PPP Survey: 'Libido' Flap Puts Huckabee Atop GOP Field

Huckabee led the nine-way race with 16 percent in the Democratic-leaning survey of 845 voters taken Jan. 23-26, while 14 percent favored former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie finished with 13 percent, while 11 percent chose Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, and 8 percent favored each of Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, Marco Rubio of Florida, and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who was the 2012 GOP vice presidential candidate.
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker finished the PPP survey with 6 percent, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal had 5 percent.
Huckabee and Bush each gained 3 to 4 points over PPP's survey results last month, while Christie and Cruz each lost 6 points.
"Mike Huckabee's comments last week didn't hurt him with the GOP base," said Dean Debnam, PPP's president. "If anything, they might have helped him in combination with Chris Christie's implosion."
At a speech before the winter meeting of the Republican National Committee in Washington, Huckabee charged the Democrats with supporting government-funded contraception and accusing the GOP of perpetuating a 'war on women.'
"Women I know are smart, educated, intelligent — capable of doing anything that anyone else can do," he told the Washington gathering. "Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women. That's not a war on them. It's a war for them."
He added: "If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government, then so be it."
The former governor said liberal bias led the mainstream media to inaccurately report his comments.
"Cruz had been leading the field among 'very conservative' voters for months — but in the wake of Huckabee's press attention last week, he's taken the top spot with that group," PPP's Debnam said.
Huckabee finished this month's survey at 20 percent among very conservative voters, compared with 15 percent for Paul, 11 percent for Cruz, and 10 percent for Bush.
The bridge-gate scandal continues to damage Christie's image with moderate voters, the latest PPP survey found. He led Bush last month, but now he's down by 3 percentage points, 28 percent to 25 percent.
