of Inquiry into Trump Associates” the

 day before Trump’s inauguration. The story contained this little detail, buried 

down in the article: “It is not clear whether the intercepted communications had 

anything to do with Mr. Trump’s campaign, or Mr. Trump himself. It is also 

unclear whether the inquiry has anything to do with an investigation into the 

hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computers and other attempts

 to disrupt the elections in November.” Oops.

3. The FBI Denies It Was Targeting Trump. After President Trump tweeted

 that the Obama administration had targeted him for wiretapping, FBI Director

 James Comey asked the Justice Department to confirm that such a claim was

 absolutely false. According to The New York Times, “FBI officials are said to

 be worried that the notion of a court-approved wiretap will raise the public’s 

expectations that the federal authorities have significant evidence implicating

 the Trump campaign in colluding with Russia’s efforts to disrupt the presidential 

election.” In other words, they have no such evidence. So Trump’s attempt to

 target Obama inadvertently exposed the fact that there’s no evidence the 

intelligence community thought Trump was in cahoots with Putin.

4. Even Democrats Are Backing Off The Trump-Russia Connections

 Narrative. Last week, Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) said on MSNBC that

 there were “transcripts that provide very helpful, very critical insights into

 whether or not Russian intelligence and senior Russian political leaders,

 including Vladimir Putin, were cooperating, were colluding with the Trump 

campaign at the highest levels to influence the outcome of our election.” This

week, Coons admitted he didn’t know of any “conclusive proof” that any 

such collusion took place, as John Sexton of Hot Air points out.

So far, it’s all implications and innuendos. There’s no hard evidence here. 

That doesn’t explain why Trump would have the platform changed on Ukraine,

 or why he seems so all-fired fascinated by Putin. But the suggestion that 

Trump worked with Putin to steal the election appears to be sheer leftist fantasy.

Russia didn't hack our election, but Barack Obama may have.

As the Daily Caller's Richard Pollock reports, the Office of the Inspector 

General is investigating why the Department of Homeland Security hacked

 into Georgia's election system. 

John Roth, inspector general for DHS, wants to know why the agency broke

protocol on its way to 10 unprecedented attacks on the system overseen by

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp — who is also one of the most vocal

critics about the Obama administration’s attempt to designate local and state

election machinery as part of federal “critical infrastructure.”

A Jan. 17 letter from Roth notified Kemp his office was officially “investigating

a series of ten alleged scanning events of the Georgia Secretary of State’s

network that may have originated from DHS-affiliated IP addresses.” A firewall

in Georgia’s system thwarted each attempt.

Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson and Kemp have clashed over a federal

government designation of election systems as  “critical infrastructure.”  Kemp

called it “political power play to federalize elections.”

This seems like yet another, last minute effort by the Obama administration to

 intimidate its critics. But it begs the question: What on earth is the Department

 of Homeland Security doing poking around in sovereign state election 

systems? Even more troubling, according to Pollock's report, is that DHS

 attacks occurred AFTER the election, but before the results were certified.

Legendary journalist Dan Rather refuses to allow our democracy to get steamrolled by a narcissistic madman like Trump.

After Trump’s first press conference and all the revelations about hacks and Russian mailing, Rather decided to send Trump a message directly.

Said Rather, “President Asterisk. Watching the press conference today and the days that have preceded it, I think that is what Donald Trump, with his dangerous mixture of big ego and thin skin, is worried about – especially when it comes to the Russian hacking determination. His beating of his chest and bellicose tweets about his big win and the sore losers who won’t accept it are really the actions of weakness not strength. He worries that history will consider him a less than fully legitimate president from the start – President Asterisk.”

He added, “What’s done is done with the vote. There will not be an election redo. But if you, Mr. Trump, fail to take the Russian threat seriously, there will be an asterisk next to your name. If you do not disentangle yourself from your business interests, if you promote corrupt or conflicted advisors and cabinet members, if you fail to understand the gravity of the foreign policy crisis you face, if you deprive millions of health care without an alternative, if you fail to act on the global threat of climate change, if you pit Americans against each other by race, gender, and religion, if you undermine science and reason, if you do these or any of the other items on a long list of what now seems probable, there will be an asterisk next to your name.” Ouch! Sanctions, Is This A Made Up Issue Or Is It Real. We Don't Know However, Whenever McCain And Graham Agree With Obama, We Are Skeptical.

Obama Applies Sanctions to Russia

Democratic accusations against Russia over interference in the 2016 presidential election have finally brought about a reaction from President Barack Obama. But due to the fact that his term is about to expire, it’s probably a case of “too little, too late” more than anything else.

The White House announced the government would be kicking 35 suspected Russian spies out of the country, sanctioning select known members of the Russian intelligence services and closing two Russian-owned spying compounds — one on New York’s Long Island and the other in Pioneer Point, Maryland.

The smaller of the compounds, a massive 36-room mansion in the Upper Brookville region of the Long Island’s Oyster Bay, was purchased in 1952 as a “weekend retreat” for Russian diplomats and contains a soccer field and an indoor pool. But the location of the compound was more important than rest and relaxation for visiting personnel; it was specifically chosen due to its proximity to notable U.S. defense contractor facilities.

The larger 45-acre compound in Maryland was apparently the scene of vodka-fueled parties for diplomats associated with the Russian embassy in Washington. Its location, too, was strategic, being not far from many government buildings and agencies.

“[The Russians] wanted to infiltrate those defense contractors to find out what America is up to militarily — what kind of weapons are they using and making,” said a high-ranking former U.S. intelligence official. They are still old school in that they infiltrate people who work for companies in order to gather information that will help Russia.”

“All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions,” said Obama in Hawaii while vacationing there. “Such activities have consequences.”

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan stated Obama’s efforts are “an appropriate way to end eight years of failed policy” with Moscow but that they “[serve] as a prime example of this administration’s ineffective foreign policy that has left America weaker in the eyes of the world.”

At the same time, one can only think that these acts are sour grapes since the FBI first reported Russian hacking of emails of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) more than a year ago. In April, a top Obama administration aide met Russian officials to formally complain about the invasive cyber attacks.

The White House declined to reveal this fact publicly for months. This was after years of objectionable Russian behavior, from the invasion of Crimea to the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17, which was traced by Dutch investigators to a Russian missile.

Eventually, the U.S. sanctioned a few Russian oligarchs, but it didn’t make more serious efforts, such as resurrecting a proposed missile-defense strategy for Eastern Europe or extending non-lethal aid to Ukraine in its recent conflict with Russia. In fact, it’s possible to make the case that Obama’s lack of action actually helped Russia and may have encouraged it to push limits in both Europe and Syria.

It’s plausible that with the aforementioned responses, Obama thinks that he’ll anger Russian President Vladimir Putin and that Putin will take his anger out on new American President-Elect Donald Trump.

The initial reaction from Moscow was one of displeasure. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the Obama administration a “group of foreign policy losers, angry and shallow-brained.” Zakharova claimed Americans had been “humiliated by their own president” and compared Obama’s actions to those of American leaders in the Cold War.

The Russian embassy in the U.K. tweeted a picture of a duck with the word “lame” superimposed over it, accompanied by text reading, “President Obama expels 35 diplomats in Cold War deja vu… everybody will be glad to see the last of this hapless administration.”

But Russian President Putin has already seen past Obama’s efforts. Instead of countering the acts, he metaphorically shrugged his shoulders, saying, “Russian diplomats returning home will spend the New Year holidays with their relatives and dear ones. We will not create problems for U.S. diplomats… Reserving our right to respond, we will not stoop to a ‘kitchen’ level of irresponsible diplomacy, and we will take further steps to rebuild Russian-American relations based on the policy carried out by the administration of President Donald Trump.”

Rather than expelling 35 American diplomats in a tit-for-tat measure directed at Obama, Putin instead invited the diplomats’ children to a Christmas and New Year’s party at the Kremlin; Putin is clearly looking forward to a probable “reset” of relations with the U.S. after Trump takes off on January 20.

Hours later, Trump praised Putin’s tactfulness. “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) — I always knew he was very smart!” the President-Elect tweeted.

Many analysts agreed with Trump’s take. “Putin’s reaction to sanctions effectively communicates he feels Obama’s done, can be ignored and that Trump [is] already making U.S. foreign policy,” tweeted David Rothkopf, Foreign Policy magazine’s editor-in-chief.

While it may be diplomatically unacceptable for Trump to reverse these moves by Obama, it seems clear a new Russian “reset” is in the cards for the near future. The two men have a good relationship, and it doesn’t make sense for either country to pursue the policy of naked aggression that the Obama administration has been pressing in its last days.

However, that does not preclude a buildup of the countries’ respective military (and nuclear) arsenals. Both Trump and Putin have indicated such plans may be in store for the coming years.

The US Army will deploy nearly 6,000 troops, along with tanks, infantry vehicles, heavy howitzers, and combat helicopters to step up its “armored presence” in Eastern Europe, where a massive NATO buildup to counter an “assertive” Russia is underway. 

The 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team (3rd ABCT) of the Colorado-based 4th Infantry Division will deploy 4,000 soldiers in the region in January of next year, the US Army said in a press release.

In addition, the Army will send more than half of the New York-based 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, comprising 1,750 airmen, along with 60 aircraft, including CH-47 Chinooks, UH-60 Blackhawks, and medevac helicopters, according to Stars and Stripes. 

Both units will be part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, the US-led buildup on Russia’s borders whose stated goal is “reassuring” America’s Eastern European allies, which claim to perceive a threat from Russia.

The 3rd ABCT is said to be the first “rotation” armored brigade that will be deployed in Europe. It will first arrive in Poland, where the brigade’s headquarters will be set up, along with an armored cavalry unit and a field artillery battalion wielding self-propelled M109 Paladin howitzers.

Other brigade elements will spread across the region, Army Lieutenant Colonel Jason Brown, a 4th Infantry Division spokesman, told the newspaper.

One battalion with M1 Abrams tanks will be stationed in Estonia and Latvia, while another will operate in Germany. A mechanized infantry battalion with M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and M1 Abrams tanks will move to Romania and Bulgaria.

“I am confident we are the right heavy brigade to continue the armored presence in Europe,” Colonel Christopher R. Norrie, commander of the 3rd Armored Brigade, said on Thursday.

In the meantime, the 10th aviation brigade is expected to be headquartered in Germany, while its units will be forward-based at undisclosed locations in Latvia, Romania, and Poland, Stars and Stripes reported.

This is the latest in a series of recent US and NATO-led deployments in the Baltic states and Eastern Europe. Earlier, the bloc sent up to 4,000 troops to the region as part of a multinational unit that includes US, German, British, and Canadian battalions.

Norway, a Nordic country bordering Russia in the north, will see a “limited rotational force” of approximately 330 Marines deploying at the Vaernes military base in January of 2017.

In the Black Sea, the US and NATO maintain a naval task force, along with Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense sites in Romania that became operational earlier this year. The second missile defense compound is expected to go online in Poland next year.

The heavy buildup appears perfectly fit the current mood of Western policymakers. On Thursday, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO’s former Secretary General, openly called upon the US to be “a world policeman to restore international law and order,” while criticizing the Obama administration for its reluctance to employ military forces overseas.

Russia has consistently said it will take reciprocal measures to counter the security threats emerging on its western borders, which will include forming new army units and accelerating the modernization of its military.

Putin Is Not Afraid Of Obama

Friday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) reacted to President Barack Obama’s pledge on NPR to take action on the alleged Russian hacking.

Obama had declared that the United States needs to take action and will take action in the interview. However, Johnson pointed out that often in Obama’s presidency, the president’s words were not followed with action.

“For most of his presidency, the only consequences are him saying that there are going to be serious consequences,” Johnson said. “So, I’m sure at this point in time, Vladimir Putin is just shaking in his boots. Now, there ought to be serious consequences but they should be relayed in advance to some of these state actors that are showing the kind of aggression because of America’s weakness in our response to them. So, we need to take this very seriously. It is not just about saying there will be serious consequences. There actually have to be some.”

Johnson went on to point out the “mess” President-elect Donald Trump is inheriting from Obama.
