MASS SHOOTING IN CALIFORNIA SOCIAL SERVICES CENTER
At least 14 dead, police search for 3 gunmen in body armor
A mass shooting at a California social services center killed at least 14 and wounded 14 on Wednesday.
Authorities are searching for at least three gunmen in body armor and “military-style attire” near the Inland Regional Center, a San Bernardino facility serving people with developmental disabilities. SWAT teams are clearing the complex, which employs roughly 670.
Witnesses told police they saw three men with long rifles get into a black SUV and exit the parking lot. A Christmas party was going on when the attack broke out, Fox News reported.
Authorities deployed a robot to detonate a suspicious “device” found inside the building, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“It’s a very active scene. It’s very fluid,” Sgt. Vicki Cervantes, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino Police Department, told journalists.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are on the scene.
At least seven victims were taken to the nearest hospital, Loma Linda University Medical Center, spokeswoman Briana Pastorino told the Los Angeles Times.
The San Bernardino Golf Club was also placed on lockdown.
“We’re several hundred yards away from the area. We can see fire and SWAT from here but we’re not allowed to go any farther,” said Tom Brown, a golf club employee.
Reports of the shooting first came in at 2:15 p.m. EST, NBC News reported.
San Bernardino is located roughly 60 miles east of Los Angeles and has a population of roughly 210,000 people.
This is a developing story…
