Israeli-American teen arrested in Israel for over 100 JCC bomb threats

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Israeli teenager who also has American citizenship was arrested on suspicion of carrying out more than 100 bomb threats on Jewish institutions in the United States.

Israel’s anti-fraud squad arrested the 19-year-old suspect at his home in southern Israel and searched the premises on Thursday. He also is accused of a series of threats made in Europe, Australia and New Zealand in the past six months, according to reports in Israel.

Israeli police said the teen has been the subject of months-long undercover investigation by the anti-fraud unit, as well as the FBI in the United States and law enforcement in other countries. He has lived in Israel for many years, Haaretz reported.

He appeared in court in Rishon Lezion on Thursday for a remand hearing, where he was ordered held over until March 30. His motives are unknown, according to reports.

Ynet, which reports that the teen is from Ashkelon, reported that during the hearing the teens attorney requested that he be placed under supervision after raising concern for his mental status, claiming that he might try to harm himself. The attorney told the court that the teen has had a brain tumor since the age of 14, and has been homeschooled since then. The attorney said that the tumor affects his behavior, Ynet reported.

The teen reportedly used advanced technology and voice-altering equipment to call in the threats to more than 100 JCCs, Jewish day schools and other Jewish institutions in the United States, according to The Times of Israel. He also is accused of making a threatening call to Delta Airlines, leading to the emergency landing of at least one plane.

During the cyber unit’s raid on the teen’s home, police found a computer lab with sophisticated equipment, encryption and transmission systems, and a powerful antenna, according to reports.

The army refused to draft the teen after finding him unfit for service, Haaretz reported.

His father also has been detained on suspicion that he knew about his son’s activities, and ordered held in jail until March 30.

Israel’s minister of public security, Gilad Erdan, commented on the teen’s arrest.

“I congratulate the Israeli police on leading a complex international investigation, together with law enforcement agencies from around the world, which led to the arrest of the suspect,” Erdan said. “We hope that this investigation will help shed light on some of the recent threats against Jewish institutions, which have caused great concern both among Jewish communities and the Israeli government.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a statement praised the work of the Israeli police and the FBI.

“The Department of Justice is committed to protecting the civil rights of all Americans, and we will not tolerate the targeting of any community in this country on the basis of their religious beliefs,” Sessions said in the statement. “I commend the FBI and Israeli National Police for their outstanding work on this case.”

Earlier this month, a St. Louis resident and former journalist, Juan Thompson, was arrested and charged for making at least eight bomb threats against Jewish community centers and the Anti-Defamation League.

Thompson, 31, made some of the threats in the name of a former romantic partner he had been cyberstalking and some in his own in an attempt to portray himself as being framed. He was charged with cyberstalking, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

During the holiday of Sukkot last month, Jews worldwide began praying for rain to fall in the land of Israel. It would seem that the prayers were heard, for winter rains have begun in force, with precipitation approaching record levels in some areas of the country. The rainfall has culminated in major flooding in the city of Ashkelon.

Ashkelon, on the southern coast of Israel, was hit with intense flooding on Monday morning, as 20 millimeters of rain drenched the city. Houses were damaged and emergency services were required to rescue people stranded in cars  stuck in the deep water that flooded the streets.  The rising floodwaters threatened Brazilai Hospital, causing a partial shutdown and the cancellation of any non-essential services that could be postponed until after the emergency has passed. The most shocking development came when a huge sinkhole opened up in Ben Yehuda Street, swallowing a part of the sidewalk and road. The major thoroughfare was closed until further notice.

Israel is not the only country experiencing extreme weather, though it has had more than its share in the last few months. After inexplicable sandstorms, the country was hit before the New Year by unusually powerful rain and hail storms that some described as apocalyptic.  In a year in which many believe the war in Syria and other current events could presage Messianic times, it seems to some that the weather may have joined the trend. The current storm in Israel was essentially described by the prophet Zephaniah:

“For Gaza will be abandoned and Ashkelon a desolation; Ashdod will be driven out at noon and Ekron will be uprooted. Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast . . . ” (Zephaniah 2:4)

A similar prophecy was made in the Book of Zechariah:

“Ashkelon will see it and fear, Gaza will writhe in agony” (Zechariah  9:5)

“And God was seen above them, and His arrow will go forth like lightning.  And the Lord God will blow the Shofar, and go forth in the stormwinds of Yemen” (Zechariah 9:14)

In fact, two hurricanes of historical proportions hit Yemen in recent weeks, marking the first time in recorded history that the country has ever seen a tropical storm. Two weeks ago, a category three storm named Chapala slammed Yemen with 85 mph winds, flooding the country with several years’ worth of rain and proving to be the most damaging natural disaster ever to hit the war-torn country. On November 3, one week later, Hurricane Megh hit Yemen.

JERUSALEM – The 72 hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is scheduled to end Friday morning at 8:00 AM, and Hamas is threatening to renew its rocket fire on Israeli civilian targets at its conclusion.

Hamas spokesman Moussa Abu Marzouk stated that “There is no agreement on the extension of the truce,” the Cairo-based Hamas member wrote on his Twitter feed.

Another spokesperson for the group, Ismail Radwan, said “there is not extension to the calm. We have yet to receive a response to the demands.” He was referring to Hamas’s conditions presented at the Cairo ceasefire negotiations.

However, Al-Arabiya is reporting that a deal to extend the current lull by an additional three days had been reached.

Israel has reportedly agreed to extend the current ceasefire, as indirect Israel-Palestinian negotiations over extending a truce in Gaza are currently underway in Cairo. Quoting an Israeli official, Reuters reported that Israel has conditionally agreed to extend a ceasefire. The official did not specify how long the ceasefire would be extended.

Communications Minister Gilad Erdan, a member of the Security Cabinet, warned that if Hamas renews its rocket fire on Israel, the IDF will escalate its reaction. Erdan told Israel Radio that while Israel has “no objections” to the rehabilitation of the Gaza Strip, and that a truce is within reach, Hamas and Islamic Jihad cannot be permitted to rearm.

The IDF’s Home Front Command has lifted all safety restrictions placed on Israeli civilian activity since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge, and all towns in the south have complied with these new instructions, except the city of Ashkelon.

Speaking on IDF Radio, Ashkelon Mayor Itamar Shimoni explained that he decided not to lift the safety restrictions because: “In contrast to the Home Front Command’s decision, I do trust the Hamas. We are already hearing threats that they might return to fire on us on Friday. We will wait another day or two and see if the operation ends well and if we have a good agreement. I hope we can celebrate.”

After withdrawing the bulk of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip in a “new phase” of its counter-terror operation, Israel declared a unilateral humanitarian ceasefire for seven hours starting 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4 to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and for displaced Palestinians to return to their homes. Eastern Rafah was not included. The IDF would respond to any attacks during that time.

But on the quiet, the IDF was on the process of conducting a major strategic operation, carving out a buffer strip or cordon sanitaire just inside the Gaza border, designed to be controlled from outside by special forces and armored units on round-the-clock alert, to bar hostile infiltrations. They are equipped with a battery of firing posts, sensors and drones.

This sterile strip runs 65km from Beit Hanoun in the north to Khan Younis in the south, roughly following one of Gaza’s only motorways, Highway 6 (see map).

All the territory east of this line up to the Israeli border has been cleared of buildings and vegetation to a depth of 1 km in the north and center of Gaza and 2-3 km deep in such areas as Khan Younis.

These dimensions were calculated to reduce Palestinian rocket fire against Israel’s southern communities, and deter Hamas from planning new tunnels.

The Israel troops pulled out of Gaza are redeploying in a new formation as a “breakthrough force” – able to cross back into Gaza for rapid response operations if necessary. It is made up of large armored units, special operations contingents and air force, and is highly mechanized rather than fielding soldiers on foot. This force is capable of raids that penetrate deeper into the territory than ventured by the IDF in the first 27 days of Operation Defensive Edge.

For the new phase of its operation, the Netanyahu government has determined to have no truck with the Hamas terrorists and, irrespective of its demands and terms for a ceasefire, to act on its own initiative in accordance with Israel’s own security needs.  This policy has impacted on the Gaza truce negotiations which go into their second day in Cairo Monday. Their participants cannot avoid appreciating that Israel has followed its own operational plans for redeployment outside the Gaza Strip.

At the same time, military experts warn that the new military formation opens up the prospect of a prolonged war of attrition. Hamas and Islamic Jihad are keeping up their rocket and mortar fire on Israel – up to 140 Sunday alone.
After a quiet night, the first rockets were intercepted by Iron Dome over Ashdod and Ashkelon at 6:30 a.m. Monday.

The threat of “synchronized” terror attacks through still undiscovered tunnels has been sharply reduced by the massive IDF effort to disable the network – but there is no guarantee that all of the tunnels have been discovered, or that new ones are not being burrowed under the border.

Saturday night, three dusty motorcycles were pulled out of the 3-km long Rafah tunnel through which suicide bombers surprised and killed three Givati officers Thursday 90 minutes into an international ceasefire. They were intended for use by six terrorists for a raid or raids far from the immediate environs of the Gaza border.

So Hamas still holds the advantage of nasty surprise.

Ariel Sharon is dying. It’s not considered nice to say bad things about dead people, especially immediately after their passing. So I’m writing this while he’s still alive. Barely. When I heard the news I wasn’t sure if I wanted to laugh or cry. Laugh, that finally, he’s leaving us. Or cry, because his ‘this world’ suffering is coming to an end.

That’s how much I like Ariel Sharon. He had many positions, and many titles. I will remember him as a monster. When elected to the office of Prime Minister in March, 2001, the 2nd Intifada, or what we call the Oslo War, was well underway. Terror attacks, shootings, and the like had begun. In Hebron, Arab terrorists had taken positions on the hills surrounding the Jewish neighborhoods and were shooting at us like ducks in a pond. Great for target practice, but not when the targets are men, women and children, in their homes, cars, or just plain walking down the street.

Sharon could have stopped it. He didn’t. It continued for almost a year and a half, here in Hebron. Only after the Passover Massacre in Netanya and the killing of five year old Danielle Shefi at Adura, just outside of Hebron, did he finally put an end to the nightmare. He was Prime Minister when most of the over 1,500 people murdered during that war. He could have stopped it. He didn’t. But that was just the beginning.

The expulsion from Gush Katif (Jewish communities on the coast of Gaza) and the Northern Shomron, abandoning the southern tip of Israel to Hamas, brought over 13,000 rockets into Israel, into Ashkelon, Ashdod and Tel Aviv – to this very day. Actually, it began with Menachem Began. He set the precedent, with Ariel Sharon as his right-hand man, implementing the expulsions from the Sinai, giving it to the Egyptians after the Yom Kippur War in 1973, There Sharon learned that it is possible to forcibly remove Jews from their homes, destroy Jewish communities and abandon land to our enemy (without the Israeli nation executing him as a traitor.)

What then is the punishment of people who remove cities from Israel, abandoning the land, expelling the people, endangering the population? What happened to them, what was their fate: Begin, the hero of Jewish underground, the leader who destroyed the Iraqi nuclear threat, secluded himself for years following his resignation as Prime Minister, unseen until his dying day.

Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated.

Ehud Olmert, one of the primary initiators of the Gush Katif catastrophe, has undergone numerous trials on charges of corruption, facing disgrace.

Katzav, who as President refused to oppose the Gush Katif expulsion, imprisoned following conviction for rape, from the president’s mansion to a jail cell.

Ariel Sharon, suffering the worst kind of hell, neither here nor there, not dead, not alive, for the past eight years. Some 8,600 people were expelled from the Gush, a year for every thousand people. And one can only image what he will face when trying to enter the pearly gates of heaven.

It is written that there is a ‘place’ somewhere between this world and the next, called in Hebrew “Kaf HaKelah.” This is a kind of nether land — not here, not there. It is written that here, such souls who have so sinned in this world, float around, not being in this world, or the next, a kind of horrible limbo. Usually, for such deserving souls, this aspect of punishment happens following a person’s death. In Sharon’s case, it began here in this world.

There is a story, told now for years, about how a famous Rabbi cursed Ariel Sharon, saying he should receive a blow on his head. People approached the Rabbi and expressed their opposition to this curse. So, the Rabbi then blessed Sharon, saying, ‘he should live a long life.’ It seems that both the ‘curse’ and the ‘blessing’ were achieved.

So what (or who) should this come to teach, what is the lesson for the future? This is what I ask the present Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, as he seems to be negotiating away our land, Eretz Yisrael. Be it Hebron or Shilo, Gitit in the Jordan Valley, or the Arab villages of the ‘Mishulash, on the eastern Sharon plain, bordering Samaria. This is all our land.

It is clear that, at present, there are at least two parallel sets of discussions going on; those led by Justice Minister Tzippy Livni and those being led by Netanyahu himself, seemingly with Abbas, aka Abu Mazen. The US is pushing, but Israel doesn’t necessarily have to budge. That’s up to us; it is up to our Prime Minister, Foreign Minister (who today came out publicly in favor of an agreement), and the Defense Minister. And the others.

What will be in store for them, what will be their fate, should they choose to walk in the footsteps of Ariel Sharon?
It is difficult to fathom their blindness, how and why they reach such depths of absurdity — to even speak of such concessions, of such abandonment, of such expulsions, again.

One thing is very clear: the United States, and in this case, the Secretary of State John Kerry, is pushing very hard, harder than any of his predecessors in recent history. We can only imagine the types of pressure he is applying on Netanyahu. However, it should be known, the word ‘Kerry’ in Hebrew has a distinct meaning: impurity. It is a term utilized to express a tainted uncleanness, almost a defilement, of body and soul. This term quite accurately describes the American SOB. Sometimes, such scum can be contagious. It seems that, in this case, it is starting to rub off on others.

I can only say: Bibi beware. Don’t fall into the potholes left to you by Sharon. And to the others, who can join him, or leave him, can support him or bring him down, your fate is too hanging in the balance. Purify yourselves from the contamination of Kerry. Before Sharon’s miserable fate will almost look good to you.

Now David Wilder rightfully fears that Netanyahu is on the verge of another such gargantuan error giving Arabs more land in Judea and Samaria and allowing them a so-called Palestinian State for which the Arabs have only one goal — the final destruction of the State of Israel.) jsk
