On Thursday, CNN reported ahead of the 7 p.m. announcement on South Korea that North Korean Dictator Kim Jong Un has invited President Donald Trump to meet for talks over the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, the two will reportedly meet by May.
Before the announcement was made, CNN's White House Correspondent, Abby D. Phillip, tweeted: "North Korea leader Kim Jong Un invited US President Trump to meet in the message that was delivered by the South Korean delegation, according to a senior US official and a former US senior official."
Following the announcement, President Donald Trump tweeted: "Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!"
At the announcement, a South Korean national security advisor said: "I told President Trump that in our meeting, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he's committed to denuclearization. He pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests."
The advisor continued, stating: "[Kim] expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible. President Trump appreciated the briefing and said he would meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization."
CNN also reported that "a senior US official told CNN that North Korea offered to suspend their nuclear missile testing alongside their invitation for talks."
President Trump had tweeted at the start of the new year that his "Nuclear button" was "bigger & more powerful" than Jong Un's, which sent the media into a frenzy, but immediately led to North Korea opening lines of communication with South Korea for the first time in years.
