For all the hand-wringing that goes on about President Donald Trump’s many insults, the anti-Trump crowd often has no problem dishing out some shots of their own, as Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) showed Sunday night, according to the Miami Herald.

Hastings, who has been in office since 1992, made a joke about Trump during a rally attended by Sen. Bill Nelson and several leading Democratic gubernatorial candidates.

“Do you know the difference between a crisis and a catastrophe?” Hastings asked the crowd. “A crisis is if Donald Trump falls into the Potomac River and can’t swim…and a catastrophe is if anybody saves his ass.”

The crowd laughed and applauded at the punchline. Hastings said he got the joke from former state Rep. Barry Silver’s son.

The rally was titled “Stronger Together.”

Not the first time

Hastings has made no secret about his disdain for Trump, and has a reputation for making incendiary comments about the president over the past few years — dating back to the campaign, when he referred to the then-Republican nominee as a “sentient pile of excrement.”

At the rally, Hastings also said that he expects that Omarosa Manigault Newman will bring Trump down — that is, if Special Counsel Robert Mueller doesn’t get the job done first.

“There is no question that something is tragically wrong with the president of the United States in his mind,” Hastings told the crowd.

Hastings’ controversial remarks aren’t just reserved for Trump, either. Back in 2008, when speaking at a conference of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Hastings said of Sarah Palin: “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through.” He later apologized.

The Florida lawmaker is in a comfortable position heading into midterm elections; he is heavily favored in the Democratic primary, and there will be no Republican challenger awaiting him in November.

A Florida Gun Show event attracted a record-breaking number of attendees over the weekend, organizers told WTSP-TV — almost 7,000 came to the show at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa on Saturday. More were expected Sunday, the station said.

While the gun show’s manager, George Fernandez, told the station he’s never witnessed such a large crowd, he concerned about the recent push for addition gun-control legislation in the wake of the recent deadly mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school.

“Some of persons that are attending are afraid that further legislation might impact their gun ownership rights,” Fernandez told WTSP.

What gun-control measures are being considered?

Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (Fla.) told the station he wants to close the so-called “gun-show loophole,” which allows purchases at gun shows without background checks — as well as an assault weapons ban.

“When the NRA killed the law in 2004, the number of deaths as a result of assault weapons has grown up like a rocket taking off,” Nelson told WTSP.

Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott’s “action plan” to keep kids safe includes raising the legal age to buy a gun from 18 to 21, banning “bump stocks” and helping people who suffer from mental health issues, the station reported.

What does Fernandez have to say about possible legislation?

Fernandez told WTSP that about 95 percent of the vendors at the Tampa gun show are licensed dealers legally required to run background checks on buyers — and the remaining 5 percent of vendors are private citizens.

Several Florida counties have passed ordinances requiring private citizens to run background checks on gun buyers also, the station said.

But Fernandez added to WTSP that tightening the gun-show loophole wouldn’t have stopped the recent deadly mass shooting at Parkland, as 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz passed a background check before buying an AR-15.

“This was a mental health issue,” Fernandez also told the station. “This is someone that should have been identified from the beginning by law enforcement.”

What did a dad protesting the gun show have to say?

“If you want to protect yourself, get yourself a revolver or how about learning how to fight,” Sergio Gonzalez told WTSP.

What is the Florida Gun Show doing next?

The company canceled next month’s event in Fort Lauderdale after the mayor asked that the outfit show respect to the Parkland victims, but it will sponsor another Tampa show in late April or early June, the station said.

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week heard testimony about the U.S.’s failed efforts to defend democracy against “information warfare” the government alleges is being waged against the nation by countries like Russia.

On Thursday, lawmakers in the Senate hear testimony from cyber-security experts who lamented that the U.S. has failed to keep up with the pace of technology in keeping outside propagandists from leveraging the power of social media to manipulate American opinions.

“Today, cyber and other disinformation-related tools have enabled Russia to achieve operational capabilities unimaginable to its Soviet forbear,” said Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.)

Rounds serves as the chair of a brand new Senate subcommittee overseeing Pentagon cyber-security efforts.

The lawmaker added: “Ultimately, we will continue to struggle with cyber-enhanced information operation campaigns until we address the policy and strategy deficiencies that undermine our overall cyber posture.”

That’s a lot of jargon to say basically that the government is very, very interested in deciding what type of information from who should be permitted to reach mass audiences. That, of course, shouldn’t come as a surprise.

But given the great strides the internet has made in making it easier than ever for average people to share ideas and the massive damage it did to establishment efforts to elect Hillary Clinton, government is beginning to work overtime to regain control of the mass narrative. Russia is simply a scapegoat.

“This is a whole new magnitude greater,” Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) said. “Our government and our society remain ill-prepared to detect and encounter this powerful new form of information warfare or to deter it through the threat of our own offensive information operations.”

At One Time They Thought The Wall Was A Good Idea. How Come Not Now?

There was a time when the Democratic Party struck a far more populist

tone. Back during the "Blue Dog" era, when Democrats were trying to

convince middle Americans that they shared their values and cared

about protecting their gun rights, their jobs, and their faith. Then

President Obama got elected, and they forgot all about that.

But it's worth revisiting now. Why? Because President Trump is

likely going to go to Congress to get funding for his wall, and he's

going to be the subject of a lot of criticism. Which is hilarious,

because a lot of the key Democrats who will be opposing him

once thought a wall was a pretty terrific idea. As the Daily Caller reports:

If Trump and Republicans follow through, a number of top Democrats

will find they inadvertently handed Trump the border wall they

now oppose. Their only option to block the construction would be

to shut down the government over the matter by blocking the

spending bill, a strategy they have consistently mocked and

derided Republicans for using in the past.

In addition to then Sens. Obama, Biden and Clinton, 64 House

Democrats and 23 Senate Democrats voted for the wall in 2006.

Many of them are still in Congress, including newly-established

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Other Democrats in the Senate who voted for the wall in 2006

are Sens. Barbara Boxer (CA), Sherrod Brown (OH — then in

the House), Tom Carper (DE), Dianne Feinstein (CA), Barbara

Mikulski (MD), Bill Nelson (FL), Debbie Stabenow (MI), and Ron

Wyden (OR).

There are also a number of Democrat representatives still in

the House who voted for the bill: Sanford Bishop (GA), Michael

Capuano (MA), Jim Cooper (TN), Jim Costa (CA), Peter DeFazio (OR),

Steve Israel (NY), Ron Kind (WI), Daniel Lipinski (IL),

Stephen Lynch (MA), Carolyn Maloney (NY), Bill Pascrell Jr. (NJ),

Collin Peterson (MN), C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (MD),

Tim Ryan (OH), and Adam Smith (WA).

If Team Trump is smart, they'll ask these people to explain why

they no longer think securing our southern border is a priority.

Their constituents should too.
