On Thursday, great political thinker Rosie O’Donnell, a frequent verbal sparring
partner with President-Elect Donald Trump, took to Twitter to call for an end to
American republicanism in order to stop Trump from taking office.
Here’s what she tweeted:
There are several problems with this statement. First, there are no charges
against Trump. Second, martial law has not been declared in the United
States since the Civil War. When it has been declared, it’s sometimes been
declared for reasons Rosie O’Donnell wouldn’t like (say, for example,
Governor Patterson of Alabama declaring martial law in his state in 1961 to
fight freedom riders he called “outside agitators”). Martial law means that the
president can essentially overrule the legal process – and yet O’Donnell thinks
this is a great way of fighting authoritarianism.

The left has lost its mind over Trump’s election. Their dark fears of Trump as a
Russian Manchurian candidate will either be justified or unjustified –
presumably, we’ll find out as intelligence agencies check into rumors and
the press go digging with the tenacity of a cocaine-ridden bulldog. But the
notion that American democracy ended with Trump’s election is patently absurd.

Yet leftists are scared senseless. It turns out that they were fine with executive
tyranny so long as their guy was in charge. Thus, Patton Oswalt tweeted:

There are reasons to be skeptical of a Trump presidency. But the unmitigated
panic with which the left has treated Trump’s victory is cringeworthy.
