Latest Des Moines Register Poll
Shows We Have New
Presidential Candidate at Top of Polls
Real estate billionaire turned Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump leads the GOP field in Iowa before voting begins on Monday, February 1, according to the final Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politicspoll unveiled Saturday evening.
Trump finishes in the top spot with 28% of support among Republicans in the Hawkeye State, followed by Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) with 23 and 15 percent, respectively.
As the Wall Street Journal pointed out, Trump now overtakes Cruz in the Iowa polling.
Trump breaches the ±4% margin of error by just one percent, but more noticeable is Rubio surpassing retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who fell to just 10%. Here are the results, via Bloomberg:
According to the Des Moines Register, GOP strategist Stuart Stevens said Trump could very well win the Iowa caucuses, but cautioned:
“But he has little room for error. He is almost no one’s second choice.”
Far behind the double digit-polling candidates are Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) at 5%, New Jersey governor Chris Christie at 3%.
Behind them are former governors Jeb Bush and Mike Huckabee, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.), and Ohio governor John Kasich all sitting at 2 percent.
And while Trump maintains a lead in Iowa with the final results of Iowa’s top poll before voting starts, the race will certainly be close and hard-fought.
