College Student Asked Connecticut Governor About UnConstitutional Gun Laws, Was Escorted Off Campus

A student at a Connecticut community college was suspended for questioning Governor Dannel Malloy about the State’s new unConstitutional gun laws last year.

Malloy was visiting Asnuntuck Community College in October when student Nicholas Saucier took the opportunity to talk to the Governor about the State’s new gun laws and how they have affected his small business.

Administration officials later charged Saucier with violations of its Policy on Student Conduct, including harassment, threats, and failure to “[d]emonstrate good citizenship by not engaging in conduct prohibited by federal, state, or other laws” and suspended him.

During a hearing about the incident, the college refused to allow the student to play his video. His suspension was eventually lifted, but the school said that Saucier will be expelled if he causes administrators any further trouble.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, nonprofit civil liberties organization, is urging the college to remove the disciplinary action from Saucier’s record.

“This case stands as a startling example of what can happen when disrespect for student First Amendment rights is combined with disregard for student due process rights,” said Peter Bonilla, Director of FIRE’s Individual Rights Defense Program. “ACC’s myriad violations of Nicholas Saucier’s rights, effective rewriting of its conduct procedures, and failure to rectify its errors should give all Americans great concern.”
