Gov. Cuomo: America was never that great 01:06
Washington (CNN)New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said America "was never that great" during a speech on Wednesday, drawing criticism from President Donald Trump and the Republican looking to unseat him in November.
Cuomo made the comments in the context of a larger argument about gender equality and women achieving their full potential.
"We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great," Cuomo, a Democrat, remarked at a bill signing event in New York City. The comment was met by an audible reaction from the crowd.
His comments were a response to President Donald Trump's campaign catchphrase -- "Make America Great Again."
"We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged," Cuomo added. "We will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping of women, 51% of our population, is gone, and every woman's full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution."
"Governor Cuomo disagrees with the President," said Dani Lever, press secretary for Cuomo, in a statement. "The Governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential."
She added, "When the President speaks about making America great again -- going back in time -- he ignores the pain so many endured and that we suffered from slavery, discrimination, segregation, sexism and marginalized women's contributions. The Governor believes that when everyone is fully included and everyone is contributing to their maximum potential, that is when America will achieve maximum greatness."
Late Wednesday night, Trump weighed in on Twitter: " 'WE'RE NOT GONG TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, IT WAS NEVER THAT GREAT.' Can you believe this is the Governor of the Highest Taxed State in the U.S., Andrew Cuomo, having a total meltdown!"
Cuomo faces Democrat Cynthia Nixon in a primary for the gubernatorial seat. His Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro, said earlier Wednesday that Cuomo "owes the nation an apology."
"He should be ashamed of himself," Molinaro added.

Democrat New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is believed by many to have his sights set on challenging President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, but he just got some bad news that could stand in his way.
Joseph Percoco, a confidant and former aide to the governor, was just found guilty in his federal corruption trial.

    Bribery.

Percoco, who used to be Gov. Cuomo’s executive deputy secretary, was found guilty of taking $300,000 in bribes from two companies that were engaged in state business, The New York Timesreported.
Gov. Cuomo was not accused of any crimes, but it does cast a shadow of corruption on his administration as he prepares to campaign for re-election and potentially challenge President Trump in 2020.
Gov. Cuomo said he was sad for Percoco’s daughters in a statement, but said he stood against corruption.
“The verdict demonstrated that these ideals have been violated by someone I knew for a long time. That is personally painful,” he said. “However, we must learn from what happened and put additional safeguards in place to secure the public trust. Anything less is unacceptable.”

    Brothers.

It had to be tough for the governor because of the close relationship he had with Porcoco.
At one time in their friendship the governor described him as the “third son” of his late father, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.
Gov. Cuomo’s brother is CNN anchor Chris Cuomo.
Percoco said that he was disappointed in the verdict and would talk to his attorneys about his options for appeal
“I’m thankful to my family and friends that have stood by me through this entire process,” Percoco said. “and I look forward to them all standing by me as we go forward.”

Do You Think President Donald Trump Would Defeat Gov. Cuomo In 2020?

Now Gov. Cuomo is going to have to answer questions about his relationship with Percoco as he seeks re-election as New York governor. And it would assuredly be an issue on the campaign trail if he makes an attempt to become president.
Fair or not, guilt by association is a major part of politics.
