The Zionist of Organization of America (ZOA) called attention to the fact that six of the seven Muslim-majority nations covered by President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban currently deny entry to travelers who hold Israeli passports.

ZOA President Morton Klein issued a statement Feb. 3 praising British Prime Minister Theresa May’s comment during a recent House of Commons session that “it is absolutely right that this House should be aware of the discrimination and the ban that exists around the world…particularly for those who are Israeli citizens.”

Sixteen countries bar entry to Israeli passport holders, including Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Of those countries, Trump’s executive order applies to citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Somalia is the only country falling under the U.S. travel ban that allows Israeli passport holders to enter.

Klein said ZOA “urges others to join with Prime Minister May in condemning the anti-Israel ban. It is hypocritical to protest the temporary ban of a few months on travel from the seven ‘countries of concern’ that are hotbeds of radical Islamist terrorism targeting Americans and the West, while ignoring the decades-long anti-Jewish bans by 16 Muslim-majority nations.”

Defending Trump’s order, the ZOA leader said that in the countries covered by the travel ban, “radical Islamist terrorist groups and/or governments target U.S. citizens traveling there for kidnapping, unlawful arrest and detention, terror attacks, and murder. There is no U.S. embassy available to help U.S. travelers in Iran (since 1979); Libya (since 2014); Somalia (since 1991); Syria (since 2012); and Yemen (since Feb. 2015). The U.S. embassies in the two other ‘countries of concern’ are limited in what they can do….The fact that the U.S. does not even have a sufficient presence in the countries of concern to protect our own citizens also demonstrates the extraordinary difficulties—or inability—of U.S. officials to properly vet persons from those countries who seek to enter the U.S.”

Aside from ZOA’s support for the travel ban, national Jewish organizations have reacted to the measure with a mix of condemnations and calls for caution.

Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) President Morton A. Klein released the following statement:

As a bi-partisan organization, the ZOA treasures opportunities to work with lawmakers and opinion makers on “both side of the aisle.”   Alarmingly, Congressional bipartisanship on pro-Israel issues, as well as on issues related to U.S. security, is likely to be immeasurably harmed if radical Muslim-American Congressman Keith Ellison a/k/a Keith X. Ellison a/k/a Keith Hakim a/k/a Keith Ellison Muhammed (D-Minn) becomes the new Democratic National Committee (the “DNC”) chair.  Ellison’s efforts to insert anti-Israel provisions into the 2016 Democratic platform, his statements to the press, his efforts to defeat a pro-Israel Jewish Congressman in a faraway district, and his ties to radical anti-Israel and anti-Semitic groups, coupled with his experience persuading several dozen fellow Democrats to join his anti-Israel initiatives, are of grave concern. 

In 2014, Ellison was one of only 8 Congresspersons who voted against a bi-partisan bill to provide $225 million to Israel’s “Iron dome” missile defense system.   (395 representatives voted for the bill.)   (See “Video: Keith Ellison explains his vote against Iron Dome,” by Jazz Shaw, Aug. 3, 2014.)  

And in 2010, Ellison spearheaded and convinced 53 other Democratic Congresspersons to sign his infamous “Gaza 54” letter to President Obama, which falsely accused Israel of humiliating and wreaking “collective punishment” on Gaza residents and demanded that President Obama should pressure Israel to lift the Gaza blockade.   Ellison’s demand would have enabled Hamas to obtain more weapons to kill and terrorize innocent Israeli civilians.  (See Hamas’ 54 Democratic Congressmen, by Daniel Greenfield, Jan. 26, 2010.)   

Ellison was a devotee and worked for anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan for many years… and co-sponsored anti-Semitic speeches by Kwame Ture entitled, “Zionism, Imperialism, White Supremacy or Both.” 

The anti-Israel smears in Ellison’s “Gaza 54” letter are still being used today to promote anti-Israel, anti-Semitic boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS), on the website of the leading BDS group in the U.S, which also asked readers to thank Congressman Ellison.

Ellison also co-authored and spearheaded a letter demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress regarding the Iran deal must be delayed until after the sanctions deadline – when the visit would have been useless.  (See “Rep. If he becomes DNC leader, Ellison will likely be empowered to persuade even more Democratic Congresspersons to join him in actions hostile to Israel’s security and Israeli civilians’ lives – wreaking enormous damage to the prospects for future bi-partisan support for American’s closest ally in the Middle East.  

Elevating Ellison to DNC Chair could help establish a stark pro-Israel/anti-Israel divide between America’s political parties.

During the same interview, Ellison also suggested that Israeli “occupation” was to blame for a “humanitarian crisis” and lack of sewage processing in Gaza – while ignoring that Israel withdrew from every inch of Gaza, and that Hamas diverts the electricity needed to operate Gaza’s sewage treatment plant to Hamas’s terrorist tunnels and operations.

And just last June, Ellison approvingly tweeted a Hebron window sign falsely accusing Israel of expropriation and portraying Israeli security precautions as “apartheid.”   The sign stated:  “CAUTION: THIS WAS TAKEN BY ISRAEL.  YOU ARE ENTERING APARTHEID.”

Incredibly, during a DemocracyNow! TV interview Ellison also made the nonsensical argument that America should not kill a leading terrorist located in Yemen, who was responsible for numerous deaths of Americans and was continuing to foment some of the worst terror attacks on Americans, because the terrorist would consider his own death to be a “reward.”  Ellison stated:  “Anwar al-Awlaki is not scared to get killed. You know, he is somebody who wants — who has delusional, fantastic, crazy dreams of being some kind of a martyr.  And so, why reward him with that?”  

In addition, the Investigative Project on Terrorism (ITP) documented that Ellison received substantial campaign contributions from donors with a history of connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, the parent of designated terrorist organization Hamas; and spoke at Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) fundraising dinners and defended CAIR on the House floor.  (See “Keith Ellison’s Muslim Brotherhood Support,” IPT News, April 22, 2010.)  CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case, for its involvement in funneling money to Hamas.  ITP also reported that Ellison accused moderate Muslim Dr. Zuhdi Jasser of fomenting bigotry against his own people.  

And just two months ago, Ellison defended the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) on the House floor.  (See “ISNA Outraged by the False Accusations Made During Thursday’s Congressional Hearing and Grateful to Congressman Keith Ellison for His Remarks,” ISNA website press release, Sept. 23, 2016.)   ISNA is another unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case, for involvement in funneling money to Hamas.

Human rights attorney Brooke Goldstein also described “the very clear connections of Keith Ellison groups to radical Islamist groups, to anti-Semitism. . . . He has spoken at numerous Council on American Islamic Relations conferences.  This is a group that has ties to Hamas, a designated terrorist group.  He’s spoken three times for the Islamic Society of North America.  At the conference in 2008, they were handing out materials calling America a terrorist organization, and calling for the destruction of Israel and the United States.”  (“Potential DNC Chair Keith Ellison’s History of Anti-Semitism,” Nov. 17, 2016.) 

Ellison also was a devotee and worked for brazen anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam for many years.  The Weekly Standard reported Ellison’s extensive involvements, including: raising funds and leading anti-police chants to support cop-killers; co-sponsoring a vicious anti-Semitic speech by Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichael), entitled “Zionism: Imperialism, White Supremacy or Both?” while ignoring Jewish law students’ pleas to Ellison not to sponsor the speech; speaking at a public hearing on behalf of the Nation of Islam in support of a woman alleged to have said “Jews are among the most racist white people I know“; appearing on stage at a Million Man March for the Nation of Islam in 1995 with Khalid Abdul Muhammad, who reportedly said: “If words were swords, the chests of Jews, gays and whites would be pierced.”  (See “Louis Farrakhan’s First Congressman,” by Scott W. Jerusalem Post Senior Editor Caroline Glick noted that Ellison lied when he claimed (when he first ran for Congress) that his association with the Nation of Islam was brief.  Glick explained:  “Ellison was a long standing member of the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam. . . . Ellison’s association with the Nation of Islam dated back at least since 1989 and stretched at least until 1998.  During that period, he not only knew about the Nation of Islam’s Jew hatred, he engaged in it himself.”  (“The Ellison Challenge: The Democratic Party’s Move Towards Anti-Semitism, a move made apparent through Ellison’s rise, is one movement the Jews mustn’t lead,” by Caroline Glick, Jerusalem Post, Nov. 18, 2016.)

Ms. Glick also stated, citing the work of writer Scott Johnson, “Ellison is an anti-Semite.  He also defends cop killers.”  (Id.)

Ellison also spouted “blame President Bush” 9/11 conspiracy theories.   Ellison analogized Bush’s prosecution of the war on terror to Hitler’s rise to power, saying:  “After the Reichstag was burned, they blamed the Communists for it and it put the leader of that country [Hitler] in a position where he could basically have authority to do whatever he wanted.”   This reportedly even led the Anti-Defamation League to demand that Ellison must retract his remarks, saying: “[Ellison’s] comments comparing the rise of Nazism in the aftermath of the burning of the Reichstag to the War on Terror in the aftermath of 9/11 is outrageous and offensive to all Americans.”  (See “Compare and Contrast: The Reichstag Fire and 9/11,” by Matt Snyders, City Pages, July 19, 2007.) 

Where are the ADL and other Jewish groups like some in the Reform Movement that profess to care about anti-Semitism and bigotry now?  Why are they silent about Ellison’s frightening anti-Israel, anti Semitic record? Yet, they are wrongly screaming about Trump aide Stephen Bannon’s alleged anti-Semitism. If someone with Ellison’s record were running for Chair of the Republican National Committee would ADL be silent??

Ellison is also likely to use the tremendous power and funds that would be available to him as DNC chairman to help elect anti-Israel Democrats and defeat pro-Israel Democratic Congresspersons.   Ellison has already demonstrated that he is willing to go to enormous lengths to defeat pro-Israel Democrats.  In 2012, Ellison traveled across the country, raised funds and spoke at mosques in New Jersey, urging Arab-American residents of New Jersey to defeat pro-Israel Democratic Jewish Congressman Steve Rothman.  (See “Democrats Purge Pro-Israel Congressman,” by Adam Kredo, Free Beacon, June 6, 2012)

JNS article reported that NORPAC Chairman (and ZOA Board Member) Dr. Ben Chouake stated that he fears that if Ellison is elected chair of the DNC, “one of his priorities will be to pull the party away from Israel” and that Ellison represents “the fringe of the Democratic Party, not the center, and would  make it even harder for the party to have broad appeal,” and that “Rabbi Menachem Genack of Englewood, New Jersey, a prominent Jewish supporter of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, said [that electing Ellison as DNC chair] . . . would ‘accelerate the process’ of pulling the Democratic Party away from its traditional pro-Israel positions.”  (Id.) 

Similarly, Democratic New York Assemblyman Dov Hikind stated that Ellison “is the most radical candidate imaginable, someone who represents the extreme left wing of the party, which is why he’s being promoted by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and J Street—in other words, Ellison is being backed by all the wrong people if you care about Israel. . . .  If Israel has to depend on support from the Ellisons of the world, it would be in serious trouble.”  (Id.)

In sum, Congressman Keith Ellison’s Anti-Israel positions and anti Semitic record are too divisive and dangerous to appoint him to head the DNC. ZOA urges Senator Chuck Schumer and others to take a strong stance against Ellison.

TEL AVIV – Alan Dershowitz, a staunch Democrat and emeritus law professor at Harvard University, is hitting back against the smears claiming White House appointee Steve Bannon is anti-Semitic, arguing it is “not legitimate to call somebody an anti-Semite because you might disagree with their policies.” 

Speaking in a telephone interview with this reporter, Dershowitz stated:

I think we have to be very careful before we accuse any particular individual of being an anti-Semite. The evidence certainly suggests that Mr. Bannon has very good relationships with individual Jews. My former researcher, Joel Pollak, is an Orthodox Jew who takes off the Jewish holidays, who is a committed Jew and a committed Zionist, and he has worked closely with him. He has been supportive of Israel.

So, I haven’t seen any evidence of personal anti-Semitism on the part of Bannon. I think the (Breitbart) headline about a Conservative Republican being a renegade Jew was ill-advised. But it doesn’t suggest to me anti-Semitism. It suggests to me a degree of carelessness.

I think the larger problem – and it’s a very complicated one today – is how you assess a person who himself might not have negative characteristics, but who has widespread appeal to people who do. And I think that problem exists on the right and the left. I think there are left-wing candidates who appeal to some of the worst bigots on the hard left. Anti-Semites on the hard left. Anti-Israel people on the hard left. And I think the same thing is probably true of some very right-wing conservatives who appeal vertently or inadvertently to people whose values they probably themselves don’t agree with.

Asked whether the claims against Bannon demean the term “anti-Semitism,” Dershowitz replied:

I think so. And I think one has to be very careful about using the term anti-Semitic in two ways. One, I don’t think anybody should be called or accused of being anti-Semitic unless the evidence is overwhelming. And then the second, more subtle and difficult issue is what about characterizing supporters or people who follow them?  Subtle distinctions have to be made.

One has to be concerned about any group, right or left, that has widespread appeal to bigots. And I think they have to look in the mirror and ask themselves why. And that’s a legitimate point to make.

But it is not legitimate to call somebody an anti-Semite because you might disagree with their policies.  Or because in one instance, like in the Bannon case, an aggrieved wife in a divorce may have said something which he himself has denied having said. I think you always have to have a presumption of innocence and of good faith. And so, I am not prepared to accept those conclusions based on the evidence that I have now seen.

Bannon, Breitbart’s former executive chairman, was named by President-elect Donald Trump earlier this week as the chief strategist of the new White House administration.

Yesterday, Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) President Morton A. Klein released a statement calling the anti-Semitism claims “painful” while describing Bannon as a defender of Israel:

It is painful to see Anti-Defamation League (ADL) president Jonathan Greenblatt engaging in character assassination against President-elect Trump’s appointee Stephen Bannon and Mr. Bannon’s company, Breitbart media. ADL/Greenblatt essentially accused Mr. Bannon and his media company of “anti-Semitism” and Israel hatred, when Jonathan Greenblatt/ADL tweeted that Bannon “presided over the premier website of the ‘alt right’ – a loose-knit group of white nationalists and anti-Semites.” …

ZOA’s own experience and analysis of Breitbart articles confirms Mr. Bannon’s and Breitbart’s friendship and fair-mindedness towards Israel and the Jewish people. To accuse Mr. Bannon and Breitbart of anti-Semitism is Orwellian. In fact, Breitbart bravely fights against anti-Semitism. Here are a few of the many examples:

Stephen Bannon joined ZOA in fighting the anti-Semitic rallies at CUNY by requiring his Breitbart reporters to call CUNY officials and Gov. Cuomo aides urging them to do something about it.

Mark Levin took to his radio show on Monday to argue that the allegations of anti-Semitism against Bannon are “absolutely ridiculous.”

This reporter made similar remarks, telling BuzzFeed: “These smears are laughable to anyone who knows Bannon, a committed patriot who is deeply concerned about the growing threats to Israel. He has been particularly concerned with the dangerous trend of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel sentiment on U.S. college campuses. While at Breitbart, he pitched countless articles on these and other themes in defense of the Jewish state.”

Breitbart’s Joel Pollak stated: “I have worked with Stephen K. Bannon, President-elect Donald Trump’s new chief strategist and senior counselor, for nearly six years at Breitbart News. I can say, without hesitation, that Steve is a friend of the Jewish people and a defender of Israel, as well as being a passionate American patriot and a great leader.”

Pollak pointed to his “credentials” to comment on the matter: “I am an Orthodox Jew, and I hold a Master of Arts degree in Jewish Studies. My thesis at the Isaac and Jesse Kaplan Centre at the University of Cape Town dealt with the troubled status of Jews in an increasingly anti-Israel, and anti-Semitic, post-apartheid South Africa. I believe myself to be a qualified judge of what is, and is not, anti-Semitic.”

Pollak asserted it “defies logic that a man who was a close friend, confidant, and adviser to the late Andrew Breitbart — a proud Jew — could have any negative feelings towards Jews.”

“As I can testify from years of work together with Steve in close quarters, the opposite is the case: Steve is outraged by anti-Semitism. If anything, he is overly sensitive about it, and often takes offense on Jews’ behalf.”

One Freed Cuban Murdered An American!

The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) is strongly declaring that President Barack Obama, who has this week freed three convicted spies who spied for an enemy regime, Cuba, must free Jonathan Pollard, who spied for an American ally, Israel.

The ZOA further notes that one of the convicted spies freed by President Obama was responsible for the murder of an American citizen and that all three have served only 13 years for their crimes on behalf of an enemy state, whereas Jonathan Pollard has been imprisoned for 29 years for spying for an American ally.

ZOA National President Morton A. Klein said, “It is remarkable that President Obama, who has been repeatedly urged by U.S. officials who held responsibility at the time for national security and intelligence matters to free Jonathan Pollard, has refused to do so.”

“Conversely, he has shown himself, this week, to be willing to free three convicted men who spied for a long-term enemy state, Cuba, including one man who was responsible for death of an American national. Where is the logic and justice in that?

“Jonathan Pollard passed on classified information to Israel, a U.S. ally, not a U.S. enemy. There was, thus, no treason involved. Pollard pled guilty to the charges and apologized for his crimes. His crimes did not lead to the death of Americans, as was once claimed, but rather the espionage activities of Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen, whose actions came to light only after the Pollard sentencing, were shown to be responsible for those results.”

“Despite, having pled guilty as part of a plea bargain, Pollard was shown no leniency and was given the maximum sentence, comparable to that of Aldrich Ames, the chief of CIA counterintelligence in Eastern Europe, who passed critical defense secrets to the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and was found responsible for the deaths of at least 11 U.S. agents!”

“A host of senior past high U.S. government officials with responsibility for relevant national security, international and legal affairs, such as former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George P. Schultz, former CIA Director R. James Woolsey, former National Security Advisor Robert C. “Bud” McFarlane, former Assistant Secretary for Defense Lawrence J. Korb, former Deputy National Security Adviser Elliott Abrams, former Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman David Durenberger, former Deputy Attorney General Philip Heymann; former White House counsel Bernard Nussbaum, former Senate Judiciary Committee Member, Dennis DeConcini, and former U.S. Ambassadors to Israel Samuel Lewis and Thomas Pickering, have all publicly and in writing stated that Jonathan Pollard’s sentence has been disproportionate and urged President Obama to pardon him.”

“Jonathan Pollard has already served nearly three decades behind bars, which is by far the harshest sentence ever meted out for the offense he committed — the average term for which is a fine or two to four years’ imprisonment.”

“If President Obama can free three spies for a hostile state like Cuba, including a murderer, he can certainly pardon Jonathan Pollard. He should do so without further delay.”
