North Carolina Governor Wants To Cancel Upcoming 2012 Elections

No elections in 2012? Why only one year? Why not suspend the Constitution and declare Obama President for Life?  Wouldn't that solve all our problems? No more endless campaigns, no more out of this world spending to get elected and stability in leadership--all of these would be advantages of suspending elections.  Why has no one ever thought of this before?

Governor Perdue might have hit on a great idea.  After all, President Obama has stabilized the economy after the disastrous Bush Administration, he has pulled all our troops out of the adventures in Iraq and Afghanistan, he closed Gitmo, he punished those who abused prisoners at Abu Grab, he passed Obama care which immediately reduced health care costs and he saved two great companies (GM and Chrysler), Wall Street and the banks.

In foreign relations,  countries around the world come to the President to get economic and political advice.  The Israelis and Palestinians solved their long lasting disagreements during one short meeting with him.  The UN is considering naming him Ambassador at large due to his abilities to get conflicting parties to agree.

Of course, this is a joke. We would hope that the Governor's suggestion would also be one, however, It is doubtful. A trial balloon, maybe, but a joke, hardly.

Last year,  we wrote a blog "2010--A Year of Infamy" in which we suggested a similar idea. Had that happened, the Democrats would not have lost control of the House and the legislative process.  So as outrageous you might think the idea is, when a sitting governor suggests it, we must realize that others are also considering the possibility.

Could this happen? I believe so. All it will take is an "emergency".  We passed the Patriot Act after 9/11 which cut into our civil rights. We must face virtual strip searches when we go through the airport. States have allowed their police to invade personal residences without warrants. So yes, it can happen. Will it?   I sure do hope not!  What about you?

Here is the article:

Speaking to a Cary rotary club today, N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue suggested suspending Congressional elections for two years so that Congress can focus on economic recovery and not the next election.  "I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won't hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover. I really hope that someone can agree with me on that," Perdue said. "You want people who don't worry about the next election."  The comment -- which came during a discussion of the economy -- perked more than a few ears. It's unclear whether Perdue, a Democrat, is serious -- but her tone was level and she asked others to support her on the idea.

  2. I agree, and I think most would, that this idea is too drastic a change to be taken seriously. Elections are a fundamental part of our system. Moreover, to my knowledge, states don't have the power to enforce such a policy. And the federal government wouldn't go for it. Our system has a series of checks and balances wherein change must be relatively slow. For the above reasons I feel it unlikely a policy like this would find legs, or at least I sincerely hope. Thank you for the great post!
