The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has just announced that Senator Ben Nelson from Nebraska will be its new head. This is the same Senator who carved out a Nebraska concession in Obamacare. He will now work with those Commissioners who will oversee the insurance operations of companies around the country.
If this is not allowing the fox to guard the hen house, we do not know what is. There will be many situations where insurance commissioners will be faced with decisions on Obamacare and having one of its chief proponents at the head of the Commissioners is a very bad decision. We can only expect less and less innovation by insurance companies and more expensive products as government gets more control.
As we wrote earlier, this merry-go-round of elected representatives (in this case a Senator) leaving their position and moving into prestigious and influential posts in private or semi-governmental positions, is a practice that must be stopped. It creates inbreeding and lack of creative thought.
This is a sad day for the insurance industry and by extension anyone who is a customer of an insurance company.

Ben Nelson named CEO of National Association of Insurance Commissioners

Ben Nelson, the former Democratic senator from Nebraska, has been named CEO of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the NAIC announced Tuesday.
Mr. Nelson served in the Senate from 2001 to 2013, and had previously served as Nebraska's governor and as Nebraska insurance director, as well as executive vice president of the NAIC and an insurance company executive.
He succeeds NAIC Acting CEO Andrew Beal, who assumed the role after former CEO Therese M. Vaughan resigned in November.
Mr. Beal will return to his roles as NAIC chief operating officer and chief legal counsel.
In his new role, Mr. Nelson will lead the NAIC's efforts to meet the needs of its members and represent their interests as its primary advocate and chief spokesperson in Washington. According to the NAIC, his responsibilities will include outreach to federal and international governmental entities, as well as state government associations, consumers and insurance industry representatives.
“Sen. Nelson's impressive credentials and deep knowledge of state insurance regulation are simply unmatched,” said NAIC President Jim Donelon in a statement.
“His rare and valuable combination of experience in insurance and government will be a tremendous asset to our organization,” said Mr. Donelon, who also is Louisiana insurance commissioner. “In addition to skillfully navigating the political arena, the stalwart leadership and collaborative nature that marked his time in public service will be integral to elevating our efforts on Capitol Hill.”
