Netanyahu: Israel’s policy is to prevent enemies from acquiring nuclear weapons

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Israel’s security services for their success in eliminating Syria’s nuclear capabilities a decade ago, while issuing a veiled threat to Iran that Israel will not allow it to develop a nuclear bomb.

Following Israel’s official acknowledgment on Wednesday that it attacked and destroyed the Al-Kibar nuclear facility in Syria in 2007, Netanyahu stated that “the Government of Israel, the IDF and the Mossad prevented Syria from developing a nuclear capability. For this they are deserving of all praise.”

“Israel’s policy has been and remains consistent – to prevent our enemies from arming themselves with nuclear weapons,” he added, seemingly referring to Iran’s current nuclear aspiration.

During the night between September 5 and 6, 2007, Israel secretly bombed the Syrian nuclear reactor, in accordance with the Menachem Begin Doctrine, which states that no Israeli adversary in the Middle East should be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.

The operation was deemed a success. The nuclear facility was destroyed and an escalation in the region was prevented.

The destruction of the Syrian reactor was an historic operation of great significance for the State of Israel and the Jewish People and one of the most important military operations in the IAF’s history.

Current Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, OC Northern Command at the time of the operation, said the message that should be taken from the incident is that “Israel will never accept an existential threat against it. That was the message in 2007, and that is the message to our enemies in both the near and distant future.”

Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon stated on Wednesday that “the international community must know that Israel will always protect the security of its citizens and take all necessary steps in the face of threats in our region,”

“Our enemies would be wise not to test Israel’s resolve or question our readiness to defend our nation,” Danon stated, echoing Netanyahu’s message.

Prime Minister Netanyahu, in his capacity as foreign minister, said Wednesday that he would redirect $2 million from Israel’s funding to United Nations institutions in favor of “deepen[ing] and expand[ing] Israeli projects in the field of international assistance,” a reference to the foreign ministry’s MASHAV program.

“This decision is part of Israel’s campaign, together with its friends, and especially the United States, to correct the obsessive discrimination against Israel at the UN and its agencies,” said Emmanuel Nahshon, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The slash in funding comes on the heels of last Friday’s UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session in Geneva, where the Council adopted four resolutions condemning Israel, including motions condemning construction in Judea, Samaria, eastern Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, and one urging countries and corporations to avoid all ties with the settlements.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon wrote on Twitter that “The halls of the UN are being infiltrated by BDS.”

The UNHRC resolutions are only the latest in a wave of UN condemnations of Israel. Earlier this month a  United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCWA) report said that “available evidence establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that Israel is guilty of policies and practices that constitute the crime of apartheid as legally defined in instruments of international law.”

In December, Security Council Resolution 2334 asserted that settlements in “Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967” are illegal under international law and and constitute “a major obstacle to the achievement of the two-state solution and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.”

Since the inauguration of Donald Trump as president of the United States, however, it has appeared that Israel has an ally at the world body. In a sharp contrast to the tone set by former President Barack Obama, Trump’s ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has declared war on what she considered an obvious anti-Israel bias. Earlier this week Haley told the annual AIPAC conference in Washington that the days of Israel bashing at the UN are “over” and that there is a “new sheriff in town.”

Israeli and American-Jewish leaders congratulated President Donald Trump on his swearing-in Friday, as the new Republican commander-in-chief promised an “America First” agenda in his inaugural speech.

“Congrats to my friend President Trump,” Netanyahu wrote on Twitter. “Look forward to working closely with you to make the alliance between Israel and the United States of America stronger than ever.”

Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. Danny Danon also warmly welcomed Trump, saying, “A true friend of Israel will enter the White House today. Thank you President Trump for your unequivocal support, we look forward to welcoming you to our capital of Jerusalem.”

“After the shameful resolution that was adopted by the Security Council, Israel looks forward to strengthening our most important alliance and leading together towards a new era at the U.N.,” Danon said, referring to December’s Resolution 2334, which condemned Israel’s settlement policy and passed after the Obama administration’s refusal to veto the measure.

In his inaugural speech, Trump echoed many of the populist themes from his campaign, in which he promised to restore American jobs, manufacturing and prestige.

“From this moment on, it’s going to be America first. America first,” Trump said. “Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers and American families.”

Following Trump’s address, Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center delivered a benediction for the incoming administration.

“Eternal God, bless President Donald J. Trump and America, our great nation,” Hier said. “Dispense justice for the needy and the orphan, for they have no one but their fellow citizens. A nation’s wealth is measured by its values and not its vaults.”

Leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, a coordinating body on international and national concerns for 52 national Jewish groups, said they “look forward to working with President Trump and his administration to deepen the historic special relationship between the U.S. and Israel, enhance the safety and security of the Jewish state and its people and on other issues of vital importance to the American Jewish community.”

“Among these [issues] are the multiple threats posed by Iran, promoting peaceful resolutions wherever possible, standing forcefully against terrorism and its backers, and fighting anti-Semitism and racism,” said Stephen M. Greenberg, chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman and CEO, of the Conference of Presidents.

Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) leaders said they “appreciate our new president’s determination to eliminate the scourge of radical Islam, and his quote of one of our favorite lines from Psalm 133, often sung by the Jewish people, about dwelling together in unity.” Trump said in his speech, “We will shine for everyone to follow. We will eradicate radical Islamic terrorism from the face of the earth. When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice. The Bible tells us, ‘How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.’”

The Obama administration’s criticism of the current Israeli government only serves to make Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party more popular with the electorate, charged Likud Knesset Member Danny Danon in a U.S. radio interview Sunday.

Danon was speaking on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” on New York’s AM 970 The Answer.

Danon had been asked about some recent accusations the Obama administration may be trying to influence the March 17 general elections in Israel by repeatedly criticizing Netanyahu’s policies.

The Likud politician charged “there are a few people in the administration who sometimes want to get involved and I can tell you one thing. Whenever somebody tries to get involved in our politics they actually are achieving the opposite direction.”

He continued: “For example, when President Clinton was trying to get involved in the elections in Israel, he was supporting the Likud party. The same for today.

“The more pressure we see that comes from the U.S. it makes my party, the Likud party, stronger. Because the people understand that the prime minister and the Likud Party are standing on the issues.”

Danon stressed he was referring only to some White House members and not the general U.S. leadership.

He spoke of Israel’s “very strong relationship with the United States,” which he told Klein he had personally witnessed.

“I was in the Pentagon in the last summer as the deputy minister of defense and I was exposed to the level of support and confidence that we have between the strong nations,” stated Danon.

Leftist politicians here have repeatedly utilized Obama administration criticism of the current Israeli government to attack Netanyahu politically.

In October, Israel’s Ynet news website reported that a request by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon to meet with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice during his visit to Washington had been denied by the White House. This reported move is highly unusual, and was seen in Israel as a nearly unprecedented snub of Netanyahu’s government.

It helped to set off a firestorm against Netanyahu domestically, particularly among the center and the left, with senior politicians Tzippy Livni and Yair Lapid leading the charge.

Also in October, the U.S. espoused uncharacteristically harsh language to oppose a plan for Israel to build 2,610 new homes on empty lots in Givat Hamatos, a Jerusalem neighborhood in the eastern section of the city where Palestinians want to build a future state.

Immediately following a meeting between Netanyahu and President Obama in October, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki and White House spokesman Josh Earnest took the Israeli leader’s delegation by surprise when they released nearly identical statements slamming the Jerusalem construction.

They warned the housing plans could distance Israel from its “closest allies,” a clear euphemism for the U.S., and questioned whether Netanyahu was interested in peace.

Netanyahu for his part said at the time that he was “baffled” by the U.S. criticism, stating the American position “doesn’t really reflect American values.”

Lapid and Livni endorsed the U.S. condemnation and accused Netanyahu of damaging U.S.-Israeli relations.

Lapid took further issue with Netanyahu’s plan to build roughly 400 homes in Har Homa and about 600 in Ramat Shlomo.

“This plan will lead to a serious crisis in Israel-U.S. relations and will harm Israel’s standing in the world,” Lapid said.

Again in October, the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg described relations between the U.S. and Israel as a “full-blown crisis” and reported that senior Obama administration officials had called Netanyahu “chickensh-t” on matters related to the so-called peace process.

Lapid jumped on the remarks to release a vaguely nuanced criticism of Netanyahu: “I said only a few days ago that there is a real crisis in the relations and it needs to be dealt with responsibly,” he said, while lecturing U.S. and Israeli officials on the “need to tackle the crisis behind the scenes.”

Adding more fuel to the firestorm, Israel’s Ha’aretz newspaper reported last month the Obama administration had held a classified discussion a few weeks earlier about possibly taking more proactive measures against the “settlements,” including mulling sanctions or punishing Israel at the United Nations.

The State Department dismissed the claims as “unfounded and completely without merit.”
